@@melzam7420 _"The "Double Trouble" refers to Dixie's problem of having to save Donkey and Diddy AND babysit Kiddy while she's doing it."_ Interesting idea, but inaccurate. If you're interested, I will explain the actual meaning behind the games title. It was an idea by Paul Weaver, the co-designer, and refers to the idea of two antagonists in the game. The idea was that the (first) "bad guy" (Khaos) was the robot, but there was to be a "real" bad guy (the one who is pulling all the strings), called Baron K.Roolenstein who remained hidden for much of the game. Remember at the end of the game when he is seen hiding behind the curtain until you defeat the robot? To be fair, the meaning of the game's title is certainly not obvious, and even I (as one of the programmers) didn't know why that name was chosen until I asked the designers what the "Double Trouble" was in reference to. So its not a surprise that no-one else worked out what it meant, either! It's possible, the "guy behind the curtain" idea may have come from ""The wizard of Oz"" and inspired the Lead designer (Andrew Collard) , but I can't confirm that as it never occurred to me to ask him at the time, whether the movie is what inspired the curtain sequence.

I personally liked the tone of DKC3; it felt kinda like a Scooby Doo episode. It starts out in a safe space like a vacation and then slowly builds up the tension. It also had a great mix of comedy and scary. The Kongs were also balanced well in this game. Kiddy was designed for offense with his roll attack, holding a barrel like a shield, and ability to stomp more enemies. Dixie was more mobile with her hair twirl and faster acceleration.

It's my second favourite of the three. First being the second. The Lost World in the second game is really hard, which is in a way a good thing, in the third game it isn't hard if compared to the second game, however, the varieties of levels are great, and it has the best variety of boss battles out of the three.

Found this video recently (probably because I'm a resident DKC3 defender so...yeah it was bound to pop up sooner or later) and it's always great to see that the early internet brainrot of "kIdDy KoNg mAKeS DKC3 BAAAAAAAAAAD" get slowly taken down bit by bit. Just wanted to add a few things as they help fill in some blanks. 1) You reference the N64 and point out that the save cave has mario 64 music and wrinkly plays an N64 sometimes, but that is literally why DKC3 was made the way it was made - the A-team at rareware had to go and get started learning the new console and making games for it. For an example - david wise actually did do a few tracks for DKC3 (mostly the tracks for the save cave) but he was working on "Pro Am 64" which later became Diddy Kong Racing. A lot of the more senior level designers and programmers were already at work on other titles, so new hires to rare were given the development tools for DKC1 and 2 and told to make DKC3. 2) When talking about the GBA, I'm surprised you didn't mention that the new tracks were mostly done by David Wise. At least, I don't think you mentioned it. I hear a lot of people say the GBA version is just "better" because of that, but I think a mix of the two would make the best DKC3 soundtrack. 3) Kinda going back to #1, but I have a theory that DKC3 is the way it is because of who was mentoring and training the younger developers. Think about it - Rare released only 3D adventure and platformer games on the N64, not 2D. ANd outside of platformers and adventure style games, the rest were still 3-D only. The co-workers of the team making DKC3 were busy making DK64, Banjo Kazooie, Blast Corps, Goldeneye 007, and Jet Force Gemini. So as this crew is using the tools and assets to make DKC3, they're probably getting taught on how to do "map" design, or even "world" design. My theory is that the open world map, and even some of the more sprawling levels with multiple paths and options, came from these developers cosntantly hearing about how Mario 64 is going to bea game changer and rare's own internal games are looking wilder and wilder. Overall, I keep going back to the idea that DKC3 is the link that connects the 2-D platformers of the SNES to the 3-D platform/adventure games of the N64. It's not "more DKC2", it's its own unique thing and the game is so much more memorable for it.

Now that you mention it, I would agree, "Double Trouble" doesn't carry much of a meaning for that game. "Triple Trouble" works for what was Sonic & Tails 2 in Japan, because there were three main villains in that game, whereas here, "double" barely refers to anything, with Kaos being the only known main antagonist for most of the game.

I have always liked Donkey Kong Country 3. I remember getting it as a christmas present from my dad in 1996. I had no idea that the game even existed at the time, and was very surprised by it. I had the first game and have played it a lot, but I had not tried the second game yet. I remember enjoying the different setting in the third game very much, and I liked the more northern environment. My favorite world of the first game was Vine Valley and this gave me a bit of the same. I also live in a northern country which would probably also influence it. I have always liked forest settings in games (Paramonia in Abe's Oddyssee, Mudomo vaults in Abe's Exoddus, Forest of illusion in Super Mario World and Rocky Pass in Need for speed 3 being some other examples). I later got to try the second game. I found it to be fun, but incredibly difficult. And I was not too fond of the pirate setting. It probably had a little to do with a local childrens franchise centered around a pirate that I was sick and tired of at the time.

