Mass Effect 3 - Killing Wrex

Urdnot Wrex finds out about the sabotage to the Genophage cure, and Commander Shepard is forced to kill him.
This is an unavoidable and sad consequence of the full Renegade path. And also, a costly one, because it means loosing about 400 points in Krogan support, in exchange for 150 from the Salarians. Not a very good trade.
Note: ratings have been disabled for this video, same as with the Genophage mission one (from my current Renegade playtrough). Since it has such a sad outcome, it would only deserve thumbs down. Comments are still enabled.

Yea, ME2 and ME3 Renegade/Paragon routes are much different than back in ME1, in ME1 Renegade is more like the kind of soldier that do anything to get the job done and is occasionally an ass, in ME2 and 3 you're mostly just an ass.

@@Kai-tn4yx Yea, which is the most logical choice out of the two, sparing the Rachni queen is nonsensical even for Paragon, their race rampaged across the galaxy and all evidence you have of this queen being innocent is based solemnly on her word, so because the Paragon can never ever compromise at all he/she chose to unleash one of the most dangerous specimen in the galaxy, all because he/she can't just suck it up and get the job done, I kill the Rachni queen even knowing that she helps in the future because trusting her at that moment makes no sense.

@@AxelDeGroat I am honestly not sure about that. I love the choice in Zaeed´s loyalty mission for instance. Do you care about the workers, or about accomplishing the mission? It´s also a nice callback to the story Anderson tells you about him and Saren. Essentially, Saren caused an explosion in a refinery to create a distraction, killing hundreds of workers with poison gas. By going after Vido, you are basically no better than Saren (even though technically, Zaeed caused the explosion). Another good example is Thane´s loyalty mission. The Renegade route (killing the hostage) allows you to solve two problems in one go. Kolyat has no leverage anymore, so he has to give up, and the xenophobic asshole campaigning against humans is dead, so the ward can go back to normal. Everybody´s happy. Also, saving the Collector Base makes sense. It´s what we do in the real world. We didn´t destroy all the medical and technological knowledge the Nazis gained by experimenting on prisoners. It´s how we were able to land a man on the Moon in 1969. So why should we destroy the Collector Base? Other than moral vanity, it makes no sense. It also makes a much more sense for Cerberus to be so powerful in ME3 if you have saved the Base.

I hate it because this scene is so masterfully done. The music, the intensity, the acting! Makes you feel guilty for not seeing it in game. But really, you either killed Wrex in Mass Effect 1 or you're completely on-board with him come 3. So a majority of players never saw this unless they really thought "Wrex is cool but I'm not curing the genophage despite all his reforms and effort."

The best part about this is that it’s not a consequence that manifests immediately, you don’t know when Wrex is gonna show up, that way you can’t just go back to your last save. You actually suffer the consequences.

That's the beauty about sequels, Unfortunatly too few games has this, at best they name drop or it's never mentioned ever or worse yet, they force you into a Canon Route where you did X when you actually did Y. Mass effect and dragon age are the few ones that actually does it well. I would've added fire emblem to the list, but even that has a canon route, all they do is give reoccuring chars better stats... Atleast the older ones, can't speak for the newer.

It's a hand cannon that is advertised as being capable of easily dispatching a charging Krogan, and Shepard did shoot him several times, some of the shots of which seem to have hit his exposed face. I do think it is a little weird that Wrex didn't have his shields active though. Mass Effect is a little inconsistent with that in their cutscenes, or maybe he just had no intention of coming out of this alive, and intentionally didn't have them active.

6 year later response but an argument can be had that he’s the leader but not in the most formal miliatarisitic sense the way the other council races would recognize, the Krogans are also a non council race and there would be mutual skepticism between the inner circle of Krogan politics and media and those of the outer galaxy. Wether this is before or after the attack on the citadel the galactic narrative may still be dismissive of promoting panic and wartime prep. Also, another angle - think how many KZbinrs there are with 1 million+ subscribers. How many would you recognize on the street or even follow? How many receive prime time news coverage or receive coveted late night appearances, segments, etc today? Now imagine the parallels on a level of intergalactic coverage with an outsider species

BioWare hates Wrex. You can kill him in ME1 or ignore him by not having him in your squad. On a new play through in ME2 he is replaced by Wreav and it’s as if he doesn’t exist. And you can screw him over in ME3. This scenario is very dark and I can’t imagine screwing over Wrex like that.

In the ground vehicle Wrex keeps talking about how the concil cannot keep his race locked into one planet and that they will beggin to expand as soon as their numbers swell., He does not even care about EVE, he keeps calling her "the female" as if she is some sort of object to start having babies with. And how they behave with agression at every step even against each other is very telling of what is going to happen once their numberss grow,. I mean they are already endengered species and they still ritualistically kill each other in combat and disregard each others lives. I feel Wrex's death in ME3 is more intense than ME1 because Wrex's death scene in ME1 was sudden and unexpected he wasn't too attached to Shepard and his only thoughts were about the genophage. But the ME3 death was a betrayal. Shepard spit on Wrex's friendship, loyalty and trust and killed him with his own hands and wrote his death as a crazy hormone action.

