One that really made me go LOL was the one where Duke is at a college and about to devulge the secret recipe to the class and Jay is outside at the window yelling "DUUUUUKE!" Duke: "Uh oh! Class dismissed! Even funnier, Duke dressed as a ghost and pretending to be Jay's grandfather. Jay isn't fooled because "Grandpa didn't have a tail". Interesting trivia. Duke was played by several dogs and the real, original Duke died long before the first ads were made. These dogs are playing the role of Jay's old pet. This, when news broke that Duke died, it was rather one of the dogs that played him. Weird huh?

There used to be in the 1970’s and 80’s, a US brand called Big John’s bbq baked beans. There were 2 cans connected together, the smaller can had a tomato-based Smokey BBQ sauce that you added to the main can of beans. They were the best, hands-down I’ve ever had. I was raised in the panhandle of western Nebraska. From that area come 65 percent of the pinto and northern white beans in the entire world. The “whites” are the bean of choice for all baked beans. Although Van Camps was the favorite canned beans when I was growing up, the majority of baked beans were the product of family recipes and a plentiful supply of beans - many times right from the field. Most of these baked beans were simply delicious, but recipes were rarely shared. Remembering when always makes the taste better, and strangely enough it will never be duplicated.

I lived in South Portland Maine when I was a young kid. If the wind was right you could smell the B & M plant, yum (if the wind was wrong you got the SD Warren paper mill in Westbrook, yuk). Extra bonus if they were making brown bread that day. B & M beans and Jordan's hot dogs were a Saturday night staple. Sometimes my grandmother would get fancy and throw them in a bean pot with a small pork roast. After cooking in the beans for a few hours the roast was basically baked bean infused pulled pork. My only complaint about B & M beans is they stopped putting in the queen bean. The square white gelatinous bean is the queen bean, the rest are just worker beans.

My overall #1 favorite is; BUSH'S ONION BAKED BEANS!!! I always dip out some of the juice first. Then... I add brown sugar and some honey to them, prior to cooking them down for a little, to thicken them up.
@davidbostock69332 жыл бұрын
FWIW - The only difference between brown sugar and white is molasses. As flavoring very small amount of molasses is good, the stuff is rich in minerals/vitamins. Adding starch is a common way to thicken stuff. Cooking them to thicken is probably a better way to do it. I avoid using sugar when I can, I sweeten with 100% stevia powder extract which will have bad flavor if too much is used. Stevia spoon is about 1/32 teaspoon for teaspoon equivalent, but still needs to be reduced for 1/2 gallon drink quantities. Table sugar and similar including honey has two problems. Excess calories in a diet with too many calories. Sucrose (table & similar sugars) is a molecule of glucose bound to a molecule of fructose. Fructose is safe in fruits & vegetables since it is bound to other things its release is slow. The Fructose in a teaspoon of table sugar (a 1/2 teaspoon of fructose) has been observed to cause gaps between cells that form blood vessel linings and it's thought such gaps form sites for bad cholesterol to stick. SEARCH: fructose endothelium (endothelium is lining of blood vessels).

Busch’s Country Style or Maple and they’re black beans grillin beans are my favorites. They quit manufacturing Big John’s several yrs ago,way before the pandemic. Big John’s if anyone remembers them from the 70s had a white band wrapped around it and the beans were separate from the sauce and, that was the reason for the white band, the sauce came in a different can, all you have to do is add the onion and raw bacon on top before you bake them in the oven, that sauce was really good. As a kid growing up my grandma and my mom would just also buy, just regular cans of pork and beans and, then, doctor them up. They made there own barbecue sauce, and pour them over the beans and, plenty of chopped onion and raw bacon over top and bake. They didn’t cook this barbecue sauce on top of the stop before they put them in because, the sauce would get heated through with the beans. My grandma and mom would put this homemade barbecue sauce in their meatloaf and, on top of it as well. I knew how to make this sauce at a very young age just by watching and helping them out in the kitchen. Today, I can still make this sauce blind folded. Back then, in the 70s they were called mostly pork n’beans and, there would be white square that sat in the beans, sometimes there was 2 of them in the can, it was like pork fat that looked like pats of butter. The goal was to get that square piece of pork fat out before the beans got in the oven. But, if you didn’t you sat at the supper table digging into the dish of baked beans to dig out that fat, then, to again keep spooning till you got the other, that was the only thing good about pork n’ beans.

