In love with the fact the Puppets just follow the Jim Henson explanation that "no one ever questions why there's a talking frog and bear walking around" (paraphrased). They just ARE alive and have always been puppets. It's a refreshing twist on the monsters being once-human or given life via rituals.
@HankJWimbleton-v1m

It also flips the evil corporation trope, because the company that made the puppets and their shows genuinely wanted to spread joy with no ulterior motives instead of being run by a bunch of mad scientists and/or serial killers trying to implant the souls of dead children into the mascots. You keep looking for that "Aha, obviously evil!" piece of lore but never find it, instead having the CEO's farewell letter be about always looking for goodness in everyone. Aside from years of abandonment and isolation following the cancellation of their show, the reason why puppets were aggressive in the first place was also because of their exposure to the worst of humanity through television. They aren't outright malicious or evil, they are more like children who don't know how to properly take care of themselves.
@Iwuznothere
@Iwuznothere Жыл бұрын
It may not be the best survival horror ever, but its incredible that it never seems to mock or hate the things that inspire it unlike most mascot horror. It still views the fictional childhood property as something that is ultimately just trying to do good and can be redeemed. Its a breath of fresh air in a crowded pool of tainted childhood properties.

There isn’t necessarily anything wrong with releasing a game in chunks, it can be very useful for getting feedback or if you don’t have the time to do a full release in once, but much like most things it just depends on how the said developers use that time to improve their craft.

It's hilarious how more effective the jumpscares in this game are compared to most indie horror nowadays. Instead of a gory monster popping out of a hole it's "HI THERE FRIEND, LEMME GET YOU SOME MILK AND COOKIES! HAVE A GOOD TIME WHILE YOU'RE HERE!!" It's also not everyday you get a mascot horror that gives a pretty good message. Not joking when i say i teared up at the ending. It's a very good moral and is really fitting for a game about sesame street puppets just wanting to teach kids.

I love this game because the puppets aren’t possessed by children or by the workers and they aren’t brought to life by vengeful magic done by the show runner in anger of his show being cancelled. One thing that I love about this compared to other survival/mascot horrors is that the voices in this are so genuinely enjoyable. Not to say other games don’t have enjoyable voices, but they do usually have that repetitive style of it usually being a casual and low tone voice. This main character has a thick accent and a very unique personality compared to the other protags who are all about “im going to save the world, im the hero!” Whilst Gordon is just like “I straight up can’t be bothered with anything currently going on.” But not in a full and miserable tone of course. The enemy voices aren’t just the generic “we are evil so we have corrupted voices/gargled sounds” but rather they still keep their cartoony and giddy voices that fair for moments of surprise due to their outbursting nature and energetic openings. The comedy is on point too, they have incredible timing in terms of dialogue and timing and general events

Watching this through from start to finish and seeing Gordon interact with the major puppets was genuinely nice. It felt like he was dealing with his own grief from being in the war and coming home to the backlash by teaching the puppets life lessons. I picked up on that being a possibility when he sat down with gobblette and talked about how he feels, and then again with pearl. By healing them, he was healing himself in a way. I like that.

MFN captured what a lot of mascot horrors tend to fail at; the mascots should be actually appealing to children (or at least once were before falling into neglect.) These guys look and sound like real muppets, so internal world logic and verisimilitude connect well. These were probably beloved characters, and these sets look like they could have been actually used, so the world around you feels more "real." Some of the FNAF locations nail that, but others less so. Other games like Garten and Poppy Playtime lean into scariness or lack elegant design so much that it's hard to imagine the characters actually being lovable in their own world. MFN really nailed their intended vibe and it makes the game a wonderful experience.
@blackheartzerotheundergrou3225
@blackheartzerotheundergrou3225 Жыл бұрын
Granted, MFN does have traditional "Indie Horror twisted-scary" versions of their mascots, but they are a very small minority that show up in just like one-two percent of the entire playable world. They just pop up around the finale, and once they're dealt with, they're never seen again. They're not the focus of the game, and they do not overstay their welcome.

This. A lot of ppl hate the FNAF designs from pizza sim/SB/UCN cuz “they’re not scary”. But what FNAF 1 (and kind of 2) got right was that the characters looked like they could actually be mascots. Then 3, 4, and sister location went heavy on the horror, even when unnecessary. I liked the cuter designs cuz it makes way more sense in universe. Poppy Playtime almost had it. Huggy Wuggy I could imagine would be seen as cute, but they’re always focusing on the scary Huggy (like how the plushies all had teeth), when they could produce merch that feels like it should be from that universe. It’s literally a toy company, how are they not taking advantage of that premise in their actual merch?

This game wasn't afraid to wear its inspirations on its sleeve, while at the same time fighting hard for an aesthetic and tone unique to the survival horror genre. A few quirks and nitpicks aside, this game nailed its concept and I wouldn't be surprised if we end up seeing other gateway resident evils pop up in the next few years. p.s. This is what Security Breach should have been.

My Friendly Neighborhood feels like a stepping stone for the mascot horror demographic to go into proper survival horror, especially as they become older. Think of it as the family-friendly version of Resident Evil or Bioshock. Aside from all of that, this is essentially what the original Bendy and Ink Machine should have been in the first place (unsurprising given how that game also drew inspiration from the Bioshock games).

I feel like it can’t be the best just by virtue of it being a twist on the already established genre. The type of horror is different than most survival horror, and it’s got a very good sense of humor. Something that some survival horror games lack. The best imo would have to be a game that exemplifies the traditional concept that pretty much defined the genre.

