This reimagining by MMM&C comes from the desire of appreciating Mezzanine, Massive Attack's masterpiece, in a new form. It basically takes this album that some of us know inside and out and puts it in some kind of what-could-have-been scenario. What if the band didn't have much reggae/dub influences, leaning instead into different vocals and heavier sounds? Or what if this remix was actually the album mix? What if this lawsuit came long before the album was released? Or what if these demos and discarded tracks had made the cut? Track information: *Track 01 | Angel x Slow | 05m19s | 2004* This mashup was created by Scott Akister (aka Smash) in January of 2004 and features Kylie Minogue's vocals from her song "Slow" in replacement of Horace Andy on the original track. His version was slightly edited further by yours truly for the purpose of this reimagining. *Track 02 | Risingson (Otherside Mix) | 05m28s | 1997* This track was featured on all "Risingson" Single releases alongside the album version of the track and various other remixes. This heavier alternate version is by Massive Attack itself, leaning hard on abrasive guitars and drum beats. It is often confused with the "Meyanderthal Mix", which doesn't seem to exist anymore other than on two rare 1997 promo vinyls. *Track 03 | Euro Zero Zero | 04m23s | 1996* This track was the official B-side of "Teadrop" and was featured on the single releases alongside the album version of the track and various other remixes. It was originally an alternative version of the song "Eurochild" that appeared on the album "Protection", but it was never recorded properly and in that incarnation before 1996. At that time called "Eurochild Ninety 6", it appeared on a promotional compilation for the European FIFA cup of that year, but became part of the official Massive Attack discography under the name "Euro Zero Zero" in the era of "Mezzanine". *Track 04 | Inertia Creeps (State Of Bengal Mix) | 06m25s | 1997* This track was featured on all "Inertia Creeps" Single releases alongside the album version of the track and various other remixes. Done by DJ and producer Sam Zaman (or his stage name: State Of Bengal), it emphasizes even further the middle eastern sound of the original and even adds a noticeable focus on flute to the Turkish influences that Robert Del Naja had carried back from Istanbul. Zaman passed away in 2015, but his music lives on. *Track 05 | Exchange | 02m19s | 1998/2001* This version of the song was featured in the 2001 documentary "Dogtown and Z Boys", thought it is not included in the soundtrack or retail OST in any capacity. This version differs lightly from its album conterpart, yet feels more mellow and laid back. The somewhat ethereal synth that were introduced serve as a perfect break between the now more intense "Inertia Creeps" and "Endtrack". *Track 06 | Endtrack | 03m54s | 1997* This is an early demo version of "Dissolved Girl" which has significantly different arrangements than its album counterpart. It features the same lyrics and vocals from Sara Jay as the release track - they are from a different take, however. It was featured during the end credits sequence of the film "The Jackal", starring Bruce Willis and Richard Gere. *Track 07 | Reflection | 04m52s | 1998* Touring the album Mezzanine proved to be quite inspiring, which lead 3D, Neil Davidge (producer on the album) and John Harris (lead singer of the band "Sunna" and bass player on the recording sessions) to come up with one last song that would be a sort of sister track for "Inertia Creeps". The song joined the setlist for many of the Mezzanine tour dates in 1998, but rarely - if at all - since. It replaces the reggae cover of The Paragons' 1968 track "Man Next Door" in this reimagining. *Track 08 | Black Melt | 05m12s | 1998-2006* This noir revision of Black Milk followed a lawsuit by Manfred Man over the sampling of his 1972 track "Tribute". The whole debacle forced Massive Attack to revisit their song for subsequent use and famously turned them away from using samples on their next album "100th Window". Black Melt was featured exclusively on the special edition of "Collected", their Best-Of album. The song usually features an odd sound gap of nearly 1 second towards the end that is supposedly 100% intentional by the band, but this reimagining got rid of it for your pleasure. *Track 09 | Mezzanine | 06m02s | 2010* This version was recorded in Los Angeles for the KCRW Radio program "Live In Studio Session" while promoting the band's 2010 album "Heligoland". The recording session was made at EastWest Studio on February 10, 2010 and was broadcasted a few months later on August 6. The track retains the core qualities of its 1998 counterpart while showcasing some new nuances that attest of the band's growth and maturity since the end of the millennium. Once again, a heavier sound reminiscent of the live performances is present which made it a clear choice for an inclusion on this reimagined album. *Track 10 | Group Four | 09m42s | 1998* This live rendition of Group Four owes its sound quality to the source being a direct soundboard recording of Massive Attack's performance at the Ancienne Belgique venue, in Brussells, on November 27th 1998. The event was immortalized and shared with the help of a bootleg double-disk CD-format release. This version features the usual balls-to-the-wall ending that this song is known for when performed live as well as angelic singing from Deborah Miller, a long time collaborator of the band. A heavy, dissonant, and quite fitting ending to this reimagined album also removes the need for a repeat of "Exchange".