Not just that but if you recall wrex was also using that time to genuinely consider what all the krogan had to change in order to not suffer the same fate they did 5,000 or so years ago,I made a comment but essentially the thing everyone overlooks is unlike wreave if you kept wrex alive he genuinely WANTS to make changes for the better of his people this being evident when he shares the position of power with eve and even stating as I quote "I know the other krogan won't like that eve has a say on things to go around here but they'll get over it now that they have a reason to hope" whereas wreave makes it known after the cure is dispensed they will fight the reapers but after that the galaxy better be ready for the krogan empire...in short of the two krogan wrex should have been given a cure but if he didn't live in the playthrough others have done screw wreave,he's an asshole

@KubernetePirata Well, it's unlikely you'll find that, because this scene happens only when taking a decisively renegade path. When you do that (like me in this video), the renegade options are always on the lower right. Alternating between upper right and bottom right is alternating between paragon and renegade. Such gameplay would not maximize either path, resulting in fewer paragon or renegade interrupt/special menu options.

Wrex is far from perfect and he's not that trustworthy! His kind has also shown time and again that they are irresponsible, dangerous, and can't be trusted; and it's a real shame that Bioware makes you resort to being a backstabber if you're pro genophage--you can't even debate it with anybody! The genophage, after all, has quite possibly been the only thing keeping the Mass Effect universe spinning for the past 1,000+ years! Anyone who chose this option ignores the entirety of wrexes life was spent trying to be different from ancestors yet also respect their old ways,he may have been a krogan but he was much more fit to lead the krogan than if we left him die in me1 because everyone is forgotten one thing of note. While wrex and eve advocated to a new dawn that wasnt dictated by their past focusing solely on not doing the wars and such which caused the genophage to begin with whereas wreave in EVERY interaction makes it known when hes the boss he WILL have the other races pay even if not at that point and time due to the reapers. In short you have one who sought to genuinely make his people better by doing things like Sharing his position in power with eve and the other who refused to leave the past alone now that they had a reason to hope for something more meaning the only instance this should have even been a thing is if it was because wrex died earlier on unlike wreave.

I did this on my first play through. I think people are too soft to make the big decisions. The Kroggen are unsyable agressive species and this event proves it.he did not even let sheppard pr9ve him wrong. That is how thing krogen friendships alliances and friendships are. And then he was talking about reproducing quickly and conquering other planets. No way , the krogen were going to be a pest to deal with after the war with the reapers .. so i shot Mordin and Wrex . My "friendship " with this bi-polar creature was going to cost thousands of lives in the future. So good ridance.

Holy shit... This is such a well-done scene. They chose the perfect music and camera angles for this. The look on Wrex's face before he rasies that gun the last time, covered in blood. "I know what you did, Shepard." And they really laid this on thick for a moment they had to know most people would never see. But in some ways, it almost feels like the only conclusion to Wrex's arc. In real life, most people wouldn't cure the genophage. It would change the world they knew and lived in too much. And if they were living Shepard's life, they would have the skills to survive Wrex's attack. He would probably end up exactly as he did here. One way or another. This'll never be my choice in a playthrough, but imagine what it would be like to betray someone this way and have to feel the full effects of it.

Doing this and betraying Legion are good choices. Your values are messed up. The Krogan are a blight on the galaxy and raid and pillage for fun. When the war ends nobody is in a position to handle the Krogan's population boom. Wrex is the only thing stopping that from happening but he won't live forever, hell he might even die in the battle for Earth. The Geth seek to exterminate the Quarians and have been a major problem since the beginning of ME1, so it makes sense to take them down. They're extermination-bots who are one programming glitch away from going right back to "kill everybody" mode.

Unlike organic species, they don't really have free will, and their history proves how dangerous they are, being a hive mind and all. As for the glitch yeah if we're to judge an entire species on actions alone the quarian admirals are hardly saints. Except maybe tali a little biased I know but I usually ship her and Shep. Sometimes you have to make hard decisions for what's right. The Krogan are 90% hostile and 10% agreeable. The galaxy is ruined and nobody has a shot of facing a Krogan horde in 20 years. If Wrex is the only thing stopping the Krogans from attacking the galaxy, then it's a time bomb and curing them is a mistake. Wrex just isn't that important anyway. Sure he helped you a few times in ME1 but he did it mostly for his own purposes. He threatens you on Noveria to exterminate the Rachni, he threatens you on Virmire, and he's the "best" the Krogan have to offer? Please.

Krogan are not a threat. The united galaxy would easily defeat them, especially if they knew it was coming. Salarians secretly altered genophage to keep it working, Turians had a bomb ready to go on Tuchanka, the cunning of the united Galaxy would keep Krogan in check. They could refuse to sell weapons or starships to them. It's not worth the risk of Reapers not only destroying the galaxy, but future civilizations as well. Just help the Krogan. Have a genophage 2.0, some specific Krogan only biological weapon ready to go if they rebel.

