Yes, she's got a beautiful voice, don't know how recent this is but never heard it before till now. I love her voice in Help yourself, from a group called Death in Vegas, don't know if anybody's heard of them, the albums called Scorpio Rising from 2002.

CherryEM Yea, they both are amazing vocalists. I listen to Mazzy Star religiously. I discovered them a few years ago, so that's the catalyst for my love of Hope. First my brother introduced me to M.A. after the first Matrix movie ( remember "Dissolved Girl"?) - I was just a kid at that time and from there on out every single M.A. song I loved. There wasn't and still isn't one song by them I don't like.
@Starzagal

+Gabriel McCarthy yes yes yes Dissolved Girl is definitely one of my favourite tracks by them; I was personally introduced to MA about three years ago by my dad, in 1992 he went on tour with them to play a gig on Italian TV promoting Blue Lines and when he heard me listening to other trip hop like Bjork he told me to give Mezzanine a try
@n1c98
@n1c98 7 жыл бұрын
+CherryEM That's cool your first introduction to the band was the Mezzanine album too. I love me some Bjork. I was just thinking to myself how much Hope's lyrics here remind me of something Bjork would write. Blue Line's incredible chill rap feel - such an inimitable vibe - "blue lines", and "five nation army". My bro and I would jam to em as kids. All of blue lines is gold. I still haven't checked out their rap music when they were a different name before MA did indeed become Massive Attack. Haven't even checked to see if it's available online. You can hear how chill their hip hop was and how the perfection of this debute studio album burgeoned into their trip hop eminence and sprechgesang .

Your words have touched me so deeply. You put words to something so personal and intangible. I am so emotional over this right now! I once fell so deeply in love with someone, and when our relationship ended, I felt this song with all the pain in my soul. Years have passed, and now that I keep listening to this song, I feel like I understand it better every day. I will always love that part of the person that I once fell in love with even though it no longer exists, people change and it's okay. Every day I don't know you more but still I thank life that one day we were the most passionate and connected lovers in our youth. Edit: I realized that I had fallen in love with a psychopath who hurt me a lot, almost to death, luckily I was able to get out of there and I am healing now. Be very careful of the predators of society, they abound a lot and there are many who know how to use their masks perfectly to deceive us. Indeed I was in love with a lie, an illusion. It made no sense to feel such deep and incomprehensible pain. In the end I learned that I do know how to love. And I am learning to love myself again now.

Life is such a crazy roller coaster... Spent most of my 20s all alone totally miserable, then got my first girlfriend at 27 and after one years and a half, she broke up with me because of too many flaws in our couple... And for the first time in my life I get to feel what is sorrow, grief, loss, etc... Coming from a very hardened, stone-cold character developed over the years, now I feel like the most vulnerable thing emotionally. That's crazy. But you know what ? I also enjoy it, made me understand what deep love is and how beautiful it is. And know I understand how people could move mountains to get their lover back. That's beautiful.
@MaitreSpader
@MaitreSpader 9 ай бұрын
Well, almost 2 years after that comment. Time heals. And it heals wounds relatively quickly. I am totally healed from that breakup but now I am striaght back into my default mode, plus all the spiritual awareness acquired during the high pain phase. But still, It's not enough, if you think a deep breakup will change you, you might be wrong. What I've found in the meantime is that change is trully done within your own core self. Of course you'll NEED traumatic events of some sorts but you'll change only from within yourself. If you are that kind of person like me (I believe) that needs way more than just a "breakup" to change you, then be prepared. The feelings and awareness you felt after the breakup it just the FIRST STEP. Then you might be in NEED of a system. 1) : support 2) accountability. That's coming from a long-life loner. You will NEVER be able to change unless you have people/groups supporting you and making you accountable during your change. If you stay alone and within the realm of your ego, you will simply recreate similare experiences. Indeed, the absolute BIGGEST thing I've learn personnally, is that you need a system to hold you acountable for your change and also somekind of support. Trying to overthink life by yourself is INSANE. And insanity will bring you only pure negativity. All I have learned during that post breakup phase is that love, hapiness, and all the good stuff are created within YOU first. You do not need anybody or anything to be happy. But to reach this place, you need to LET GO and GET HELPED with competent people.

