After trying nearly every other 'do everything' option on the market, and having avoided Maschine for my entire life, I took the plunge despite the air of negative opinion around the +, and a month in I could not be happier. Ripcord and a battery, standalone problem solved. Replacing the bundled MicroSD+cheap adapter combo that comes with the device to a proper highspeed full sized SD card solved all my stability issues I saw in the first few days, speed is also improved. Latest update last week has significantly improved CPU usage, not that it was really a problem for me to begin with - Sample your plugins! Nothing has ever got me this creative and productive in years. I work in tech as well, so after 10+ hours a day at a computer, the last thing I want is more time even in the same room as a computer. The pricetag is worth that freedom alone, and being forced to do absolutely everything on the device itself, without the temptation of looking over to a computer screen, is exactly what I needed. I understand people have vastly different expectations, but having started this groovebox journey back on Korg Electribes etc, I can't help but feel those expectations as a whole have become too high. The almost miracles you can do on any modern equipment with such minor limitations is astonishing. I'm not one to beat the dead horse of 'limitations breed creativity', but option paralysis is a real thing for many people. I'd strongly recommend Maschine+ to anyone who reads this that connects with any of the sentiment.

Appreciate your feedback, I will say the way it performs these days vs when I bought it last summer is pretty different. It has improved for sure. A new SD card didn't solve every issue for me but it is smoother.

I actually just bought maschine micro since portability with my laptop is all ready there. Honestly since watching this video I realized that my MacBook Pro is far better than any stand alone maschine and since you are still having to look at screen for both the MK3 and micro you still get most of the same functionality but slightly different buttons workflow. I mean $219 micro vs mk3 $599 and $1199 for the + it’s almost a no brainer.. with the cost difference Of micro vs mk3 I purchased a 27 inch monitor . I am good to go .

You articulated my feelings about this unit perfectly. I sincerely hope that NI can get this thing worked out because they're gonna have a lot of P.O.d customers if they have to wait and accept a revised version (Maschine+ MK 2) after paying 1399 for this one. When Akai initially released the Force at 1499 there were a lot of disappointed customers with the limited feature set for the price. So what did Akai do? they cut the price by 499 and began to fix it with firmware updates and it is a beast of a unit now. NI should follow this example.

Thanks to give us a long term opinion, I think they are not at a level of runing tons of heavy vst, but is powerfull enough to use those plugins as nice instruments and resample them, so you keep using an old worflow mostly sample based. A mpc x user here, looking at the maschine plus future iterations, they have a lot of room for improvement

First and foremost I really appreciate your honesty and opinions on this video, because you have people who are either endorsed by Native Instruments or Akai or either so in love with their gear that they can't see past it to appreciate other pieces of gear. For myself I did the opposite and went from the Live 2 to Maschine Plus, and haven't absolutely zero regrets. The battery and touchscreen and speakers aren't a deal breaker for me, and I'm not the guy sitting in the park or on the beach, and when I had my Live 2 it was at my desk plugged in like my Maschine. When The One and X came out people did work arounds and had hacks they used to make it "Standalone" as far as adapters or chargers, like some are doing with the Plus. You made an excellent point about a used MacBook Pro and MK3 and you're absolutely correct, and that's the advice I gave to one of my subscribers this week, but I'm Dawless so the Plus was the choice I made. Love video, and the music bro. God bless!!🙏🏾✊🏾💚

Gutted it didn’t work out for you, as it sounds like you really liked the workflow. I’ve had mine since March or so, use it regularly, but not as a true production machine, in that I’m not producing albums on it, so my use case may not require as many resources as a project would for you. Having said that, I’ve not experienced any of the instability that others reported. Initially it crashed a couple of times, but the first update and a better SD card seemed to have fixed the problem. I do sometimes wish I could use other plugins, but the limitations work in my favour, I guess. Finding alternative ways to do some things have helped my creativity, and not having option paralysis gets me doing stuff. Hope the MPC gives you what you need! Keep making music and content. :)

I bought the Maschine mk3 a couple of days ago and I’m completely amazed by it. I was considering the plus but now, especially after watching this video I’m glad I went with the mk3 😊 Can’t stop using it. I’m currently running it on my work-laptop, Lenovo P14s. Powerhouse for sure. So I was kind of surprised when I got some cpu-spikes and crackling sound on specific instruments. I’m thinking of buying a M1 MacBook pro to use with the mk3 and it looks like this is more than enough to handle big projects with lots of effects? Maybe even the M1 MacBook Air as you mention? I’m absolutely allergic to pops and crackles when I make music, so it has to be pretty solid in that part. I’ve been away from musicmaking on computers for so long so I don’t really know if I should go with pc or mac. What do you recommend? 😊

@@DylanParisMusic Yeah, I'll have a look at this today :) One thing that worries me is that Maschine 2 and all the native instruments software only runs via Rosetta 2 on M1 macs. It's almost a year since release of M1 and NI still does not support it fully. And also there has been a lot of reports that NIs hardware has a lot of issues with Big Sur. Not sure if that is fixed.

