Microsoft is becoming like Apple in all the wrong ways. Taking away features like a headphone jack for no reason, and raising the prices, is really not great.

@@MashITTech what’s your opinion of surface pro’s vs Lenovo Yoga’s? I want a light portable touchscreen ‘tablet’ style device which an iPad functions as, but I want proper USB ports and also the ability to install and run linux distros and you can’t run linux on iPads, I would need a MacBook Air to get USB ports and dualboot linux but then I’m stuck with the keyboard when most of the time I want the convenience of a touchscreen tablet sized device. The Surface Pro’s and Lenovo Yogas seem the better options? Neither are specifically ‘linux compatible’ but both with work with linux compatible wifi usb dongles and headphone ports of Bluetooth drivers don’t work with linux etc while the iPad pros seem very limiting But which one is best value for light multitasking and content/video watching etc? This is exactly the question I'm looking at for work, thank you for addressing this. As an office worker type, for my use the improvements are nice to see but not useful and the price difference not meaningful - work is paying. Your camera test in particular was nicely done. I've saved a few (Canadian dollars) by ordering the bundle through Costco and despite the unfortunate lack of fun colour, am quite happy with the deal at the moment.

I like the Microsoft Pro, but how they can justify $448 to replace a $10 battery by a premium week turn around service then get "lost" (stolen) for two months and then give a three month extended warranty as compensation. The hardest part to swallow is I rarely used it unplugged.

Another thing to keep in mind is the design flexibility for repairing. Surface 8 is tough to repair compared to the higher design flexibility of Surface 9 repairing. That aspect should be seen too.

I bought a Surface Pro 8, two months ago for $1321, $478 less than the rrp in Australia of $1799 and it runs very smoothly. Mainly use Word and One Note. This review was the one I was looking for except I would have liked you to test both in Recommended mode, as that is what I use and is the default set on the device. I was in the same position needing an upgrade on my old laptop, and needed one for work as well as personal. So I needed all the MS software, but nothing cpu intensive. And the SP9 wasn't enough of an upgrade to justify the already high price tag. So I now have the SP8. I also looked at the Macbook Air, and it being not upgradable at all, no touch screen, and possibly not so compatible with MS software, it got pushed aside rather quickly.

I have using my Surface Pro 9 for monthes. The drawback is the removed 3.5 headphone jack, forcing me to use wireless headphones instead. The left are merits. It is easy to carry out everyone. And the annotation on the pixel sense is the best for some applications only on desktop systeme. The most amazing is the SSD-slot that I have inserted a 2TB ssd after its purchase.

I was surprised you mentioned that the Surface Pro 8 got dynamic refresh rate with a firmware update. My Surface Pro 8 has the latest firmware and it doesn’t have DRR. The only way I was able to get DDR was by manually installing the Intel display drivers. I was then able to enable it. Interestingly if you try to get an updated display driver through Device Manager, and have the newer Intel driver installed, it will revert back to the original drivers thus removing DDR. I had to again reinstall the Intel drivers using their Intel Driver and Support Assistant app.
@lawrencetaylor2474
@lawrencetaylor2474 2 жыл бұрын
I'd suggest being careful with the Intel drivers as I too used them for a while. The latest updates are using that ARC thing and although the site says it's compatible with the Intel Xe graphics, the latest versions started messing with my machine - causing screen crashes and total lock ups. I finally uninstalled all of that and went back to the MS OEM driver and all the problems went away. The thing about the Intel drivers are that they may not include the OEM specific device updates that MS provides for the Surface and that could potentially cause issues, as it eventually seemed to do to me.
@markmoriarty7760

thanks for a nice review. Just have a little feedback, relating to how I would have found it to be more useful towards a more sound purchasing decision, as most of your viewers might be doing just like myself. While all the syn. cpu benchmark scores tell us a bit of the potential performance characteristics of the processor, I think what would be helpful is to actually focus on day to day use cases more, where it really matters. It's similar to buying cars, super sport cars capable of 180mph speeds, vs everyday Corollas that is just fine around town, say in London streets. Where would you actually use that 500hp engine and sticky handling. I'd say it's quite useless. So, back to the tablet, most gamers will be looking elsewhere, and others needing multi-core processing power will be looking for the "h" variant, or "p" for Intel. I would venture to say that most surface pro users are going to be browsing, utilizing MS Office automation software etc.... so does the 9th gen multi-core processor really matter? in every day browsing, powerpoint presentation, will I notice a difference, what about media consumption? using cyberlink dvd software, where the real actual everyday use "really is".... just food for thought.

Great comparison! The affordable models in each line have only 8GB RAM. Could you do a video evaluating the value of 8GB vs 16GB on the Surface Pro line? Seems like 8GB is just adequate any more for basic productivity. So is 16GB worth it on these devices? thank you!
@MashITTech
@MashITTech Жыл бұрын
That is a good idea.I originally had the 8gb SP8 and during last Black Fridays sales I got a really cheap SP8 with 16gb. For me day to day use I really don't notice the difference and if I had payed full price I would have buyers remorse. My use case is: writing notes and scripts for these videos, light photoshop, research and web browsing, light sketching and watching the odd video.

a couple of things. 1. there's no way you're getting 7 hours of battery from normal use. have a read of reddit. 2. you do need headphone jacks because 95% of the people in my office (about 60 staff) use wired headphones for teams and whatever else. yes most of them have BT headphones when they leave, but in the office, almost everyone uses wired headphones. i use wired headphones in and out of the office.

Thanks for the in depth comparison. The surface pro 8 is still a contender and removing the earphone jacks in the newer devices and selling overpriced headphones and obsoleting millions of wired, perfectly functional high-quality headphones is just corporatism. Not environmentally friendly either. They will soon find a way to have devices burst into flames in our hands after two years. Keep up the good work!

Just picked up a second SP8 on run out to use for Fedora 37 Linux. Was wondering if I should spend the extra on an SP9, but hearing there is no headphone jack, I'm glad I didn't. Good to be able to switch between Windows and Linux on my dock as needed. For anyone interested, Fedora runs well except cameras, and battery life is only 4 hours. But Gnome GUI kills Windows on a tablet.

Heads up for surface pro 6, still a great device. Four years on. With screen bezels that are actually helpful in handling the tablet. Speakers and screen was phenomenal then and is so today. Only downside is lack of rechargeability from power banks. Concerning no type c - the logitech unifying dongles dont come in usb type c so I guess its a win for surface pro 6.

I assume there are design engineering reasons for these changes which make the 9 a bit more efficient. For example, grouping the ports reduces the amount and complexity of wiring inside.

Depends on how much you need for performance and battery life. If the Intel 11th gen CPU is sufficient enough and you don't mind using chargers, then Surface Pro 8 is the better pick. If performance matters because you are fighting for a work promotion, then the Surface Pro 9 could give you an edge.

We had the first RT's, right up until the Pro 8 (bulk used were Pro 4's). Disappointed they're still using the Surface Connect Port, which they really should replace with another USB-C and help standardise charging.....not to mention that their chargers are totally over priced (plus the V2 Dock added another £100 to the price over the original Dock). As a business, the other issue was repairs, which only gives you the option to send off in the post, when compared to other manufactures offering next day onsite repair. Don't get me wrong, they're nice bits of kit (I'm typing on my Pro 7), but not fanatically durable over time, which is another reason we're now moving away from them.