Thank you for including English style baked beans! They are noticeably different from the lack of brown sugar that gives it a mild sweetness that is almost savory. They are perfect with breakfast foods. The British eat their beans way more often than we Americans do, especially as part of a traditional full breakfast.

I'm sorry, but speaking as a Brit, I think all canned baked beans in the USA are too sweet. Indeed, I think that most American processed food is too sweet, but then I was in a supermarket in Florida, where a lot of Europeans go for a bit of winter sun, a couple of years ago and they'd had what I thought of as a good idea in having sections of foods from different European countries like Italy (pasta, pesto, etc) France (cheese, bakery), Germany (cooked meats) and the UK, no doubt so that people could get the sort of grub they had in their own countries. The thing is that the UK section had the most appalling over-processed junk in it: HP sauce, Bisto gravy granules, Branston pickle, Angel Delight (A particularly disgusting milk pudding) etc. It all looked straight out of a museum of British life in the 1960s. The only thing it didn't have was Marmite, which is what it really needed. I recoiled in horror at the sight of this junk food, asking myself 'Is this the stuff the Yanks think we eat?'... and immediately realised that this was a shop, not a museum and it was all there to be sold. This was the junk we Brits really do eat... and it made me despair for my fellow countrymen.

Heinz baked beans are NOT the same in the US as they are in the UK. Most noticeable is the difference in the level of sugar, with the UK being much less sweet than the US version.

Keep in mind that there is nothing stopping anyone from adding their own touches to any canned product and this includes beans . Take Campbells pork and beans for an example... Just add a bit of sweet relish and few dashes of hot sauce and it becomes quite favorable. BTW, for canned soups, I always add some dried parsley and a bit of butter substitute etc to them., and maybe a couple twists from my black pepper mill. Bottom line you, are always free to make most canned foods your own by adding your own flavor touches .

I'm not a vegetarian, but my go to when it comes to beans is the number one choice, Bush's Vegetarian. I really hate the chunks of fatty/gristley pork or bacon that comes in most canned beans. I like pork in mine but you make an excellent point. They spend all this time and money developing this incredible sauce and so many of these companies treat the pork as an afterthought and just throw in whatever chunks they can find. I use the recipe that my mom used for years. She would fry up some bacon in a skillet with some chopped onion which cooked in the Bacon fat as it rendered. She would stop before the bacon was crisp. She drained the fat from the onions mix those in to a couple of large cans of beans. I use about three cans of the vegetarian bushes beans. Put that in a casserole dish lay the bacon strips along the top throw it in the oven under the broiler to finish the bacon and heat. The onion carries just enough Bacon fat in two flavor the entire dish and crispy strips of bacon on top are amazing

Thanks for your reviews of the various brands and types of caned baked beans. I was a little surprised that you did not rate B&M brand higher. I grew up on Hines or Cambelles brand that my mother would add her own extra to flavor them better than right out of the can. As an adult I tried various different brands but found B&M especially the traditional Boston style to be the best. I liked them so much I even occasionally eat some right out of the can. While Your top pick Bushes are also good to me B&M is just as good and usually priced lower than Bushes.

My favorite beans are not baked but cooked. I know because I cook them myself. I don't worry about too much salt or sugar, because I add them to my taste. It is very to cook beans on top of the stove, but it takes forethought. Pinto beans must be softened in the refrigerator overnight. The benefits of home-cooked beans are you choose the ingredients to your taste. You don't add preservatives - unless you want them. The cost of preparation is minimal, a great savings compared with canned beans from the store. I make two pounds at one time in a three quart pot. The only attention required is not overly to simmer.

Any baked beans are good if you doctor them up to taste. Simply dump the juice not the beans into a pot with brown sugar, mustard, BBQ sauce and worchestershire sauce and simmer then add the beans until warm. About that, I had a long conversation with a hillbilly biker friend of mine about heating beans, he insisted you have to eat them cold out of the can or their no good. I live by, to each his own, I like what I like, don't like it go eat somewhere else - more for me.

Not Barbecue sauce, ketchup because, your basically making a sweet base of barbecue sauce, and, then, you mix it in your beans along with chopped onion and, add raw bacon on top and, bake them in the oven. You also add a little honey in the sauce. My grandma and mom made them this way for yrs and, that’s what I do and, we also put this same homemade barbecue sauce in our meatloaf and, put the same sauce overtop when, it’s time.
