Your house looks so incredibly state of the art! By that I mean the materials, quality of construction, design, workmanship, etc. seems flawless!! Did you design it yourself? Are you a carpenter by trade? How much will this entire build cost you? Do you and your wife ever fight?? Great videos! Keep ‘em coming!

Wow, thank you! Haha yes designed it all ourselves. Engineers by education, no trade background. Some cost videos are published, will have more coming eventually once we have the editing bandwidth. We have our disagreements but overall are pretty good at collaborative problem solving 😄

Your under layer is a very important feature. Vinyl siding lets a lot of water behind it. Many people think it is water tight but water goes behind it through all of the J channel around widows and doors. With the plywood sheathing you do not need to screw the vinyl siding to studs. Sorry to see what the storm did to your finished job. Great video, thanks.

I was never a fan of vinyl but I've seen some very attractive installs of late that do a great job of simulating, for example, a board and batten style. If you're looking 5 or 10 years out before you build the main house, yes, the vinyl siding makes sense rather than the more expensive James Hardie products. Nice work. But then again, you're engineers, so your attention to detail is a cut above and it shows.

Good work, Alex and Elaina! I've never had much, if any, love for vinyl siding, but for something short-term, it certainly is cost effective and it won't hurt removing it in the future as much as a more premium option might. That storm damage though! I saw on IG when it happened, what a bummer. Glad everyone is safe.

Thanks Matt! We thought for a couple seconds the wind might take the house.. it was insane. Very glad to have sustained only the damage we did, others lost full barns and got trees through their houses

Looks great! What a bummer about the storm. Based on the trees that looked bent over like snapped tooth picks, replacing some vinyl siding is a minor price to pay. Glad everyone was safe.

The fastening is forgiving. If some screws are not exactly in the center of the slot it is ok. You are overthinking it way too much. Hitting the sheathing is fine too.

My guess is that the slots are not on "centers" because most vinyl siding is just fastened to the sheathing, not studs.

That’s true. Vinyl siding was meant to be fastened into the studs, that’s why slots are not 16” off center Regards from siding contractor from Canada😉

So sorry about the tornado(?) damage. When you assembled the door trim with the pocket hole screws did you glue the joint as well? The nice thing about PVC trim work is that gluing it is permanent and weatherproof. I haven't watched any of the other trim work that you have shown, so I don't know if you are gluing the joints or not.
@MasonDixonAcres
@MasonDixonAcres Жыл бұрын
Appreciate the comment! I actually think we forgot to glue those joints on the door trim. I’m not sure how much the glue is waterproof long term, but the amount of water that could potentially get in that joint and cause harm is pretty negligible imo

The last bit of video is reason you don’t get vinyl from Lowe’s or Home Depot. It’s thinner and doesn’t hold up, also becomes wavy, just look at a double wide trailer a year after put in. ABC supply sells some really nice vinyl for same price if not cheaper. Vinyl is tricky because if you buy the good stuff it’s almost same price as LP or James hardy. The pvc is awesome, I just did some board and batten as trim around 2nd floor dormers on a 5000 sq ft home. Itll last a lifetime but a little pricey
@MasonDixonAcres
@MasonDixonAcres Жыл бұрын
This is Ply Gem .040" thickness, since it's temporary we weren't going for the most premium vinyl out there. What brand/thickness do you typically get? In my fairly limited experience, the supply houses are more expensive than the box stores for the same exact product even with their house account discount applied. Some of the guys we've worked with on this project have been shocked to hear the prices I've paid, because they never look outside the supply house. Granted, there is certainly headache factor when buying from box stores, but with the best price and easy returns, sometimes it's worth it.

It received two small scratches, but the south wall did bear the brunt of the wind. The rainscreen was unaffected. I'm glad it gives continuous support to the back of the siding in the case of flying debris. Not something we really thought would come into play in our area, but clearly that's not the case going forward

What bad luck with that storm! I don’t have a Spotify playlist, but since you chose blue grassy soundtrack on this video, you might like the band Watchhouse, formally known as Mandolin Orange. They are acoustic laid back, maybe more suited for chilling out than working.

Vinyl siding is the ugliest siding possible. I have put up 1,000’s sq. Ft. Of vinyl. The biggest downside with vinyl siding is ultraviolet radiation deterioration over time. Vinyl siding eventually gets chalky looking. It also is prone to supporting algae growth over time. Prefer cementatious pre-finished siding or quality cedar siding.

Have you calculated the extra cost using the screws? I love the screws, but at what extra cost?
@MasonDixonAcres
@MasonDixonAcres Жыл бұрын
It was like 70 bucks for two pails of screws. Probably would have been 20 in nails. So call it 50 bucks extra for screws, and which will eventually get reused on something else when taken out
