So sad to see any railroad come to an end. So far the train we have up here comes through our small town in Michigan. Mainly for hauling logs and for storing cars during the winter on the rails. I’m so glad people like you take the time to videotape the last days of this train running.

Thank you for the coverage on an obscure line like this in it's death throes. To think of how New England's railroads have retrenched in the last 50 years it's getting hard to find any Industries still using rail. This line is reminiscent of some the Northwestern ran in the Fox River Valley of Wisconsin with numerous small Industries and some paper mills. Last Autumn went by an area and felt something was missing and it was one of the bigger paper mills completely leveled and now they build condos on the site including where the tracks went. Sad to see it in this condition but at least your footage preserves it for history

it is not that industry does not use railroads or any other mode of transportation, it's the fact there is no industry................thank the government and especially democrats for their tax, regulations, and myths. there is a reason industry is in China, Mexico, and other nations, low wages, taxes, and regulations. but in this nation, you pay as much as if the product was produced here. Just listened to a report regarding overtime regulations placed on farmers in Washington State. Democrats pushed through laws forcing vegetable farmers to pay overtime to workers, prior that the workers were making an above-average salary, today, that same farm worker is taking on a second job because the farms are now working through a labor pool, Democrats are the root cause of the industrial decline and inflationary costs.

Nice video, Thanks Very sad, In the 70s there were 12-15 Businesses on that part of the line and up to 30+ cars !! And the small yard at North St. had about six long tracks and always a Switcher working and as you know the Engine house tracks were at the wye (Parking lot now) and Tunnel. I grew up in East Boston & Lynn in the 1960s -70s and Railfanned the many Boston and Salem switcher moves and freights over this area (Everett, Chelsea, Lynn, Salem, Peabody, Beaverly, Danvers, Danversport, Lynnfield, Wakefield also to Ipswich, Topsfield, Newburyport & Gloucester) from 1974' to the late 1990s Started with mt late Father in the late 1960s getting an Ice Cream with him in Salem and driving to the B&M Castle Hill yard there an watch the many Switching & Freight moves for an hour or so at that very busy yard then, many industries back then into the 70s !! My Grandfather worked for the B&M from 1923' to 1958' it was a Hard job in those days my Father went into different work but we still took great interest in the RR. Later in the mid 70s my older Brother and I started Railfanning. I always Love the New England Branch lines in Towns & Cities !! I lived in Exeter, NH for the last 28 yrs now, my Apt building is right on the Tracks just 60 ft away and I moved here to see every train daily Lol. Well I'm just glad I have my B&M/Guil memories especially of the B&M GP7/9/18/38s , F units all the NW/SW types and Alco RS-3/ S-Types . It's almost all gone now, I'm 65' now 👍

How depressing. I'd say "it's a highly urban area! It should be repurposed for light rail!" but, unfortunately, the line doesn't really go anywhere. Even the abandoned section where the ROW is still mostly intact peters out in a condo park a few miles south in Lynnfield. Still, it's a shame - I never want to see any freight operation close, especially one in New England (where they are hard to come by at the best of times).

I completely understand this channel is about trains but I have a childhood memory playing around this track and the white building you were standing next to filming at. I remember saying to myself at that young age how close that building was to that track. Your video just strangely appeared on my feed and it gave me a strange feeling so I had to check it out. My aunt lived in Peabody until here death. Many memories of that area and the Salem Willows Park. What I wouldn't give for a box of peanut butter kisses from E.W. Hobbs! Sucks living in Colorado sort of. All the good food is back east.

Like so much the picture at the begining. Pure joy for model railroader. Urban location with buildings, plenty of cars and trucks on roads just above tunnel with track below surrounding ground. Track signal with "Atlas" tower with window shades at different height already in. A modeler paradise that scene but not for tofay railroading. Not enough graffitis everywhere. It would be nice to see if CSX could drum up something before the tracks get ripped up. I doubt it’d occur before Rousselot closes but they seem to be a more willing business partner with smaller industries than Pan Am was, so who knows what might happen.

Maybe, the line does continue past the plant but is overgrown and OOS. Perhaps there’s some real estate in that direction for new business.

There is some industrial development at 1st avenue/2nd street. I wouldn’t make any final claims about permanent ends of potential freight until the tracks are ripped up and the ROW is sold. We only know so much.

I was under the impression that most of the real estate along the tracks is industrial space, if not zoned for industrial. I doubt that unless one of the current abutters wants to cough up cash for rail service it’d go anywhere, but who knows if others might show up at some point. Not us, that’s for sure.
@hahayesmanfunny

@@djldrumsKeep it active? Certainly no reason to keep it running after Rousselot closes. Keep it in place? That I find more likely. No obligation to run down the line but no full reason to abscond of it. I think railroads like St. Lawrence and Altantic with the southern end of their Berlin Sub had a similar approach.
@BoringIntrovert1982

CSX will have a chubby while ripping up the tracks. It's been their favorite pastime since the SCL days. Many ACL branches were abandoned or sold in segments from the 70's-early 80's, they abandoned huge sections of the S Line in the mid 80's, and sold off the Tallahassee Sub in 2019. Plus, with PSR, they've shuttered operations at many yards. Some abandoned, and sold outright. These smaller branch lines don't fit in with their PSR b.s. Realistically, if it wasn't for Amtrak Silver Star, CSX would surely either abandon or sell the S Line (Hamlet Sub) from Hamlet, NC to Cayce, SC.

There is rail growth resurgence happening. But there is more pressure on the small businesses as railroads seek to get more train to fewer destinations. Actually, they are an issue. There's even worse out there. A lot of track in the USA is in poor shape. More likely to lead to derailments, track failures and reduce efficiency. hence, the loco has to go even slower. Look at Euro and Asian rail tracks, and they're very straight. We don't have high-speed rail. We don't have good service for cargo and passengers. USA has the most dangerous rail in the world. For the trains themselves, passengers and road accidents. 24m55s is a good spot to show how wonky that track is. Again, there's YT vids with tracks far far worse. I still love trains thou. And good footage on this video.

Doing some advocacy a few years back, I caught the ear of some MPO members, and the "T" actually held a public reach out about creating a branch operation to Rt. 128 to establish a park and ride. It was quite a positive reception (in Peabody at least) compared to the usual NIMBY fusillades I have witnessed. The GM actually used my term "interceptor" at some of the public forums. So guys, get out from behind your telephoto cameras, and show up at meetings. Three letters to a state legislator is a big thing. This cycle commuter considers trail conversion a failure of public policy, given these lines were acquired by the Commonwealth to expand rail transit in the wake of the I95 cancellation.

@douglasskaalrud6865
@douglasskaalrud6865 Жыл бұрын
@@eringardner4962. Railroads maintain track to profitably meet the service requirements of the customers. Looking at the consist of the manifest train, it’s all bulk material which generally is not time sensitive so minimal maintenance is all that is needed to maintain a dependable service that is acceptable to the customer. The capacity of the cars means the track will handle 100 tons; why would a railroad spend maintenance money on a branch line for one customer if it would mean operating it at a loss? You do remember that railroads are in business to make a profit, don’t you? Railfans need to wake up and look at the business so they can get a better picture of why things happen the way they do on a railroad.

I love this American approach to rolling heavy trains through the middle of the city on the main streets. It looks cool how these iron mountains glide majestically between cars. In Europe, at the thought of bringing trains and cars closer together, all officials would piss their pants and a few would have heart attacks.