How would describe the performance of the plus if I where to bounce EVERYTHING to audio and litterally just make the thing play back my songs with samples. No plugins at all. I’m trying to get a new live setup together bc my computer keeps crashing
@DylanParisMusic
@DylanParisMusic 2 жыл бұрын
I would not recommend the plus for that as it only has 4 gigs of ram and still randomly crashes and crackles in my experience. You likely want an Octatrack or an Akai Force for that task as they both have disk streaming
@Dilettanteworks
@Dilettanteworks 2 жыл бұрын
I think the biggest mistake they made was in the price point. If it had been $300-$500 cheaper, and then lead to a more modest price cut for the Mk3, I think it would be fine for what it is. I personally haven't hit many performance issues, aside from using Kontakt ensembles, which I run into whether I'm using Kontakt on a Desktop PC, Laptop PC, or M+. I also have never really used all 8 groups, or all 16 pads of any group, for a track, even on my PC. I tend to split things up as Drums, Bass, Chords, Lead, (non-percussive) Samples, with only the drum and Samples groups having more than 8 sound slots taken up. I've been able to leave the M+ running for a couple hours without any issues, as well, though I have had the occasional reboot here and there sometimes when starting the unit or loading a project. However, the projects that tend to give me trouble, as previously stated, all utilize at least one kontakt ensemble. Kontakt tends to give me trouble, regardless of the platform I host it on. For example: Drumlab hasn't worked for me since I got a Maschine Mikro in 2016. I'm sorry this didn't work out for you, and I hope NI take all of this feedback seriously enough to do this piece of gear justice. I've been in love with the workflow since I've had my mikro and want NI to make better business decisions instead of shoving sounds.com stuff down our throats and up their bums.

After seeing this I’m definitely not getting maschine plus even though I’m very familiar with maschine mk3 which has also been my favorite music production tool to date. It would be awesome if you made a video explaining your transition to learning mpc coming from maschine. Also if I were you I’d sell that maschine plus ASAP, native instruments is known for cash grabs, their company is going through a bunch of turmoil, and I’d personally be more upset watching the price go down as the device gets older knowing that it’s just been collecting dust - just my 2 cents though! Good intuition on the deluge. I bought one the same day I saw it for the first time because a hardware piano roll made so much sense to me. It was THE device I had been looking for...back in 2016 I remember walking into a guitar center and asking if they had a hardware device that was oriented like a piano roll and every person I got handed off to looked at me like I was crazy. So when I saw the deluge i was super excited, but in practice, it is dizzying. And trying to sequence more than a bar is a real pain. They could solve this by allowing scrolling one step at a time, but the current page at a time(16 steps) horizontal scrolling is frustrating, you lose the ability to see the previous steps so your just staring at a blank grid again with very little visual cues to orient you. But it does have a battery and even a little dinkyspeaker, that comes in handy way more one would probably expect. So it probably still beats the Maschine+ in the "I wanna reach for it" test.

I think the plus is really more about where you think it is going than what it is. I bought it based on that assumption. I haven’t had any crash issues whatsoever but know others have. I definitely was disappointed about no internal power source. It was something that I realized I really wanted post purchase and it’s a small nuisance to have to get a battery pack for it if I want true portability. Other than that I’m very happy. For the record, I came from mpc so I’ve seen both sides of the coin there and the workflow/sounds of machine take the cake for me.

And it was crashing all the time, then I discovered that if you change the SD card and replace it with a 256 GB SDHC II extreme SD from Scan disk,...90% of the crashes disappeared. Swapping the SD card out definitely improved load times for sounds and songs. It didn't immediately resolve my stability issues with crashes and crackling at 50 percent CPU usage, but I have seen those issues get better with some firmware updates. Thank you this is super helpful. I've been on Maschine since rev.1 a bazillion years ago, and always used super powerful PCs; so I never have issues (on MKIII for a long time now), BUT I'm considering a 100% DAWless setup (along with my modular rig) and just couldn't do without my Maschine. So after a year or so, I thought they'd have the bugs worked out. But if it's buggy and crashy that's a complete fail from NI. Being an expert in Maschine, I cringe that I may have to learn MPC's workflow but if it's stable and works when you need it, then I need to check it out. I am somewhat tempted to snag Mas+ used (no more than $1K) and give it a go with my workflow and plug-in loading. Maybe I'll report back!

