Thank you Shelley, Though I am always using musk fluid, but today, I’ve learned a new technique from you by using soap for brushes and sponges, I believe that it is the hidden solution for the gumming problem when using brushes with fluid musk.

Masking fluid contains Latex. If you have a latex allergy you can search for the latex-free masking fluid (or drawing gum as it's sometimes called). The crepe tool is used for removing the masking after it's dry or take masking tape wrapped sticky-side-out around your fingers. The dry masking fluid sticks to it wonderfully! Rubbing off the masking fluid with your bare fingers not only doesn't work well but your watercolour paper will absorb the natural oils from your hands.

Thank you Shelley....Very helpful tutorial. Can you please let me know the brand of masking fluid you are using and the crepe rubber tool...is it available in Amazon?
@shelleypriorfineart7 жыл бұрын
Adolf Dassler Thanks for the comment Adolf. I'm glad you found this useful. The masking fluid I'm using in the demo is Windsor & Newton. I've used other brands like Demco Artist Series and Pebeo drawing gum and they work equally well. The crepe tool is typically known as a 'rubber cement pick up tool'. You can find these materials available from a number of online sources.

Hi Shelly how do you decipher what is non staining?
@shelleypriorfineart7 жыл бұрын
Dee-dee well if you go to the manufacturers website for whichever paint you are using they will normally have a listing of each pigment and whether it is staining, granulating, transparent etc. If you can’t find the info online simply paint a good rich swatch of colour on a scrap piece of the same watercolour paper you’ll be using. Let it dry and then try and remove as much as possible with a slightly stiffer wet brush. If it leaves a stain behind it’s a staining colour.

I'm struggling to open this brand of bottle, any tips please ?
@shelleypriorfineart7 жыл бұрын
Hi Amanda. I like the masking fluid but personally hate the design of that bottle. Everyone seems to struggle with opening it. What I have tried with pretty good success is to set the bottle on the table, press down on the lid and rotate the bottle several turns. It seems one turn doesn't do it and you must keep the pressure on the lid. It may be childproof but also adultproof in this case. Best of luck!

Ok I will try that - hope it works as I was about to bin it out of sheer frustration. Thanks

Don't you know that D. Blick sells color (Orange) masking fluid? Or to make a color masking use a eyedropper
@shelleypriorfineart4 жыл бұрын
Victor West yes there are lots of tinted masking fluids available. Sometimes I want different coloured fluids depending on my application. Sometimes I just use white. This method gives me the flexibility to choose.

Hey, Shelley! Many Thanks! I have two questions: 1) How can I remove the fluid from the Paper? 2) How can I remove the fluid from the brush, sponge and toothbrush after use?
@shelleypriorfineart6 жыл бұрын
Ilona Krause thanks for your comments. Soap the brush or sponge before using masking. This is an important step! Then you simply rinse them out after with clean water after. A crepe tool is used to remove the masking. It is called a Pickup tool and is found in your art store near the masking fluid or rubber cement section. If you don’t have one in the meantime just roll some masking tape around your finger sticky-side-out and rub that on the dried masking fluid. It’ll stick wonderfully.

Strawberry Sparrow you are quite right. I had no video editing at the time I made this so it was one take only. I didn’t expect folks would wish to wait around for masking and paint to dry. I do intend to make ‘new and improved’ videos now that my editing issues are resolved. 😉

It’s so embarrassing but since I bought it I couldn’t even open it!!!! Who can help me plz
@shelleypriorfineart5 жыл бұрын
Soki Necola Don’t be embarrassed. Absolutely everyone struggles with those bottles ... good masking fluid but the most frustrating bottle design ever! Try setting it on the table, pressing down firmly on the lid while rotating the bottle until it releases. It may take several turns so maintain pressure on the lid the whole time.
