As a teenager Mass Production’s funky up-tempo sound with a tight punchy brass section was where I was at musically. I’ve since been privileged enough to remix 3 of their best songs. Shante arrived as an import album track in late 1979 at the height of the UK jazz funk movement and when it received a UK 12” release the following year it managed to make it to 59 in our pop chart. That’s pretty impressive for a moody jazzy instrumental. Loud in a club Shante has a powerful driving intensity, shifting between different jazzy, sometimes quite eerie, sections. In this case, my remix isn’t a million miles away from the original, just a little heavier sonically whilst I tried to structure it so the solos had a bit more impact and replaced the main sax riff with a synth. Playing it my gigs, it has held its own against much better known vocal tracks.
