The great thing about Joy Division and Ian Curtis is the fact that for the first time in history somebody put his total being in his music and words. This band only knowing a few accords with an amazing drummer and base player will never disappear , they are like the Mozart or Beethoven in modern pop music. New order was great but never had the same credibility .
@MOLLETHERVE7 ай бұрын
It was the beginning of the 80's, the young people were either Disco or Hard Rock, neither of them appealed to me... And Joy Division came along and started the New WAVE movement...A blessing... Waiting for The Cure, Simple Minds and New Order! What a thrill to listen to all this again.
@griffowolfhackmine3 ай бұрын
sorry but joy division did not 'start the new wave movement', that name was the creation of the uk music press around 1978. joy division were formed in 1976 (first called 'warsaw' but became joy division in 1978) ian curtis killed himself in may 1980 and joy division were no more. new order was formed by the remaining joy division members plus gillian gilbert. the cure formed in 1978, simple minds in '77. not sure where you are from but i dont think it is the uk!
@Beelzebubbbbles3 ай бұрын
Love Joy Division, but their final album was released in '80, and they didn't start the 'New Wave' movement, or post-punk. They were one of many bands that left punk behind for a more experimental approach to making music. Banshees were before them, PIL had three albums under their belt by '80, The Police were huge, and there were a host of other bands. Where Joy Division stand out is in their permanence. What Martin Hannett did to their sound in the studio has ensured they remain relevant, that and the lyrics by Curtis and his own terrible story which make the lyrics even deeper. The Cure had recorded two albums before Joy Division, Simple Minds had recorded two.
@williamforsyth-ye4rc2 ай бұрын
Was that in the US? 'cause in the UK there was Northern Soul, Punk, Two-tone/Mod, Skin/Reggae, as well as Hard Rock and Disco........this "New Wave" you allude to, evolved directly from the musical hearts and minds of fans/proponents of all of these........ only in cultural deserts/wastelands were there only two genres of music......
@williamforsyth-ye4rc2 ай бұрын
There was no "New Wave" movement! There was a natural progression of musicians who realised Punk was a a very narrow genre, and then took inspiration from the many other genres of music around, and preceding Punk

It is their "feeling too much" that allows them to write such amazing music and also causes their deep depression, because there's not a damn thing can be done with all the things that make us feel too much and therein lies the crux of our depression.
@TeachingSexualEthics3 ай бұрын
I love those singers who you mention but artists, musicians and writers have always rationalized their drugging and drinking as "necessary" to make great art. This is wrong and masks self destructive behavior and teaches younger people that inebriation is crucial to creativity. As if junkies are braver. I have empathy for all but say the opposite. I suggest listening The Gun Club. Especially the early work, with 1982's Miami being an absolute masterpiece. The punk spirit and passion for Blues let singer and mastermind JLP express his emotions in a more cynical way, witth exceptional ability both as lyricist and vocalist. The late work is full of melancholy though. Superb guitar play, but that makes it even more intense (for me at least).

And another thing, this man genuinely believed that his singing was garbage, and that American audiences as well as simply future English audiences would lambast him into ridicule, it's considered one of the major reasons he took his life (along with his impending divorce). But it speaks a valuable lesson about mental illness and neurosis that he thought something so false so genuinely. and that the very fact we are listening now disproves his self doubts. I sometimes dream of a timeline were he would have lived to sing Age of Consent or Blue Monday.

Saw New Order at Heaton Park last weekend and have to say the encore with Transmission and Love will tear us apart sent shivers up my spine... Truly a great band, and so underrated after the tragic loss of Ian. All of them are/were amazing musicians.

Are they the same without Hooky?

I dont think New Order is underrated at all, they achieved a huge (deserved!) success in 80´-90´ and influenced so many bands.

How are they underrated? Great band, but if anything they are becoming overrated nowadays partly due to their short career and Ian's mythical status?

Great music , takes me back to a time when everything were new and fresh , now manufactured junk .

4 years ago when i was 13, i figured that i have been born in the wrong gneeration, there was so much more back then, everything was real and true.
@stevebrodie77774 жыл бұрын
@@karlwiebrecht3803 maybe but there are still good indie bands out there now , unfortunately over looked by commercial radio and TV who want you to love their music as they make a fortune from it . Not the performers who sign their lives away to water tight contracts , such a shame .
@karlwiebrecht38034 жыл бұрын
It all sounds the same, and i agree, it is ashame that i dont like other bands that dont get to be a big hit on mainstream media etc, because alot of them are just boring to me. Whilst i have not been alive longer than alot of people on this earth, i still think that my parents have raised me listening to all sorts of music, and when i hear anything from around now, i think "that sounds like this, or it sounds like that song". Thanks for opening my mind however :)

steve brodie, In 1979 it was manufactured junk too, ask the British, they are specialists in burying legends by not buying their records and lifting junk in the charts.

One of those few bands who can inspire multiple generations; of musicians at least to the point where wearing t-shirts with their album cover is instantly recognizable.