I think its also more clever to do puppets if u can't afford to make the best human/animal models. Like toy story but survival horror.

are we gonna discuss how genuinely good this game was? Hello Neighbor can only fucking dream of coming anywhere CLOSE to this game. Besides the major softlock with the green key (which has probably been fixed by now) this game is DEFINETLY worth the money. I might consider buying it at some point.

Somehow, the event of the game are kind of acurated, in the sense that we live in a world that is more and more depressing and it's hard to look at the bright side...

Second comment - I'm revisiting this stream and wanted to give my two cents on why the game doesn't have a soundtrack throughout. There are two different kinds of sound - diegetic and non-diegetic. Non-diegetic sound would be the music that plays *outside of* the awareness of the characters inside the media you are consuming (in this case, a game, but typically it's referring to a film). Diegetic sound is the sound that is in-media, that characters can hear. For example, the babbling puppets. I was thinking about how you had noticed the absence of music, and I remembered this concept. From what I can tell, the devs were only focusing on *diegetic* sound when creating the player experience. The way I know this is: when you entered the lobby, music started playing. In super nice places, they play music in the lobby, so that makes sense for why music is there and not elsewhere. It adds a bit of realism to this frankly whackadoodle experience.

Now that I've finished this eight-hour marathon, here's some scattered thoughts on the themes of the game and what it's ultimately about. *Spoilers,* obviously - and take note before clicking 'read more', it's a long one. The core message of MFN is about finding faith, and the importance of a good role model. Although I think there's a good case to be made for the game's messaging being implicitly Christian, it doesn't necessarily need to be to get its point across; more broadly, it's about rediscovering faith in old ideals and virtues that the difficulties of adult life can strip away from us, and holding firm to those ideals as an example to those who might look to us for guidance. The puppets, main characters and background puppets alike, are metaphorical children: they're possessed of budding intelligence and great curiosity, eager to make friends and do good by one another, but they're deeply impressionable. Without the good moral guidance that the show offered them while it was on air, they're left to take on negative influences from the difficult world around them, or struggle to come up with answers on their own, leaving them lost and confused as to how they should behave. They might *want* to be good, but with nobody left around them to show them *how* to be good, they've got little hope. Gordon is the quintessential 'grown-up', representing everybody who has had that essential goodness inside them diluted by harsh reality. The trauma he experienced caused him to lose faith; having seen for himself how cruel people can be to one another, it's hard for him to see the value in the show's 'childish' lessons. The wider world is much more complex than the Friendly Neighbourhood, and Gordon sits firmly as a resident of that wider, worse world. However, this places Gordon in a position of great wisdom compared to MFN's residents: their world, by comparison to his, is small, simple, and free of consequence. Ultimately, this places Gordon in a position where he has both much to offer to and much to learn from MFN. The puppets need the mature, knowledgeable hand of someone who knows more of the world than they do, while Gordon needs to rediscover those basic lessons of virtue that the show, in its time, wanted to impress on children around the city, in turn unearthing the goodness in him that his trauma had buried. Gordon is at once a mentor and a pupil, teaching the puppets how to solve problems and understand themselves while they teach him the value of caring for and having patience with others. The game effectively makes him a father to the puppets, which they've lacked since the show stopped broadcasting, and shows how even small gestures and snippets of wisdom from him can impact the puppets greatly. In short, My Friendly Neighbourhood is about how kids need good parents, how parents can learn from their kids, and - if you'll forgive me for jumping into that Christian angle I mentioned at the last possible moment - how humanity needs a good father. We're all just ragdolls flailing around trying to do the right thing, really.

Glad that somebody finally did puppets with legs. Like there’s nothing wrong with releasing the 4,398 hand puppet mascot horror but considerably more real life puppets have legs. That’s the problem with modern horror. Easy formula, (Place) of (person) Or (Noun)phobia Or even (Person’s) (place)

People who find all the puppets voices annoying have never had siblings that just talk over each other because that's what these puppets remind me of. Edit: Okay, finally finished the stream, just gonna spill my thoughts and like only criticism of the game (And trust me i feel as though its just me but yk-) I really enjoyed this game! Its a much needed departure to the oversaturation of mascot horror and it actually feels like its something enjoyable for me to play while my little brother watched. (The last time i did that was when i bought Security breach for myself. Lets just say being your little brother's personal lets player REALLY sucks the fun out of it.) Ray's my favourite puppet if you're curious, and Gordon is an absolute treat I love him. As for my critique, which may i add the positives all outweigh, some of the wholesome bits did feel rather...Christian Preachy? Don't get me wrong! the message was there, and if it is like that then that's fine, nothing wrong with that, it's just to me when Ricky was talking about how people 'preferred the darkness to the light' my brain went and translated that to 'people preferer sin to God'. Obviously now that im thinking about it now Ricky could be on about people's fixation on the war and, well, general trashy TV as the 'darkness' and more younger kids going towards said darkness. I know this game has been compared to resident evil but in terms of story? I'd have to say it does also have some vibes to Night At the Museum as well. (A trio of banger movies may i add i highly recommend them) Gordon reminds me of a more sorta grumpier version of the mc in Natm. In Conclusion, A baller game and a really fun stream as well. Praying it ever comes to switch because i feel like my mom would like this game since she grew up on the og resident evil games, the mechanics might feel quite familiar and nostalgic to her.