It's because of hero worshiping. That's why people generally dislike it; The idea that DKC3 was made by the "B team" is often brought up, as if that has any bearing on the quality. That's also why haters insist on the music being bad, because it wasn't done by David Wise (even if he did compose a few tracks on DKC3). The whole "people didn't like it becausw the N64 was coming out" is an angle that is completely overdiscussed and mostly irrelevant IMO; Plenty of highly regarded games came out during the SNES' late stage and nobody ever brings up the N64 when discussing them. And no, the N64 in Wrinkly's save cave wasn't some omen placed there by the developers who knew their time was up or whatever, it's just a cute easter egg.

Oh, and minecarts, Indy Jones temples, treetops and the ropey ice cave. 3 is a bit cryptic as for where it is headed and kind of experimental. Not a crowd pleaser at all, so refined and interesting though. I love its mills and though this fucking one level manifests it badly, the waterfalls. I was just the right age to be a huge fanboy when DKC1 came out. I think a lot contributed to this and you got most of it. IMHO Nintendo’s Rising Sun-esque way of doing business cost us the fans a lot of opportunities for awesome experiences. Their disagreements with Sony, Rare, et al … bleh don’t get me started … plus you have the guys like me who never got to play DKC3 because when Squaresoft broke with Nintendo I followed Final Fantasy right over to Sony…this led to playing some of these games 3000 years later when the originals had been solidified in our gamer memories and who can compete in a gamers mind with our beloved childhood games? That’s just my experience of it. I’ve finally been playing it and yes, Dixie’s haircopter is the Peach’s hover of sleeper abilities that become some of the best. Yeah the music is def giving me a softie, but who could compare to David Wise? Gotta respect all the games as far as I see it, especially the ones caught in the middle of the huge jump from this bit to that bit that occurred during that time.

Anyways I really liked the video, as someone who tried to love the game but still ended up enjoying 2 more I still feel like there is a lot to appreciate about DKC3. In my mind DKC 3 is blind creativity, the game has some really cool ideas but a good chunk of them don't really get refined and polished enough to really be that enjoyable. For me this is some of the stage gimmicks like the falling waterfall Barrels, those penguins, and Kiddy Kong and Dixie Kong's balancing compared to Diddy and Dixie. When it's fun, its really fun, when it isn't it can be a little bland and needlessly frustrating.

I feel they didn't do enough to make Kiddy still ok to play if you lose Dixie. Dk is worse than Diddy overall but his strengths come up more by there being more foes he can handle and his barrel toss is overall better (granted Diddy using them as a shield has its plus quite often). plus while Diddy is better for platforming Diddy isn't packing a float option to make the gap wider. His extra speed and normal jump over Dixie I felt platforming wise easier as well. Kiddie's plus of water skip and taking out one baddie Dixie can't easily (less than Dk who can take out 3 easier than Diddy and one more in GBA) and holding the barrel as a shield means less when Dixie still gets shield affect as well.

Banana birds were done bad. Playing Simon says 13 times (14 in GBA) is not fun. Dk coins are better here I'll admit but too many of them were pretty lazy with how they were put in. Koin was just out in the open most of the time with a barrel to bust him open next to him. Animal pals weren't mixed. Squitter wasnt used enough. Parry is just dkc1 sqwaks but worse. Ellie is great in the level where you have to stay out of the water but most of the time I'd rather not use her. Which is a shame because she is a elephant. A animal powerhouse. Kiddy Kong was done dirty. Biggest gap in partner power in the series. It isnt even his looks that is the issue. Dk isn't as fast or jumps as well as Diddy but he can actually throw barrels (granted Diddy using em as a shield is very useful) and he beats 3/4 Types of enemies a lot easier than Diddy can (armadillo, klump, and krusha. In the gba he can slap the red light/green light foes when they aren't active as well). Kiddie only beats krusha easier. Dixie still gets barrel shield somehow in both games but also how she holds them lets her hit some bosses better. Oh and twirl. Diddy was faster than her and jumped better as well where as Kiddy moves the same as her minus situational stuff like water skip (you'd think that be useful if done right though. Plenty of levels want you to stay outof the water). Kiddy throws Dixie better but having a speed cut when he is holding her (unlike Diddy and Dixie where they at least had walking speed) makes the team up more situational well.
