If you get laid off, immediately apply for unemployment, and then treat yourself to a fine meal to celebrate the time you were employed. Then, jump back on the horse and apply for as many jobs that it takes to find another one. If you have a degree and the school year is still in session, be a substitute teacher. It allows you the flexibility for you to interview. Been there, done that, more times than I can recall. You do not have the luxury of feeling sorry for yourself in this dynamic everchanging work environment. Cry later in happiness when you have found another job.

Do teachers not need to be qualified to teach in the US? In the UK you need either a Bachelor of education degree or a different degree plus a postgrad qualification to teach which is an intensive year of study plus working in schools and being observed teaching after which you pass or fail. You can't just become a supply teacher without a teaching qualification here.

I'm almost seventy and just retired. I had many jobs over the past 50 years and was laid off or fired from most of them. It's not that big of a deal. You go out and get another job. Just make sure you have some savings to get through to the next job.

My wife got laid off at the beginning of December from a mortgage company she worked at for the past 5 years. She was one of the top closers for the company and won a few rewards. During Covid she was closing 120 to 130 loans a month. Even with the housing market being tight she still was closing 70 loans a month. Her company did her dirty as a lot of corporations. They asked her to take a 10% pay cut at the start of November only to lay her off at the start of December. I told her they were hoping she quit after the pay cut. But if she didn’t they know they wouldn’t have to payout as much on unemployment. To make matters worse they had a big Christmas Party celebrating a wonderful quarter where they sold 300 million in home loans. Wife is devastated! She has been in the mortgage business for 30 years. I told her it’s time to move on from that field because it’s too volatile.

@@tlr1604 Thank you very much! My wife will be 50 in April. At the moment she doesn’t plan on going back into the mortgage industry. She wants to try something different but don’t know what yet. She’s applying for several jobs daily so now it’s a waiting game. She is still waiting on her unemployment to be approved. Thank God we are not in a financial bind. And the fact her boss did her like this with no severance package is disgraceful.

@EvangelismforGod
@EvangelismforGod 6 ай бұрын
@@spacecoyote6646 I agree but she is burned out at this point with the business. She was laid off from a different company about 10 years ago. And recently a few of her friends in the business has been laid off and decided to get out. My best friend which was a president of a few banks in the past decided to get out of the business in 2008 after the market crashed. He had been laid off several times prior to that and had enough. So he decided to open his own State Farm office which he still does currently today. The mortgage business is good money but it is a lot of stress and it can be very volatile. During the refinance boom with the 2 to 3% interest rates over the pandemic I watched her clock in at 7 AM and work till 12 or 1am often for almost 2 years. Her best month during this time was 140 loans. And I tried to stay out of the way because she was very stressed. The company knew that she was able to do these loans and many of them would get dumped on her at the last minute. And for them to do her the way they did right before Christmas shows how greedy and evil they are. Over the weekend we saw how very bad reviews from former employees are starting to show up on Indeed. Companies like this better hope they don’t go under because of their greed and mistreatment of others.

Great advice, thank you. Things happen -- it's important to also: Don't beat yourself up. Terrible things happen to everyone. You will fall down in life, or be punched down by another, thousands of times -- pick yourself up a thousand and one. Be kind to yourself. Importantly, and not easy to do -- take a step back and consider what you need financially and consider volunteering in the free time you have when you are not job hunting. It helps with your ego, you can still network, and sometimes it might lead to an interim job offer. Be your own advocate.

I got the "yeah , but it destroys your body" thing about workign as an electrician .. lol. No, working stressed out , on call 24/7 no set sleep schedule, that will kill you. sit at a desk for 80 hours a week will kill you. Fly here and there arrive in the dark, leave in the dark. I've been to cities that I literally never seen as I was in the office the entire time or driving in the dark to the airport. I worked a 72 hour shift, saved a $4 million dollar project with one 18 year old , 5 rent a help desktop support guys and a moving crew. The project manager for the whole thing (a competent if difficult older women) was replaced at the last min with a 20 something women with prada shoes and a fresh Harvard degree who would have made a decent Cheerleader or maybe help organize a bake sale if someone else did the math. She left promptly at six. i was a contractor making $18.50 an hour without benefits and IT guys are exempt from overtime thanks to the 2005 congress. My team, went from 27 to 2 , doing the same work(I wrote software to automate everything by then so that's all I needed most of the time). But this was. Anthem wellpoints Pharmacy. And it wasn't just a company that would lose money, it was people not getting their prescriptions. > So I didn't leave, I didn't stop working, I didn't eat. I ran, for 72 hours. and Monday morning they were up and online. Despite prada shoes forgetting to even tell the Network guy to... BUILD THE NETWORK!. Or get security clearance to let us in the building! They wanted me to do it again and I told them. It's very poor management to literally work your employees till they die, I'm going to have a stroke if I remain here. And never worked IT again. The company tried to replace me, ... with my best friend LOL. He worked 2 days, called me wondering where I was thinking I still worked there, found out i quit and he couldn't run the project without my software anyway. So he just hung around collecting pay for a few weeks playing games on the pc, then left. They lost the contract with anthem after that I think.

