Built in 1888, the Maschinenfabrik Swiderski in Plagwitz, Leipzig - specialised in the production of Steam and Petroleum engines. After the Death of the owner Philipp Swiderski in 1906, the factory was sold off in 1916 and again in 1921. The new owner - Georg Spieß - would retool the factory to produce Printing presses. The Maschinenfabrik Spieß was heavily damaged during the second world war, but was rebuilt in 1945.
The factory was "nationalised" by the East German state and renamed to VEB Bogenanlegerwerk and then again renamed in 1960 to VEB Druckmaschinenwerk Leipzig - all while continuing to produce printing presses and equipment.
The factory was sold off to a private investor after german reunification in the early 1990s who intended to build housing units on the land. Due to building restrictions, the plot has remained undeveloped for over 30 years with the building falling more and more into disrepair. The property owner refuses to repair or secure the building, which has prompted to the city to consider buying back the land and turning the buildings into a school or community center. As of 2024, no progress has been made.
