I have a ruger m77/44. I would love to see you make one of these gel test with hornady xtp 240 and 300 gr.
@SolomonsOutdoorReviews3 ай бұрын
I can explain why the low velocity numbers. It is not the powder. It is the length of the bullet. All copper bullets are longer than traditional lead bullets. So a 200 grain bullet is as long as a 300 grain lead bullet. So, you can pack less powder in the case. Trust me I have been testing 44 mag for years. For example I get 1450 from hornady 300 grain and 1500 from double tap 300 grain so this ammo is on par.

I’d like to see you test out the Buffalo Bore .44 Mag deer grenade load. Also I’d like to see you test the Super Vel 180 grain solid copper hollow point load. I suspect the Super Vel load would be quite a bit faster than this Hornady load.
@mot0rhe4d406 ай бұрын
My suspicion is a fast burning pistol powder, mated with factory ammo "Velocity Numbers" and a longer barrel. May be the culprit for the lower FPS. Think that would still do the deed in the deer woods nevertheless
@realityawayfromreality34946 ай бұрын
Handgun Hunter printed right on the box makes me think that you have a valid suspicion. I would expect faster powder out of a load designed for revolvers. Still, terminal performance was actually pretty good for a copper alloy bullet.
@tombraley32122 ай бұрын
Great assessment of the cartridge. They definitely engineered it for handgun use, and I agree that I wouldn’t use it in my carbine, or as a combination cartridge. I also appreciated the suggested use for a light statured/recoil sensitive shooter. Cheers!
@johnnorman77086 ай бұрын
I suspected faster burning powder than the typical 296/110 powder class. Faster powder might be delivering more efficiency with the lighter bullet in handgun barrels, but doesn't gain much in Carbine barrels.

I'm still on the fence about copper bullets. Everyone I know that has used them said they saw basically an icepick wound. Small entrance, minimal damage to vitals and a relatively small exit. Any decent lead softpoint is just going to work, not so sure about copper monolithics.

Yep. JHP for expansion and less penetration, JSP for balancing expansion and more penetration. Tried and true.

@harrypeterson92875 ай бұрын
@@ronjones1414 I'm sure how rapid and reliable the expansion is depends on bullet construction and velocity. With that said, much like with handgun hollow points it seems like expansion is not a guaranteed thing. I have a friend whose knowledge and in the field experience far surpasses mine, he has hunted just about every corner of the globe. In some places he was forced to use copper, he has tried several different copper solids and found that none of them stacked up in performance to even a bottom shelf cup and core JSP from Federal, Winchester Remington etc. They all zipped through leaving an unimpressive wound in the vitals, an animal that required tracking and a weak blood trail.
@markoeberhardt31325 ай бұрын

Hitting that wood is revealing. Reduced penetration and increased expansion (physics.) I'm thinking a LWFN is still the way to go for elk, but there isn't a blacktail alive that would enjoy being hit by this thing at close range. That low starting velocity will shed quickly with the low BC. This load will drop fast and decrease below expansion threshold fast, probably a 75 yard deal, but seems to be great at close range. I agree, this is a kid's wild dream.

That is a very long bullet that may increase pressure more than a regular 200 gr JHP. I checked out the 200 gr copper bullet for rifle and was not impressed by the velocity some time ago. They do expand OK but I would like to know how they do on deer. With the 200 gr JHP you can get 2000 fps or so in a carbine. Good video.

@williamgaines97846 ай бұрын
Looking at the fireballs, the load was definitely not suffering from a "too long" barrel. That they did not gain a great deal may speak to their powder selection. I have shot certain loads in rifles that barely gained 100 fps over their stated handgun velocity and others that REALLY woke up in the longer barrels. The other consideration is actual projectile diameter to bore diameter. Monolithic bullets are not as pliable as cup&core and may not fill the bore as well which may allow pressure to go around it rather than behind. Those bullets should hammer any animal inside of 100 yards, from pistol or rifle with a chest or shoulder shot.

hello, In France it is the only copper ammunition available (several months of delay) I was thinking of buying some to dismantle them then change the powder charge because I already knew its speed deficit in a long barrel, I can have H110, what weight of powder would you advise me? I think you will find my project strange because you have everything available in the US but in France this is far from being the case. I own a Citadel Levtac

So my theory on that speed is powder. Im looking into reloading 357 for my lever gun. But I'm learning the wrong powder will get you hot nasty speed in a 6 inch barrel. But all your powder is burnt and used by the 10 inch mark and you really dont get returns with more barrel.

love your content man. I have a question I'm sure that you can answer and id trust based off your extensive testing. I have a 25-06 that I reload for. I have alot of 100gr psp PPU bullets. I worked a load up and then shot a buck at around 80 yds. bullet fragmented based on blood guts bone at impact. didn't recover the animal. Would it be fair to look at your 243 100gr results and reload the 25-06 to those velocities and expect expansion penetration based on your results. I know I can load the 25-06 with noslers maxed out and be fine but I have this ammo and these little coastal nc deer don't need noslers. I'm really looking for a 25-06 load for 100yds. thanks for reading.
@masonleather_outdoors5 ай бұрын
Thanks for asking and I’m glad to be of service! If it were me, I would not use 100gr PPU soft points in a 25-06 for hunting deer at all, even down-loaded. A .257” 100gr bullet is shorter than a .243” 100gr bullet, thus having less sectional density and likely causing it to not hold together as well as the same bullet and weight in a smaller caliber. I have deer hunted with the 243 pretty extensively and am careful with my shots even with the “best” 243 ammo. The 25-06 is an excellent whitetail cartridge, but again if it were me, I’d not hamper myself with bullets that aren’t going to give you much if any margin for error, which at the end of the day is one of the reasons I do these tests and make these videos. I’d use the 100gr SPs for practice, plinking and varmints if you do any varmint hunting and use the Nosler Partitions or something else appropriate for deer.