You contradict yourself in the very first sentence. Consider your opinions carefully. And if your concern is stopping the reapers then betraying the Krogan is a better choice since you can only get the help of both the Salarians and the Krogan if you betray the Krogan. You technically have lower fleet strength score if you help the Krogan. So this argument doesn't work either. The Krogan forces are already at your command whether you cure them or not. The only argument you have for curing the Krogan is some ethical point about not reducing breeding rates in a species that overbreeds as it is. They are violent, uneducated, low IQ, low morality, and borderline sociopathic beings more interested in blasting your head off for honor than curing themselves. Wrex said it pretty plainly in ME1.

There is no evidence the Krogan would actually win in a war against the rest of the galaxy. They lost the last one due to the cunning of the other races, and now those races have a new, powerful, and utterly ruthless ally - humans. Possibly even the Geth. The odds are entirely stacked against the Krogan, it's foolish to fear them over the Reapers, and unless I'm mistaken you lose assets by sabotaging unless you can fool the Krogan, which most people don't have the option for unless they are playing the game in a very meta way.

@@Yuributts Winning a war isn't really the point. They'd kill an immeasurable number of people in the process. The Krogan don't really care if they win or lose, they just love fighting. They're too stupid and arrogant to let those facts stop them from invading others. Especially with vengeance on their minds for what the Turians and Salarians did to them. A war is imminent once Wrex dies, and we both know it. What's the point of having more Krogan anyway? Even if they didn't start a war and they were truly good bois and never hurt a fly, they still don't produce jack squat to the galactic community. They're thugs at best. Mercs for hire. What's the appeal to creating more? The reality is even the best case scenario (which let's face it, won't happen) isn't all that appealing versus the risks of a massive Krogan invasion forcing everyone to yet again ban together to stop them. And in the event of a second war, you bet your ass they'll stoop to a harsher lesson than the Genophage to put the Krogan out of their misery for good. Reality is, you're not really helping the Krogan by giving them higher birth rates. If they fight a war (which they will) and they lose (which you predict) the Salarians and Turians will likely kill them off for good. There are just no good outcomes to curing the genophage. It's better to just leave them with lower birth rates until they prove they can actually be useful to the galaxy.

@@renaldoawesomesauce1654 The point is quite simple. You get more assets curing the genophage than sabotaging it (unless you can fool them). Defeating the Reapers at any cost, that's what Shepard should be doing, even if the cost is a *possible* war the Krogan would likely lose. The very reasons you look down on them are the very reasons the idea of them winning is a joke. Hell even the Krogans winning a future war is preferable to the Reapers winning. The correct answer is simply whichever answer leads to a greater success against the reapers.

@@rsdillbot3646 if today the Germans announced an expansion in their military, as the world is becoming more unstable and the UN needed help we would cheer them (different attitude to what they were saying in 1940), but what if they announced an expansion to reclaim the blood, soil and living space that was rightfully their's & to right the wrongs inflicted by the allied powers? Likewise, You would need to see a cultural change in the krogan to loosen the control of the genophage. It only keeps their population expansion in line with the rest of the species in the galaxy, without it the krogan would naturally dominate in a few generations. KZbin saving mordin (which you can do)

@@ladyselin35 It's pretty obviously implied throughout mass effect that the Krogan aggression on display is not only directed at the creators of the genophage but more importantly made worse because of the circumstance the genophage facilitated After the vast majority of Krogan females became infertile and reproduction was commodified it was only a matter of time before the males started fighting for their small chance of creating offspring They're life was meaningless without aggression and violence but it was not only because of their nature but more so to do with the outside forces they were subjected to. They had no choice other than to resort to a dominance hierarchy based on brute strength In short: the genophage predisposed the Krogan to violence and in stead of controlling Krogan aggression only served to exacerbate it

@@darestone3335 They literally destroyed their homeworld with nuclear fire. The krogan council member attacked the others because the council demanded they return the colonies they had forcefully taken from the asari. That's what led to the krogan rebellions. It was ALL on the krogan and the fact that they cannot control their over breeding. The main reason krogan birth so many offspring is because so many die due to the violent nature of the krogan. Wrex is already pretty old, he has another, what, 500 years? He was also making jokes already while curing the genophage about how they'll need to start settling a bunch of planets because how fast the krogan breed. It's only a matter of time. The dalatrass may be unlikable, and cold, but she was right. The salarians usually are. Wrex is ONE krogan, against what will soon be billions.

@@Gwyllgi This is such an interesting moral dilemma that BioWare created. The Krogan are very much analogous to humans in my opinion. To others they seem to simply overpopulate and destroy the things that stand in their way but surely there must be more to them? Why they would Wrex and Eve seemingly gain so much support after the genophage? Mabye and just maybe the Krogan are thinking, feeling, living beings that can make mistakes and then strive to correct course.