Honestly this is great to hear. It also on the other hand forced me to go dig deep into the plus. What I’ve found personally is that it gets pretty insane. I’ve actually used a Interface and recorded vocal’s and it was amazing with no computer and dare I say the effects that you can add to your voice other than auto tune is soo next level. Clip’s allows you to do amazing transitions. I almost forgot you the automation🔥🔥🔥. Mpc’s are insane too, Going back to Mpc 2000 or the 4000. You definitely had to plug them out and I up. You definitely didn’t have a speaker. You didn’t have a ton of sample time. They cost way more and the producer’s and songs that came from that legendary! No matter what have fun. Get to know your gear. They all have strengths and weakness but truly that’s up to you how strong or weak they are

I was so close to pulling the trigger on one of these. £899 plus 8 extra sound packs for free meant it was good value. Then I watched your videos and realised I'd be buying a bit of a turkey. The great price probably means NI is thinking of replacing it soon! I've been burnt that way before. I also hadn't realised stability was such an issue. So, wallet put away. I'll wait and see if a MkII addresses this. Thanks for an insightful video.

I agree with several of your points. The product wanted to be, but is not, a "DAW in a box". I think, the most wonderful part about what the machine plus is, is what it can be in the future. The evolution of technology and the fact that within 5 to 10 years a musician could truly have everything they need to create in one piece of hardware. You're not wrong, it was a very expensive toy. But if you're not trying to get on the top 10 songs and just want to make musical scenes it's pretty darn neat

maschine+ was never intended to be a daw in a box. its a sampler with groovebox-features and with amazing resampling features. its not supposed to run 10 vsts at the same time plus fx-plugins, etc. - also I never had any of theses problems. make sure you use a professional fast sd-card - will solve all the hickups while loading a project while another projects plays. also a new big stability update is coming this week.

Yo. I recommend grouping your effects in the routing. For instance, I put effects on the sounds of an empty group and route my sounds to them. The Maschine is actually designed for that but for some reason no one talks about it. I think it’s because so many groove box users don’t have more traditional recording backgrounds which is completely understandable. It will save a ton on CPU. I promise.

Dylan , great review , and the problem might be even not Maschine + only , i had feedbacks from students that they had crackles on projects ect ...i decided to give it a go : i usually never use maschine standalone , always part of a template in a DAW , i updated to last version and did several track on standalone , adn i can't tell you that , even if comp cpu is chilling , you get trouble : audio engine seems terrible more and more , and the fact that those so called sound designer (sound exepnsions) use 14 FX on master and stack anything on each track doesn't help !!! My Advise for Maschine users (standalone) : clean the groups (take off every FX unecessary ) , reset unused track (pad) , use if you have one a better sound card tghan NI (RME here , asio drivers are way more otpimised and solid) . Maschine is still superior from anything around but once you get a great workflow and a good working version , stick with it !! Maschine + : still non mature ..... and i'm afraid all the mess we see on maschine software side is due to the fact that they're having the + on the focus ...

Good video - although i think its an advantage that Maschine+ does not have a built in battery. This means that you can use a battery bank that suits your needs or budget - or even bring several of them if you are going on a longer camping trip. Also, once its time to get a new battery, you dont have to open up the case to change it out. Of course, they could have added the option to use AA batteries - or ideally 18650 batteries or bigger - but then the unit would have to be bigger, which is maybe not ideal for all people... Also, im not sure how much power this thing uses, so maybe AA/18650 batteries are not a valid option... The Electribe2 uses 6x AA batteries, and only lasts 4-5 hours if i remember correctly. Ive got both the E2 and E2S, and charging all 12 batteries is a PITA..! All things considered though, i think the Maschine+ is a waste of money, considering you can get the MK3 for half the price, and have a lot more functionality if you just add a laptop and a battery bank. From what i have heard, you cant change the waveforms in NI Massive with just the controller - and i would be surprised if you can use the controller for making your own patches in Reaktor. Stuff like this makes the Maschine+ seem useless for standalone - but of course others may be totally happy with the features it provide on its own...

