I love this..but it's killing me a bit for this reason: my Mom is in care now and we are figuring out where her furniture will go. I love her vintage mid-century modern [Danish Modern teak] pieces but they don't line up with my more elegant rustic style. Killing me to have them sold as my siblings don't want them..both because they're beautiful and simple..they share that with rustic..but ..as you've pointed out, Lisa, they probably won't fit. The only thing I might be able to do is put teak table and 6 chairs in the new 3 season room I'm getting built soon, as it's going to be all white, darker floor. My interior in the main areas of the house are gyproced and not extremely rustic except for a couple large beams in the ceiling, deep window sills [telltale of log construction] and heavy, wide, plain woodwork. I'm planning to paint walls, ceiling and woodwork in the same colour, different sheens, so that makes it less rustic I guess. And I'm going to open the space between kitchen and lvrm by knocking out a stub wall except for load bearing posts, so ..a more open concept feel..and more contemporary. Still, Danish Modern pieces might feel out of place. I know.☺This is a situation for The Dezign Club..but I have to figure this out faster than September 10. I will. 🙂

Hi Lisa, love your channel, looking forward to your club debut in September! Re. “Early Relative” style, can you share some of you wisdom on on how to pick the best of the “ inheritance “ to choose a style and dispose of the rest? I have inherited some nice pieces of older/ antique furniture, am in the process of moving and trying to minimize as well as having a unified look to my new small space. Although hard to part with some loved pieces, need a process to make a decision on what to keep and what needs to go. Thanks!

My old kitchen has plugs and switches at so many heights, it made designing a backsplash really tricky. My rock-countertop installer suggested a full-height backsplash of the countertop rock, it was the best idea ever! It looks fabulous!

This was excellent, Lisa! Now I know why I had such a hard time deciding what I wanted for my kitchen remodel... I love them all!!! But my home is mainly a non-ornate cottage style so I've decided my kitchen style will be transitional. Shaker cabinets, light-medium neutral wood stained maple on the bottom cabs and painted white for the tops. Brushed nickel simple hardware and stellar snow quartz countertops. It's the appliance decisions that are killing me! I'm torn between stainless (I'm worried about fingerprints!) and white, or maybe a combo! I'm leaning white because my kitchen faces north and I think it would help brighten it up, but still not sure. It's so hard to picture it, and even my "inspiration picture" has a combination of appliances... so maybe there's not a right or wrong answer! It's hard to restrain yourself when you like so many different styles, but it's for the best so it doesn't look confused and chaotic in the end! Thank you (and your team!) SO much for all your hard work... you have been the single most helpful person in my kitchen remodel, no question, and I appreciate it more than you know. 🤗

hahahaha, you would hate my kitchen. I love it. I live in a circa 1895 Victorian era cottage and my cabinetry is either original, original modified, or recycled from an old drug store cabinet. The original owner was a drug store owner, and the second owners were an oral surgeon and nurse who loved to pinch pennies. My sink is an enameled cast iron "farmhouse" one that has the drain board to the left. My cookstove is a circa late 1940s/early 1950s Magic Chef gas model. I had reproduction bead board added as wainscot, most of which is topped with a grooved shelf for displaying antiques and collectibles. The doors are all period pieces added to the home after I bought it (the home was remodeled in the 1950s in the streamline style of the time, it didn't fit for the most part so most of it has been replaced with period or period appropriate pieces or reproductions), and the streamlined woodwork around the door frames were replaced with period trims and woodwork salvaged from other historic homes in my hometown that were scheduled for demolition. The floor is wood laminate; I did not choose that floor, so come time to replace it, I'm looking at authentic linoleum (NOT vinyl flooring). The only modern things in my kitchen are the refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster, and microwave (when that goes it will not be replaced). The countertops and backsplash are authentic 1950s Mid Century Modern Boomerang formica in yellow with teal and beige boomerangs; I thought about replacing it but it has grown on me so it stays. I keep adding period appropriate pieces to the kitchen-a chrome multi-arm towel drying rack, a white with black trim enamel baking table, a herb/spice cabinet made from a wooden cabinet that was to be thrown in the dumps, etc. Lots and lots of old stuff in my kitchen and throughout my home...and that's the way it's going to be.

I feel like my husband and I are the only two people left on earth who actually really like cherry wood finished cabinets. I know it's super unfashionable anymore, because everyone is painting everything, but to me painted cabinets don't seem likely to wear well and I really love nicely finished natural wood. I wish I could find some better ideas for how to update some things in the kitchen which didn't revolve around "paint the cabinets!!"

Especially small kitchens or lack of storage kitchens, and for convenience sake, install a pot rack in the ceiling. I chose a stainless steel oval shaped one to hang above my island/peninsula to store (and show off) my stainless steel pots and tools. It is chandelier-like and makes for easy access to pots and cooking tools; it negates all that scrambling thru cupboards for pots, and eases up on storage. Plus IKEA sells a handy wall-mounted pot lid holder. Also I detest sinks and cooktops in kitchen islands, which often serve as a work surface, dining area and gathering place. Keep the cooking mess away from here on the perimeter / back counter tops. Get over it if you think you need to be putting on a cooking show for your guests at your centre island.

