My Great Grandfather was in the army at the time . He participated in the round up . David Alexander Wylie . He was only 18 at the time . Currently the Southern Ute tribe is one of the wealthiest tribes in the US , due to their oil and gas wells and a Casino . I used to work for them . Great people .

I hadn't heard about this whole incident until I was well into my forties. This plays such a huge role in the the history of colorado and with what happened with the Utes after 1879. Why wad there never a movie made about this?

All because we didn't keep our promise to deliver the annuity.

Well, maybe. But often corrupt Chiefs blamed the White man for not delivering welfare items that he actually kept or sold, other times Indians broke their promises too and the consequences were that we withheld their welfare until they corrected their behavior, but popular history seems to ignore that reality. Ask any mainstream "historian" what treaties the Indians themselves violated. They would have you believe that every tribe in North America were the only perfect human group in history that never broke their word and deserved what they got in response. Does that seem realistic to you?

Often?? What treaties are you referring to?? The many treaties that the Anglo Europeans virtually forced the tribes to sign under duress, or, the ones that they tricked various sub chiefs into signing without the Big Chiefs knowledge?? You'd have to recite specific examples of Chiefs breaking white man drafted, and worded "treaties" for mainstream historians to believe your claim-----

@bc2578 Tribal leaders were as honorable as modern day politicians, with dementia. They conveniently forgot parts of an agreement they didn't like.

An acquaintance in my little Colorado town went to the Milk Creek Massacre site in 1946 and started picking up relics just lying around. Horeshoe's, buckles, cartridge cases and fired bullets. He kept them in a shadow box in his living room. Upon his death I tried to purchase these relics and give them to a museum. However, they were kept by his son and his son was supposed to donate them. Whether he did or not, I do not know.

On September 29 1879 chief Douglas and group of warriors killed meeker and seven other members of agency . This known as meeker massacre. Ute also attack Ed Thomas thornburgh and his troops heading for white river agency . In fighting thornburgh of nine of his men were killed. Meeker incident was most violent episode on Ute. White expulsion from Colorado. Newspaper across state quickly labeled its massacre, ignoring circumstances that provided revolt . In the end after meeker two separate investigations into meeker incident were held one at Los Pinos agency in 1 1879 and series of congressional hearing held following year both investigations found that army had stress passé don’t . Reservation and utes involved were not punished. Thank you for giving us chance to read learn new information and improve our English as well. Best wishes for you your dearest ones .

The Utes had huge reservation land at the time there. They were not confined and dependent on whites for food. They roamed and hunted very freely.
