It's always a good thing to see a complete wrecker get back to glory. I have a huge respect for people that can do that, because I know it's not an easy thing to do, and a lot of time and money goes into doing so. And it's always nice to see it being done in a world where we buy new and throw away the old nearly every single day.

Restore it! That poor tractor has suffered at the hands of so many owners/drivers, it needs to be shown some compassion in its later years. - You didn't see the "bag o' shite" DB 885 we hauled out of York Auction Centre about 20 years ago. It had more going wrong than going right. Even on the day, some guy wanted us to sell him the crank shaft. Anyway, cutting a long story short, we brought it home, pressure washed the years of cow dung off it (it had been used as a scraper tractor) - it was not pretty, and looked worse than Fud's Massey. We had all sorts of welded up bodges, buggered front axle, steering that wouldn't steer, no reverse unless you put your foot against the stick and pushed hard, PTO with smashed gears, no brakes and. . . . Well, you get the idea, but bit by bit we did little bits hither and thither, and big bits in the middle of the yard! In the end, that poor old 885 has proven itself to be a good and reliable tractor with a heart of gold. Like a faithful old sheepdog, it will get you anywhere, and do anything it was designed to, and get the flock back home again. Some of the unlikeliest heaps turn out to be some of the most trustworthy assets, given a bit of TLC. Our 885 is still in its moth eaten (cow crap rotted) tinwork (with very little reparation). One day maybe, but it stands as I remember it when my dad was still alive and looked at it and wondered what the hell we'd dragged back to our yard. Go on, give old Fud a hand to make that Massey go again. Show it you love it, and it will love you back!

It will cost you more than it is worth to restore so from an economic side break it. I’m speaking from experience, I bought a 165 in similar condition and restored it. Alternative fuels, if you can light it with a lighter or a match then a petrol engine will run on it to some degree. I've never tried running an engine on white spirits, but I've never managed to set light to white spirits with a lighter, they seem to need a bit of pre-heating or some Bill Cosby gas. That Massey 175 is in more the kind of condition I'm familiar with. Welding some round bar above and below the lifting hole in the arms is reasonably common although I've never seen it done with SS threaded bar before. I'm surprised that welds taken as well as it has. I've seen steering arms welded on before, I guess they'd previously been run slack and then couldn't be tightened properly. I've also seen a stub axle bent back before. Tractor in question had recently been converted to a 6 cylinder using a lorry engine, we hadn't realised that they'd upper the rev limiter during its time as a lorry. Anyway a junction was taken a bit to fast, the tractor ran wide and the wheel dug into the verge, it stopped the tractor pretty quickly and it rolled over. To give you some indication of the engine revs, a Nuffield 465 would do 20 mph at 2200rpm, the car behind said they'd followed the tractor at 38 on the level.

If you wanted to make a realistic tractor restoration documentary, this175 would be great as it appears to have pretty much every issue in one tractor that I've experienced across 20-30 tractor's. If it was my tractor I'd probably just get it running on an all expenses/effort spared basis and eek a bit more life out of it. Fibre optic bore scopes are really handy if you haven't already got one, you might be lucky that the engines just gummed up through standing. Something I'd quite like to try is hooking up an injection pressure tester to an injector to free a sized engine. Normal combustion pressures are about 1000 psi, 175 bar is about 2500 psi, so I wouldn't stray to far over 1000psi unless your willing to risk twisting the crank. I've previously had good experiences with using hot water in the engine and a block of ice on the piston. That engine had been left on its side and sunk into some mud next to a spring for about 20 years. It had stalactites and stalagmites in the cylinder bores. Surprisingly the crank and rods did see service again in another engine, the bores were to corroded, it would have needed about a 100 thou rebore to clean up.

I’d like to see the internals of her, just to see if it’s even worth restoring, then take it from there. Apart from ether, lighter aerosol is the only thing that’s helped me assist a cold start on a diesel, and it wasn’t perfect. Lynx, and all that type of stuff just smells nice.
