During an interview (CHAT) between Elon Musk and former president Donald Trump on the social media platform (X), which netted (pardon the pun) just over 1 billion views, was hit with a massive cyberattack. A DDOS attack to be specific which caused the start of the LIVE CHAT to be pushed back 30-40 minutes to all for Musk's cyber security team to mitigate the hackers attack. Today we discuss what happened, was it preventable, and finally look at some real world white-hat security tools which could be used behind the scenes during such DDOS attacks. Someone once said (Patrick Henry???) "I may not agree with WHAT you say but I'll defend to the death your right to say it." We seem to have gotten away from that belief and that is why we are so divisive as a society. Too bad we never learn and have such short memories.

The DDOS claim was an excuse for a poor turnout.Not many want to listen to a weird sociopath and indicted felon.
@PWingert19662 ай бұрын
@@Grant_S_M Also if there was a large turnout there servers were likely overwhelmed. No actual attack took place most likely. Core routers have tattle tails to clamp traffic when DDOS is detected and clamps the feeds. Don't forget the human panick response of repeatedly hitting refresh generating 20 or thirty requests each multiply my 200,000 and it looks like a DDOS attack.

All the coders that got fired from Twitter, also knew what was in there and probably where the cracks might have been. There is also a very good chance X is not as robust as it needs to be to handle 30 plus million people in the space all at once. At least not quite yet. If I'm not mistaken, the Tucker/Trump interview overwhelmed X as well. But all the information you scanned over was amazing. The complexity is fascinating. Also, it let me know how disconnected I am from my old messing around days in the '90s. It kinda made my brain hurt💊🧠 But "dammit J I'm a firefighter not a computer coder". 😂 👍

Don't forget that an attack can also cost a lot extra on bandwidth, as bandwidth is usually sold in 95 percentile, so that means you pay for the lowest speed in the highest 1.5 days. 95 percentile 10Mb/s means: You pay for 10Mb/s as long as you don't exceed that 10Mb/s for more than 1.5 days. Above that you pay a steep price (like $25 per Mb/s). If your link is 100Mb/s and the DDOS manages to fill that for 1.5 days you have to pay 90*$25=$2250 on top of your normal price. This is a real life example. It depends on your ISP if you have to pay $2250 or if they warn you in time.

I see these malicious attacks in the same light as malicious or spam email, and many will not necessarily like my solution: Implement premium connections, and premium email. In other words, make the sender pay for their network usage. It won't solve every problem, but the reason DDOS and spam happens is because it's free to the sender. As an analog, we don't get too much spam in postal mail because the sender pays the stamp. I know the internet protocols were all about freedom, connectivity and popsicles, but that's all over now...

@aftardog2 ай бұрын
Tested for 8m users but had 23M. No reports of problems with other aspects of Twitter. My best guesses as to actual cause in order of likelihood: Under provisioned or misconfigured some service or component not identified as bottleneck in testing Disabled some DDOS protections to do testing and did not reset to needed production settings Edge case DDOS vulnerability not previously identified Establishing functionality in relatively short time period points to something Twitter had control over and should have been configured to handle. New/novel attacks are usually not quashed so quickly.

The easiest way to explain a ddos attack in my opinion is using customer service. When someone calls customer service, a company or the government you get the 'your call is important to us please hold' which is a denial of service. The department you are trying to connect to will have x employees but if x + 1 people try to call in then the + 1 person gets denied service. it's distributed because many people from all over the country are calling in. It's simple and people can understand the example, even though it may not be 100% 1 to 1 example.

Wow this is bad info. I've worked as a network engineer and for ISPs. This guy either doesn't really know his stuff or he is very bad at explaining. Because some of the stuff he says is just wrong and others would either be irrelevant or very different than described under a DDOS attack. For example netstat and tcpdump are not useful manually because you would have yhousands or tens of thousands of simultaneous connections that would be changing every few seconds. No way a human could analyze that in real time, you'd need specialized tools that injest and analyze that data rapidly. Also, if the bot net is being controlled from India, you're never going to see that from the target! The control will talk only to the bots, the bots will flood the target with requests. There will be no traffic from the control to the target.
@jcristina3 ай бұрын
Obviously people watching would not have AI based software specialized software. I was trying to make it easier for the layman to understand the “just” behind what is going on. Parsing data through awk real-time is possible but it will only show top level information of course. Maybe you would like to dig into Arbor, Radware or maybe Kona for the folks. Let it rip my friend. I’m always open to learn.
@Me__Myself__and__I2 ай бұрын
@@jcristina I appreciate your willingness to discuss. My suggestion going forward would be if you're knowingly simplifying something then at least mention that. Say something like "this won't scale up for larger sites but is a starting point for smaller sites." The way your video came off was very authoritative and made it sound like this is how the pros do things for big sites. FYI I've used those commands, even with AWK, on smaller servers at an ISP. Even with a relatively small number (hundreds) of concurrent users the volume of data was difficult to sift through in real-time. I haven't done network engineering full time for awhile now so I'm not up on what the current tools are. If you know of open source or reasonably cheap tools I'd suggest mentioning them in your videos. Even if you're simplifying things for your typical viewers, drop some breadcrumbs so people who need more have a path for additional research. This was the only video of yours I've ever seen and I think my main issue was just how authoritative and "correct" you came off in your presentation while glossing over or grossly simplifying some things.