I’m almost 25 years old, and I’ve been laid off from both my corporate jobs in tech. I’ve enjoyed what I’ve done in my 2.5 years, but it’s been a technical role that takes a lot of training so I haven’t been able to “do” the job for all that long at either company before being laid off. Being cut from both my first two corporate jobs is really hard on me and it’s tough to know what I want to do next, where I even want to go next, etc. I took the holiday season off from my job search, but it’s been hard to get back in the workforce. Believe me I’ve been trying extremely hard, I’ve been going above and beyond to connect with employers and even earning interviews after I’ve been auto denied by their AI machine because I’ve worked so hard to interview, but it’s been so hard on my to face another layoff and to be right back where I was searching a year ago. If anyone has any sound advice for a single, floundering 24 year old, I’m all ears. And I certainly appreciate your prayers ❤️

Hey fellow techie! Senior Automation Engineer with over 12yo in multiple BigN/MANGA companies in EU. The reality is it is only in the US where everyone is booting juniors because your salaries are severely inflated. I am always interviewing to keep my sword sharp and I can tell you, the EU market is still hot for Seniors. You will have to market yourself as MID and polish up your CV. First of all, think of it this way: imagine this Ken douche has to actually work a real job and not have all the wonders technologies offered, no phone, no laptop, no software on it. Can you? Can you imagine a future without Internet and software? NO. Software is never disappearing as a vertical in business, so YOU, WILL, NEVER, BE, CHURNED, BY, PROGRESS. Unless you don't learn new things and keep up to date with latest trends, ofc. Consider this short list: 1. Network with your peers/managers/professors from Uni. Reach out, ask for open positions, have your CV ready to send it. Don't forget we get hefty bonuses for bringing in new hiders via referrals. Over 50% of jobs never reach the general populous, because it is first marketed internally (you probably know this by now). 2. Start right now working on a side-hustle, seriously, working Agile, having your own sprints, writing your own tickets, doing your own reviews, setting up a WORKING, SCALABLE, BUSINESS. This is free time you should really try to make the most out of. The experience with the technologies you'll work will accrue and will 100% be a great addition to your portfolio. 3. Your CV should have at least an interesting GitHub. Again, since you're free now, try to go to your favorite tool's GitHub page and try to contribute. Go to open issues, setup the development locally and try to fix some bugs. I had jobs where I was poached on GitHub. "Leave no stone unturned" 4. Stop listening to this Ken fellow, he has no idea what he's talking about. I am only hear to listen to his shallow propaganda and laugh my ass off. 5. I mentor multiple 24yo's. If you're smart enough, you'll find me. Reach out if you need more guidance. 6. Good luck and PLEASE, enjoy life first! You'll work all your life either way. Use it as a blessing to be better. You got this!

I am luckily in a financial position I don’t NEED to work immediately, but also am doing everything I can to get back in, I just am so values driven that I really want to be intentional about the company I ultimately choose. There’s just so much emotions and I am struggling to manage it all and continue to give 100% to the search with no guarantee that it will work out or when it will end. In anticipation of these challenges, I doubled down on my commitment to my career in 2020, pursued an additional online degree, and accepted more assignments to ensure I could withstand the tough period I foresee between 2024 and 2027. I believe the difficulties we'll face during that time won't be significantly influenced by who occupies the White House; it will be tough regardless.

What is going to be needed is a basic income for all, as a lot of these jobs are not coming back. People are becoming redundant as A.I. takes over and new jobs are not being created. Many people will not see permanent work again!

And just where is the money for a basic income for all going to come from? The government doesn't produce anything to sell to raise money. Any money the government has is from taxing those who are working. Printing more money is the very definition of inflation--the government inflating the money supply which leads to price/wage spirals that make life miserable for everyone. Government needs to reduce regulation to allow for more entrepreneurs and more creativity in job creation; as well are get rid of minimum wage laws and allow businesses to pay what a persons knowledge, initiative and productivity warrant.

Actually, the best employees are often laid off. Why? They know their stuff and either their boss or colleagues don't want competition for their jobs or are looking to cut staff and hire in friends and family. Nowadays, people get fired or laid off for the most ridiculous reasons -- it's not like in the past when it meant something serious.

Ken Coleman Obviously Knows Nothing About Economics. Revenue (income) is rarely, if ever consistent across time and profit (revenue less the cost of doing business: inventory, labor, etc.) is even less reliable. This works against a business's plan to remain in operation over time and not just for a month or a year. Business is not a 'gamble' except rhetorically. Business is a calculated risk believed to favor success with diligence and persverence. When economic circumstances defeat the strategies and tactics of a business plan that business has to adjust. This may entail taking on unanticipated debt or reducing staff and services. This may require raising prices for goods and services provided by a business. THE ONE CONTROLLABLE AND EXPENDABLE ASPECT OF IMPEDIMENTS TO SUCCESS FOR BUSINESSES AND THEREBY SUCCESS FOR THE BROADER ECONOMY IS ... GOVERNMENT INTERFERENCE WITH COMMERCE, LABOR AND SUPPLY.
