@raywhitehead730 that's because missiles and (to-be) directed energy weapons are used for aircraft platforms. CWIS forms part of the most inner defence in close proximity to the ship of a few kilometers, as opposed to the stand off range the fleet air defence missiles offer up to a hundred miles +.
@raywhitehead7304 ай бұрын
Retired USN officer, with combat time and Seven years at sea. PhD, electronics. The US both the Navy and Air Force have pretty much given up on directed energy weapons. They spent Billions trying to make it work and over a 30 year span. The Navy built the Zimwalt class destroyer hoping to put lasers on it. It has a ton of electricity generation ability. And the rail gun didn't work out. Now they are putting cruise missiles on them. The CIWS, is not a good weapon for defense against fast cruise missiles. And it has a poor, real world at war record.

Planes will be stationed/dispersed at RAF bases to reduce the chances of multiple critical assets being sunk and destroyed whilst the ship is supposed to be in safe waters. When the carrier departs, the aircraft will join it at sea.
@drscopeify4 ай бұрын
@@discipleaj It's not becasue of risk of being destroyed at all it has to do with the draft or weight of the carrier and the depth of the waterways and home port. The carrier will sit too low in the water and risk making contact. Also the fighter jets need to return to base for training and easier maintenance.

I would classify the two carriers they already have as “temporary on station naval surface/aviation assets.” They are not true long range, blue water, naval assets. They do not have nuclear power and power autonomy. The United States switched to all nuclear power with the Nimitz class carriers because of autonomy of power generation during all operations. They did not need 5,000,000 gallons of fossil fuel for primary propulsion. That saved a lot of space for aviation fuel, more aircraft, weapons storage, crew accommodations, workshops, etc. Nuclear power is the closest thing to renewable energy. Filling up a Kitty Hawk class carrier with 5,000,000 gallons of fossil fuel was quite a headache. Nothing like having unlimited power at see. They can even air condition the hanger bays down below with so much power to spare!
@HowM7713 ай бұрын
Fossil fuel was used because the UK doesn't have a Reactor dump site big enough for a carrier of that magnitude, also it's just cheaper in the long run

What have these vessels got two towers - second one a mobile mosque? what a waste of deck space, carriers are meant for planes not bums in the air.
@Benjd04 ай бұрын
They take up no more space than needed, most conventionally powered aircraft carriers just have one long island. The two main gas turbines are placed directly below the islands so their exhausts/intakes can go directly up, taking up as little space as possible. The older class these replaced had a lot of space taken up in the hangar because their engines had to be directly connected to the prop shafts, and gas turbines require fairly large ducting. Since this uses an electric propulsion system they can place the engines wherever needed. Splitting them gives additional survivability and also allows navigation and flyco to be better positioned for their respective roles, if one is damaged then the other can perform both roles if needed.
