Yes, hot dogs are definitely cooked. I know because I operated the smokehouse for Cudahy Foods in Atlanta, GA back in the '70's. The cooking process for our average-sized hot dogs was for an hour and fifty minutes. The first 20 minutes of the process, the dogs were cooked at 120 degrees. Then, they were automized with liquid smoke at room temperature for 20 minutes. After the dogs were darkened and flavored with the smoke, they cooked for 20 minutes at 140 degrees. The next 20 minutes, they were cooked at 160 degrees. And the next 20 minutes, they cooked at 180 degrees. At that point, they were checked with thermometers by Moi and a government inspector to see if they had reached 160 degrees on the inside of the hot dog. If so, they were rinsed for 10 minutes, weighed, combined on three tree racks, and stored in the blast freezer. Hot dogs bin vedy vedy good to me. 🙂

I still eat hot dogs cut up and fried with eggs, got it from my Dad also. Tear up pieces of bread and toast in a skillet, fry hot dogs pieces in same skillet with the bread, butter, pour in beaten eggs and make just like you would soft scrambled eggs, add a little cheese if you like and throw it under a broiler for a couple minutes. It's basically a hot dog frittata. A simple version is to just add eggs to the fried hot dog pieces in a small skillet and flip for over med eggs, makes a good sandwich on toast.

Just as we got to the top of the stairs and turned right to catch the trains we would line up at the carry out window of the bar for a hot dog and a can of beer. When it comes to processed meats like hot dogs, "best" becomes very arbitrary and subjective, depending on your criteria and your own personal taste. I've had cheap hot dogs made from chicken and pork for so long that when I get an "all-beef" hot dog, it doesn't taste right to me. Hot dogs also depend on the condiments and toppings you put on them. A chili cheese dog is going to taste different from a Chicago dog, no matter which hot dog brand you use. As I've gotten older, I've found that I prefer a sausage over a hot dog, with mayo, sweet relish and tomato.

The Sabrett in the casing is the classic "Dirty Water Dog" of NYC. Has a good snap and firm texture even after sitting in the steamer awhile, and I think they use more garlic in the seasoning that gives them that distinctive taste.

Sabrett's is definitely the best! Anyway you want to cook 'em. Boiled/steamed, grilled, split and fried in a pan, or even deep fat fried. I am so enthralled by hot dogs and have been so for the last 30 years. I was a Nypd cop who would always have a foot post on st marks place in the village in nyc as punishment for one thing or another. I didn’t mind wandering around my post in the village. Lots of weirdos and something always going on to make the night interesting. There was a business called “Greys papaya” they would sell 2 dogs grilled and a whipped papaya drink(other flavors too) for 2.50 at the time. They were open 24 hours and always had a line out the door. I studied this business for years and on many occasions would see them get their deliveries of sabrett’s hot dogs by the case load from a refrigerated struck. Hand truck load after load would go into the store and into a walk-in box downstairs. My entrepreneurial self was always thinking of setting a business up following their model but naturally under a different name somewhere else - in the right place. I was always discouraged by my wife and kids that are health conscious. They would say that hot dogs are a food of the past and people don’t want that anymore. BUT THEY ARE WRONG !!! I am pushing 60 and still thinking about this business with Sabrett’s hot dogs. I will do this before I die. Your video just reinforced and added validity to my ambitious dream. Unfortunately the prices have skyrocket on the hot dogs and virtually everything else , so that is a bummer. Thanks again for the video.

Sadly, here in the west, I have never seen Sahlen's, Sabrette's or Boar's head at any supermarket. I like Hebrew national, but find them too salty. In fact, I find pretty much all hot dogs too salty. Nathan's, Oscar Meyer both seem okay to me (I expected more from Nathan's when I first saw them) and Ball park seem like generic hot dogs, not too exciting. We have "Dodger dogs" which are longer, but still pretty meh. To reduce the salt, I often boil them, but if I'm in the mood to grill them, I may soak them a couple hours first, to leach out some of the salt. I know hot dogs should have lots of flavor and should be simple, so this annoys me a bit. My favorite would probably be the ones with the least salt.

I have no idea why this came up on my KZbin list but I can tell you, growing up in Buffalo means I grew up on Sahlens. A client of mine was a foreman at Sahlens and told me that the owner is VERY particular about the meat that goes into the hot dogs. He told me that he has personally seen the owner come down and throw meat off the line that wasn’t to his standards. So….Sahlens I can tell you is NOT “lips and a-holes”. Lol.

Sahlen's destroy anything else out there. They are THEE best. I live in Seattle now and we've been shipping Sahlen's out here every summer for 20 years now. Buffalo foods all the way. 👍

I appreciate your intentions with this comparison test. I think you should include the nutritional values to each one in the order of your preference from first to last. But if you’re only basing it on flavor, then you’ve done your job but 1250 mg of sodium in one hotdog is absolutely insane.

I grew up on Oscar Meyer (they're great in mac-n-cheese) and they were our family's go to frank, but later on I discovered Nathan's and I'm quite pleased. I've always wanted to try Sabrett's, but I don't know where to find them in my area. The adventure begins!
@bighuge10602 жыл бұрын
All we had as kids were Oscar Meyer franks and for decades I thought that's what hotdogs all tasted like. It's a very unique flavor. However, one all-beef frank later, I realized there was a world of difference. Back to Oscar Meyer, my father used to make something he called Italian hotdogs which were Oscar Meyer franks cut up and cooked in oil with potatoes and onions. After eating this so many times (we were a family of seven on a low income), I became nauseated by them. We used to cook hotdogs over a flame in the fireplace, too. All OM. I'm sure we had to have had them with baked beans and with macaroni and cheese somewhere along the road.

I don't like Sabretts as much. They use that fake smoke flavoring and don't have that crunch when you bite into them.

My Mom ate a hot dog, or whatever the locals had that resembled one, on every continent and many islands around the world.
