When I was a little girl, I loved laundry day with my aunt. She hung all her bed linens on the clothesline and then ironed them using a flat iron and water sprinkled from a purpose-made tumbler with a perforated lid (my job as a preschooler was to hand her the clothespins and do the sprinkling). Those sheets smelled like summer and felt like Heaven. ☁️

As a child, I was so particular about my sheets I refused sleep on ones that were too bright, but literally wore out a set of soft blue and white flowers. Today, at 60 years old, I have a set of white ones that go in the wash and right back on the bed every week!

My grandmother only used flat sheets. Every week, the top sheet became the bottom sheet and a fresh sheet was used for the top. One reason was economy. She used a 2 tub washer and hung her laundry to dry...another way to get a crisp sheet. Her washing station was in a detached garage so, yes, she was saving some work. And, the sheets got pressed. I can still remember sleep overs at her house. The smell and feel of the sheets was amazing.

All your videos are terrific. We have a great double door entry to our bedroom. And when we chose this home for retirement, we knew we wanted one story living. The good news is that should we ever have mobility issues it will be easy to maneuver and see from the bedroom to the open living/kitchen/dining room. The bad news is that as soon as anyone enters the house, the bed is on view. Even though we don't need a comforter in Florida, I chose a big, puffy ruched comforter because it hides a lot of sins when the bed is made. It's a nuisance to remove it every night though. I do have a few beautiful William-Sonoma duvet covers and shams in my linen closet if I ever want to keep up with ironing, though. Maybe I'll try the dry-cleaning route! Great pro tip. Dry cleaners everywhere will be wondering why they are getting calls about their presses!

Lisa you're so awesome. Can I give you and your viewers a tip. Please invest in a good moisture resistant with a cotton top mattress cover! Protect that mattress investment. Also, if you've ever slept on 600 to 800 thread count sheets; you'll never go back to anything less. Everything else will feel like burlap. Will you pay upfront for them? Yes. Will they last longer? Yes. I don't think you'll regret it. Sidenote, I love my contour pillow. It's my " sleep" pillow and it's in a satin case ( so your face doesn't crease!) ~ Luisa

Lovely! Great ideas! I have one challenge though. You make the bed in the morning with all those extra pillows, quilts and what have you. It looks gorgeous and you close the bedroom door and go about your day. In the evening, you come back, it still looks lovely, and you take all the extras away and put them…. On the floor? On a chest of drawers? It is a mess, at least in my room 😳. Unfortunately, I don’t have the space for a chest/bench at the foot end so I need something else. It would be great to get some different nice-looking solutions to this, please.

Hi Lisa, thanks again for a wonderful video! All these beds are lovely, and your video today is timely, because I have the beds in my master and two more bedrooms of our new house that need toppers. But it seems to me that all beds being showcased these days are, in fact, not made up! As lovely as many of these sheet sets are, I don’t want them to be part of my decor. I also can’t imagine the time spent and aggravation endured from having to tuck in all those flat sheets and blankets every day! And as my husband pointed out, how are the cats supposed to burrow in under the covers for their daily naps? I assume we’re supposed to be chanelling “luxury hotel”, but some of the best I’ve stayed in have formal bedspreads and maids who perform turn-down service. Maybe I’m just old (fashioned), but, to me, a properly dressed bed has a cover that hides the sheets and blanket. A duvet or quilt can be folded at the bottom of the bed, and the pillows, in their cases, would be covered with shams. I also note the absence of bed skirts. How does one hide the box spring - is the topper, whatever it might be, supposed to be wide enough to hide the matress and box spring? How does that work if the topper and sheets are turned back? All the fluffy covers look wonderful - until the down sinks to the bottom, or clings to the baffle stitching, and the whole thing becomes lumpy and messy. I have yet to meet a down duvet at any price that doesn’t suffer from this condition. Better it should be folded up when not in use. Two of my bed frames have side rails and footboards, as well as attractively turned legs, so I know I could just have toppers that extend to cover the box springs, and might do that. But the third bed has a hidden frame, so a bed skirt is a necessity. I like them to be tailored, with box pleats, and accompany a topper, either fitted or quilted, with shams to match/compliment. Duvets (folded at the end of each) will have washable covers to compliment the toppers. The toppers and shams will come off at night, and the duvets go on. The cats will be happy, we’ll be comfortable, and all I have to do is fold the duvets pull everything up in the morning, and replace the toppers and shams….or not….