My own interpretation: the video represents how we slowly lose our identity after we've been hurt/forsaken by someone we love. Many of us create an outer wall to protect ourselves, and look like we've turned into a stone without any feelings.
@ndjjr4794
@ndjjr4794 7 жыл бұрын
Man maybe is this but in other way: the "Cate Blanchett" seems to have depersonalized herself in favor of the loved one. Anyway there are certainly less songs chanting us the ENDING of love than those millions of silly songs about the COMING of love, right? This is a case of a depressed woman ending of love... Did this long review, if you will, thks! A new generation of video makers has been feeding us with the most astounding cleeky concepts. So much so you cannot separate visual from track, don't want to. It would be like tasting food with your eyes closed. It's a whole. A bright confident woman's face live and skin tender is engulfed in shadows and will keep drowning into the dark abyss. It's not a human face actually. Is a model copy head of the live original. It's empty. Lifeless. Disconnected. Locked inside our screen glass. Decomposing in so many possible ways. In just a second the visual symptoms of deep psychiatric depression set all over in. And even so it will keep trying to make eye contact, haunting someone said here, the deep velour bass drum beats like a failing dying heart and higher tones drifting deeper and deeper into muteness. The slow and cruel dissolution experiments with what would be like comings and goings. An archaeological reconstruction from facial bones gets stuck middle way. A digital rendering shows failures, or an empty casket. A Pluto surface texture from a low-def probe turns into a moon and then meteorite surface. It will be an ancient statue corroded by thousand years of acid rain. Or maybe a million decades on from here. Roman and Greek statues being a faint attempt to eternize people and concepts we love unchanged. It's a stalagmite. We would lovingly embrace it in it's helpless coldness. It seems pretty random, but actually underline each verse with brain surgery precision, an excellent example of rhythm in film editing. And a warning of why we should never dissipate our souls in favor of the other, a true loving relationship should be balanced and self nurturing and ever renewing not stagnant. Finally, the entity using Hope Sandoval's voice could be a virtual intelligence behind a custom relationship motor, those ones in every damn Netflix everywhere now, that will slowly come to know you by applying statistics on a database formed by collecting your clicking habits over the years and then getting so completely into your consumption habits and preferences that will actually try to simulate a sort of love by just offering the things you like most, in a total failed way to fidelize you because it will insist in keeping you more and more like that, away from everything else. This is ultimately boring. And that's when the other one got so totally depersonalized and undervalued in the relation, you will cut out the ties and proceed to more interesting exchanges. So Google don't ever never love me like this, ok? Database selling will turn us all into stalagmites sitting in front of our notebooks.

The song is called "The Spoils", which comes from the phrase "To the victor go the spoils". The speaker in the song is in love with a person who is in involved with another woman. This other woman is the victor; to her go the spoils. The person they both love is "the spoils". Out of pure love and a desire for her love's happiness, she lets him/her go. The speaker is dealing with the pain of that loss and the infinite emotional distance there must be between herself and the person she loves; and across that distance, over time, the painful image of the person she loves ossifies, fades; but she's still holding on to him/her. That hopeless love -- it never leaves her.

I do not believe they have ever said that they took the title from that phrase.
@Owega
@Owega 6 жыл бұрын
Never said they did. It's an interpretation. Nevertheless, they probably did title the song as "The Spoils" knowing that the phrase "to the victor go the spoils" is a popular phrase (in fact, the only real context in which anyone ever says "the spoils"), and that the title would evoke this phrase in the audience's mind.
@user-gf3wn1ne9n
@user-gf3wn1ne9n 6 жыл бұрын
Well in your original comment, you specifically say "the speaker in the song is..." which is you saying the song is about something rather than clarifying it's your own interpretation. And while yes it's possible they took the title "The Spoils" from that phrase, you are making an assumption again but originally phrased it as fact.

In my view, this a women who lost the only one she ever loved. She loved him so much that’s she not angry. She wants him to be happy. She waits. And her love is so strong that it transcends time. She waits. She dies, and still her love, waits. A very powerful message. Nice job Massive Attack!

This song reminds me of how our minds work. How when someone who we deeply love dies and our memories are still fresh in our heads. I think this video truly represents memory loss/Alzheimer. Thank you for this.

Love Hope's voice. This song is deep, resonates. I'm spiritually awake, so I get it. There are some journeys that we take, that we realize were just a temporary illusion that we had. Yet we want to hold onto a part of It, of who we were when we were with a person. Even though it was mostly an illusion. There were voids that needed to be filled, that we only realized, once we met them. We realized it was not going to last. So we let them go. But a part of them stays with you. The love, once you give it away, cannot ever be taken back. Sometimes, you still love them, but in silence. And you want them to go, stay away. It's the only way you can love them. All of this, Imho. Love, is the most beautiful feeling in the world. Even when it is felt in silence. From afar. Love, is still love. ~ Love, light and peace. ❤

We often love an idea or a faint image. The vaguest impression. It takes courage to love a real flesh and blood human being. As we love more in reality, we add flesh and bone to the image.
