We used Massey balers the entire time I Iived at home on the farm. Had a #12 for a long time, bought a #124 with a belt thrower when we went to thrower racks, baling 10,000-15,000 bales a year. Nice to see that the Masseys STILL don't miss bales very often. We had the same 2 or 3 a year missed, tops. And almost always because someone didn't take an extra 10 seconds to make the connecting knot nice and clean. The Massey knotter has been legendary for not missing for many years. I used John Deere balers on other farms I worked for, and their miss rate was a lot higher I found.

I bought a john Deere 348 square baler new two years ago but I wanted the massey at the time it was a three month wait and my new Holland crapped out on me so I went with the JD. Like you said sometimes fight the bananas but mostly can adjust them out. I find it interesting how your issue in not enough rain while almost always we fight too much. NH always seemed to have some issue with banana bales but hay type makes a difference. No problem in fescue, some problem in Bermuda. Real problem in finer varieties of Bermuda. My antique 270 NH breaks a bale about once every 300 bales. My JD 348 was horrible, old too but broke lots of bales and seemed constantly getting out of time or not tying. An in line would be my choice too for new.

I don't know the hay business but I suspect growing, cutting, raking and baling works out best after you develop a relationship with the equipment to where you know what to expect and then how to react to what you did not expect. I enjoyed your talk.

It's keeps bacteria from growing in the hay until it dries enough not to mold, its undetectable to a human if the bales cure a month or so. The product has a very strong vinegar type smell that will wake a dead man.

From what I've seen those bale bandits are garbage. My neighbor has one and they've used it for probably 5 years and they always have more busted packs than packs that are tied together. Funny thing is I just drove by their place today and it's parked by the road with a for sale sign. I'm glad they finally realized it's more of a headache than what it's worth. As for the new holland balers I'm very surprised to hear you had so many problems with them. I have a 575 and that thing eats 4' wide rows that are 3' tall going 2.5mph I've never had any problems. I like the ease of use on inline balers but would have a hard time getting rid of my 575. And a matter of fact I know three other ranches that have multiple 575's and 5070's to get all there hay bales and some bale 20,000+ little bales a year. But I do know when you get a lemon no matter what it is it's hard to go back to that brand.