Yes, I'm wondering if an outdoor kitchen in a small backyard is worth the outlay. I feel like the fire pit, swing and karaoke stage with boulder waterfalls coming down each side already eat up most of my courtyard space, such that only a BBQ grill will keep the space feeling open. There will be 4 seating vignettes. I could make way for the outdoor kitchen, but that is such a huge outlay that I'm leaning toward skipping it.

Wow there are some truly great (and expensive) kitchens in your picutres. In Germany it´s pretty common to have appliances with cabinet fronts (dishwasher and fridges). When I renovated my house five years ago I couldn´t decide on a backsplash (everything was so permanent and expensive). So I did playwood and painted it with chalkboard paint. I love it and it fit´s my space and me: I´m a teacher. =) My stile is contemporary/scandi/simple/clean. Love from Germany ♥

I’ve got a territorial 1980’s desert open concept home with big beautiful satillo tiles. Come from mid century modern home and live that sensibility. We’re eclectic and like peaceful but not boring look. Have honey colored shaker cabinets, black handles and a huge black brown ish guartz countertop. We’re torn… do we go with more drama for backsplash and do cement ish black or gray or quieter cream with a few 2 x 2 Mexican tiles scattered randomly ( like 5) it’s only 9 feet but it’s a focal point..indecisive in tucson. Lisa, I love your sensibilities and style.

My tiny house looks much more spacious with the same flooring throughout. I was worried about putting it in the kitchen, but there is no problem with it after seven years. I had three coats of satin oil-based finish put on, it’s virtually waterproof. I just make sure I don’t leave standing water on it, if I get really splashy when doing dishes. I’m so glad I chose this option, putting in different flooring would really have visually chopped up the kitchen and adjacent breakfast room. (For some reason, this Victorian cottage never had finished flooring, it was just very rough, widely-spaced planks, with generations of linoleum, then vinyl, so I put in solid red oak, as I saw in other original floors from this time. I liked the “amberized” color of the 120-year old oak I saw, so I had it stained to match, it’s beautiful, and, I think, looks very original).

This is going to be fun because we'll get to see so many great ideas, gorgeous outcomes, whether they would fit our home or purse or not. Oh, one of each, please! I love so much that you are showing us, but the one that gets me (by surprise, I think) is that I adore the the mosaic emblem with pheasants behind the stove and may have to go look for a home to put that in. LOL. I have to say that in terms of finding the right stuff, it might help with your designer to say that you have pets and want the heat source under the flooring, so now what is available to me? That gives the designer, even if it's just an advisor at the shop, your life requirements and you may hold back that if you found only ugly choices that you may reconsider the heat source placement, but the pets are family and not negotiable. I think sometimes there are problems when you do not even make clear to a salesperson what your life needs are: like, if your husband is quite tall, but also often in a wheelchair. Though I must say that, unless I fall in love with a piece, I often buy jewelry this way. When we got our wedding/engagement rings, I told the jeweler what metals, stones, styles, and price range we were looking in. Then it was more or less "show us what you've got." Then I eliminated what I did not like, my spouse eliminated what he did not like, and then we chose with fairly little time or debate required and none of our parameters were overlooked.

Adding to my previous comment, my Florida 1979 kitchen cabinets are literally melting away, LOL the material attached to the Formica white with gray blue mild lines ,like wood. It's good I love them, wish I could upgrade with the same look. Simple knob

I so appreciate this vid! I'm organizing to start my kitchen reno! This couldn't have come out on utube at a better time for me. Transitional it is! Thanks, Lisa, I finally got that decision made.

My kitchen style says..I work 3 jobs, decided to repot my plants in there, and praying the half working appliances hang in there.

I learn so much from your videos! 💜 No matter what one’s personal style is, it helps to know other styles. I love the look of contemporary, but I’m finding I’m more transitional myself (best of both worlds). For example on kitchen cabinets, I ADORE the slick no-hardware look. But I lived in an apartment once that tried to go for that look and I found that they are so high maintenance. They get dirty or get fingerprint smudges on the edges where you constantly touch them to open them (especially when one is cooking and hands are messy). I cleaned them, of course, but after a while all the touching and cleaning started to damage the paint (they were done on the cheap, clearly, just painted wooden cabinetry). From then I decided I’d rather have handles on all cabinet doors. I don’t have to touch the cabinet paint, they are easy to clean, and I can always change them if I want to refresh the look. Does it make my kitchen a little more transitional? Sure. Just a touch (pardon the pun 🙂).

GREAT video. Presently I'm doing exactly what you stated in your video. I'm looking at my family room style and trying to figure how to design my kitchen. Since my double oven is out of commission (1 1/2 years), my cooktop ticks a bit to turn on and my ice maker is me as well as missing a shelf in the refrigerator door, I'm starting to look at EVERYTHING to make a workable pleasant area to be in. THANK you for the information provided.

Once again, excellent video where it is concise and direct to the learning part. Love your style tips, especially for kitchens. In our new house, the countertops are granite (baltic brown) and they are boss along with the black appliances, also boss and a black granite sink, so, instead of changing it all out, which i cant afford, I’m working with it. I love black and already have black accents in the kitchen nook with my black farmhouse chairs and with the black stained glass chandelier. So, it’s going into a Victorian/steampunk look, hahahaha. The travertine tile on the backsplash with black accents which we added, and painting the kitchen cabinets, cutting out some of the uppers and adding black mesh screens to give something to look at, other than a wall of cabinets, there are 48, yikes. I have my vision which I drew out and it will all come together. You’re the best!