@@omarwhite3627 It's just a personal thing. I'm very comfortable with the ableton workflow. I come up with melodies, I come up with drum parts, bass parts. I mix and match each individually until I like it and then arrange everything. With MPC, you make everything in sequences, which are like big buckets. You put all the parts of a sequence, like melody and drums and samples, and then you just play the sequences in the order you like. If you want to change a drum part in a sequence for a new part of the song, you need a whole new sequence with all the other parts in it but with the different drums. It's annoying. All those Maschine + trailers reminded me of those soda commercials where people are dancing and jumping up and down in celebration because for some reason, soda has changed their lives forever. What a disappointment because this would have really been a centerpiece for myself. It had the right mix of effects, synths, drum machines, workflow, connectivity, and form-factor. And they throw an Intel Atom CPU in there?! That's like equipping a freight train with a Honda Civic engine. What the heck were they thinking? I would have gladly paid a bit more if they would have put a more capable processor in, but at $1400.00, that should have been in there in the first place. I was considering, as a runner up, the Akia Force, but the synths are not very inspiring and there is not much deep editing either. Lot of good points on poor stability and desktop-aimed plugins and expansions on a less powerful piece of hardware. But, comparing it to a competing piece of hardware doesn’t make sense to me, as there are to many differences, too. Espescialy when comparing workflows. Yes, I’m disappointed about the stability, too. Also on Native Instruments and the speed of making things right for there customers, that could and should be a bit better. Until then, I’m using the M+ as a sketchbook-like standalone DAW. Less powerful then my Macbook Pro, but pretty cool for beat making, sampling, mashing up loops, etc. and exporting that to the desktop, where I’m using Ableton Live is my primary DAW with all this NI stuff as plugins. I also use the M+ next to my Kontrol S4 MK3 and in sync with Traktor Pro for mixing in loops, 1-shots and effects. Again, I think some of your arguments do make a lot of sense. So thanks for taking your time and pointing those out, because a lot of the so-called reviewers don’t bring them to the table. But, I also think some of your research could have be done at forehand. So think-do-think instead of do-think-do… the latter is a recipe for emotional buying and become disappointed (and/or biased) later. Kind regards, Maik

I was going to get a maschine + instead of an Akai Force. So glad I didn't and went with the force. However, even with the latest 3.1.1 Force update, there still remains stability issues. So you have to save ALOT. I use my Maschine MK3 alot with the Mac one mini m1. It's like a breath of fresh air as you stated with your m1 laptop. Give it a couple of years, Standalone units will be alot more redefined...hopefully! Great review Dylan. Keep up the great work.

I wonder if the best way for NI wouldn’t have been first porting everything on iPadOS/Android and create an mk4 and mikro mk4 with a built-in tablet stand on the top and sdcard slot to add content (now iOS supports that). Then once they got all the code base on ARM they could think about making a standalone unit again. I still have my M+ though and loving it, unable to decide to sell it because of the quality of the sounds I can produce with it and as you mentioned probably the best workflow out there.

For the Price of a Used Machine+ in Poland I can buy a Brand New MPC One and a Used Mk3 to Control my Main PC and have the software (NI Massive is like half of the price of a used MK3) . MPC Oes are impossible to find used, they get sold quickly for not much less than a brand new. And one shop sells the Brand new MPC One with an AKAI MPK Mini Mk3 Black Which I can sell and get a an A25 keyboard with Lol. I was considering the Mashine+ as I couldn't decide between used Mk3 and MPC One and a used Plus seemed to be the best Solution as I want to be Away from my computer and buying a laptop for mk3 does not make sense for me. The Machine has also this PRO that many people overlook, You have 1 device and 1 Workflow for both Standalone and PC. MPC One is great as a standalone groove box but does it work the same with the PC? The workflow of Maschine and the sounds is way better but it is not standalone. You can get both devices for the Price of new Maschine+ but then the downside is you need to know 2 workflows. It is a tough choice... But then You can Get Both MPC One for your music and Mk3 for the PC brand new, or get used you could afford the Komplete 13 Library or a quality midi Keyboard:)

stability issue ? wow, that's the first time I hear about it. I believe you when you say it's been proven but... I used the M+ intensively (it's the brain of my dawless home studio). I had issues when I bought it. NI told me to reformat the card and perform a factory reset and then no problem whatsoever. none. never again. Best gear I ever bought in 25 years. I'm sorry it doesn't works for you. I'm in love with it and the reason I have been able to switch to dawless (that, and a multitrack recorder)

all problem you describe were known problem related to crappy batch of SDCard. A known issue, I think it even was a forum sticky at some point and they would offer to send you a new sdcard free of charge.

i rarely get over 20% cpu load too. (but I use A LOT of external instrument, the M+ is mostly there to control them (including a eurorack modular setup). Perhaps that I explain why I never had stability issue ?

6:26 DUDE ! WTF ?! That was uncalled for ! you can't be serious. It doesn't works for you and it hurts to spend so much money for something that doesn't works for you (trust me, I know, I bought an octatrack and now I have a subsubsubsubsubmenu PTSD (luckily I managed to resell it for a fair price)).