Please share ways for keeping the bottom sheet (whether fitted or flat, I’ve tried both) super tight. I like my bottom sheet to stay smooth, crisp and snug all night. It seems all deep pocket sheets, even with a deep mattress, get wiggly. I’ve tried sheets from Frette to Target and many in between…no luck. I’ve bought 4 types of sheet straps, used adhesive carpet corners under the sheet and even bought this ridiculous king-sized rubber band that stretches around the perimeter of the mattress to hold it tight…here’s a news flash…none of this stuff works. I’ve heard about low-profile or shallow-pocket fitted sheets instead of deep pocket but not sure where to start or if it will work. Suggestions please!!!

Red Land Cotton fitted sheets are thick fabric and shallow dimensions. They stay smooth better than any other brand I have, and are grown and fabricated in the US

We can´t layer this much in hotter regions... We have to simplify those layers to thinner quilts or use plain cotton sheets and a complementary blanket on the bottom of the bed... I compensate by adding more pillows and keeping the look clean and contemporary...

Love your videos. I always learn something new. Not to get off the bedding topic, but in your rug video you talk about the importance of all the room's furniture being under the footprint of the rug. However, some of your videos show pictures of "good" rooms that don't follow this...such as 4:13 in this video. I've seen other rooms you showcase with legs of chairs or tables "hanging off" the rug which I thought was one of your no-nos. Can you help me to better understand the right thing to do? Maybe I misunderstood your rug advice.

It's funny, I used to laugh at my parent's bedroom when I was growing up but I'm starting to think that it would almost be in style today. They decorated in the early 70s and uh.... never updated, despite me begging to help. Yea, so anyway. They had a vinyl textured wallpaper in a smallish sunny yellow and white gingham check (maybe 3/4" blocks so they looked small on the walls) all over the walls but thankfully not on the ceiling because that was definitely a thing back then. A sunny yellow wall-to-wall shag carpet. Still with me? White wood trim everywhere, the headboard and side tables were that white curly rattan that you see for porch furniture, the bedsheets were the same smallish size yellow and white gingham, the fuzzy blanket was the gingham but in a larger block pattern probably 2-3" blocks, and then a yellow duvet. I believe they accented with kelly green knick knacks and throw pillows. I don't remember what their original dressers were like, those were probably the only thing updated in that room--ever. I remember my Dad getting a new mattress sometime in the 90s and he wasn't prepared for the height difference so he CUT some of the legs off the bed frame. (/facepalm) My room you ask? Probably not in style. More vinyl wallpaper, the kind that got sticky over time. It was white with kelly green ticking stripes (small, just like on bedsheets), with BIG green and yellow daisy decals on the walls. My sheets were a cute 70s happy animal print but I had the same yellow and white gingham fuzzy blankets and then the topsheet was solid kelly green with a textured stripe pattern. Lots of painted green and white woodwork, my Dad put down a plank floor and installed white vinyl tiles (thankfully not destroying the original floors), and I had an old timey hoosier cabinet with the porcelain worktop that my mom painted kelly green. I updated my room somewhere in the 80s to a lavender and white theme with harlequin clowns, like any good 80s kid would have. The 70s....

Hi Lisa....again a great video! The biggest problem I have is getting the correct insert for the duvet. Usually the duvet is too large for the insert and then even when inner ties the insert moves all over the place and it never looks "filled up" correctly. Thoughts?

The West Elm duvet covers and inserts are the perfect solution... I can’t recommend them enough! They are larger than most brands too so they will cover the bed properly.

I heard a hotel laundry service manager interview and they said the put fairy liquid dish soap on stains. I use that now plus boiling hot temperature. In Europe we don't use bleach on laundry but we do use the stain remover for whites, it's a powder you add with your laundry.

Ladies if your tops of your sheets are wrinkled try this. When you hang them on the line spray the edge with water from a water spray bottle to wet a bit then pull the sides and flick they will dry perfectly it only takes a minute. I also pull the band on towels to keep straight when I hang them.
