If the storytelling seems disjointed, it's because these were originally several short animated episodes. They have subsequently been stitched together into a continuous story. And make sure you watch part 2, which shows events up to the very start of RotS. Also Grievous in this is much more capable and menacing than in the CGI clone wars show.
@DanaOtken2 ай бұрын
At the same time, it's the best deconstruction of Grevious's presence in the films: Dooku outright explains almost all of Grevious's approach (other than becoming a target and using his bodyguard droids to wear down Jedi assassins; this is his offensive role), why it works and why he needs to rely on it, and (although this is more from the novelizations) that there are Jedi Masters it simply won't work against who he should always run from.
@MegaDrain2 ай бұрын
@@DanaOtken I also saw this version of Grievous as a "myth" like stories the Jedi would tell each other throughout the war. Giving him a larger than life kind of threat. Genndy Tartakovsky is a legend in the animation industry. By the time he came out with Clone Wars, he already had iconic Cartoon Network shows under his belt like Dexter's Lab and Samurai jack. Tartakovsky excels with timing in animation, specifically he takes his time in telling a story visually and simply. Framing and blocking is very straight forward, which allows the animation of the action to have a meticulous rhythm to it. His projects have a very distinct tempo when it comes to action and comedy beats. Clone Wars is very similar to Samurai Jack in its storytelling. Minimal dialogue, telling the story and conveying a tone strictly with visuals. The show was created post Attack of the Clones as a bridge to Revenge of the Sith, fleshing out the story of the Clone Wars with what little screen time they were given for the show. And this wasn't originally made as two 10ish minute stories per episode, like most western animation is. They were mostly 3-5 minute interstitial filler between other series on Cartoon Network. For example, you'd catch the Arc Troopers story between Courage the Cowardly Dog and Billy and Mandy. It's truly a unique piece of Star Wars Media. What makes it special is Tartakovsky's distinct art style and humor, and establishing tentpole characters like Assajj and Grievous.

Filoni can’t write dialogue or stories for shit, the show got substantially better when he got John Favreau on board but it was always broken because I’m sorry, showing an entirely new major character who isn’t in any of the movies is kinda… insane? It (Filoni TV show) actually doesnt when you factor in the entire Clone Wars multimedia project. If you factor that in you have massive contradictions like the entire thing of Filoni Wars is required to take place over 6 months and thats it. This is because we have hard dates for a few stories like Anakin's knighthood (2 year anniversary of the War per Jedi Trial) and the start of Labyrinth of Evil (6months later, which is 6 months before RotS). And these stories directly reference this show while contradicting Filoni's show (because his show hadnt been made yet) See Barris Offree literally being a completely different character who eventually became a Jedi Knight and died during Order 66 by an AT-TE on Felucia as a great example.

It is important to keep in mind the context of this show relative to The Clone Wars and Star Wars at large. First, the limitations of part 1. This microseries was presented in 3-5 minute episodes. It was a mandate that all of them have a 'satisfying' amount of action even if you only caught that one three minute episode. Part 2 had 15 minute episodes so it goes much more into the context and story and is much better overall. Plus you'll find out why so many Star Wars fans were disappointed by Grievous as he appeared in The Clone Wars. First, this is Genndy Tartakovsky, he is a legend known for visual storytelling and pose defined animation as well as japanese influence that goes beyond just anime but also back to films like Seven Samurai. (Which coincidentally was a major inspiration for Lucas as well.) He has written and directed full length slow paced episodes with absolutely no dialog that were able to enrapture my ADHD mind as a 7 year old and still do as a 35 year old. So minimal dialog and long stretches of pure visual storytelling are cornerstones of his style. Most of his shows are goddamn master pieces. Sym-bionic Titan being the one I'd recommend for a first time viewer. Now the glip professional dialogue was very much in line with how Clone Troopers were characterized prior to the Clone Wars, genetically programmed to be professional and subdued, I really love the Clone Troopers in The Clone Wars though I think they are at overly unprofessional as a crutch to make them more immediately relatable which is a common issue with more modern writing. And we can't really complain about anachronism when those polearms cut through tanks proving their utility to be at least equal to a rocket launcher and Jedi only use melee. (I honestly always wished that had been a worldbuilding detail, the Jedi order only using lightsabers except for at some point during the Clone Wars between Episode 2 and 3 they officially adopted blaster in addition to lightsabers. Since I always assumed the reason the old Jedi Order didn't use them was because it made Jedi too dangerous and them only using lightsabers was a means of maintaining their autonomy from the senate. I would have also appreciated a lot more anti-Jedi weapons like slug throwers, weapons that can't be reflected with a lightsaber.)

I am amongst the people in here who agree. I enjoy this more then the entire 2008 CW show. This was apart of the old 2003 CW Media Media Project. A project that gave us this, Republic Commando, Battlefront, and more! Alongside some of the best comics and books for the Clone Wars. This was back when Clones had personalities but they were all what they were supposed to be. Clones born and raised for war not for drama. They did things by the book and as they were told. Especially Clones trained by the original ARC Troopers like you saw in this. Some were divergent and didn’t follow the mold but a majority were ready to fight and die for the Republic. This is also back when the Jedi were also more hard toothed and most saw Clones as tools to be used. A big reason for why Order 66 was originally followed by Clones who were soldiers first and foremost is because they hated the way they were treated. A majority felt the Jedi were not real soldiers and were abusing them instead of using them strategically. They also genuinely felt the order had to be followed because as part of their indoctrination as kids they were taught to follow orders above all else. You see this in Episode II. And since the Senate made Palpatine Supreme Chancellor he was above the Jedi Council and Senate. So his authority was law. Back before Inhibitor Chips were introduced (Such a shit idea).

So, fun fact: in this canon at least, the lightsabers dooku gifts asaj are the lightsabers of dookus former apprentice, Komari Vosa. She went rogue and formed the crime orginization/cult called the Bando Gora. This took place right before or after episode 1. At this time, Palpatine was looking for the perfect specimen to use for the clone army and Komari Vosa was attracting the attention of the Jedi with her criminal activities. Palpatine ordered her execution by Dooku and he suggested to kill two birds with one stone, by placing the largest bounty in the galaxy on Vosa. The one to complete the bounty would show not only their intelligence and combat skill but also the potential to defeat a force user. Enter the greatest hunt and the ultimate winner was Jango Fett. This was the plot of the “Bounty Hunter” game for ps2/xbox/gamecube. So it was a super cool minor detail to include for fans of that game.

This microseries is SO good. I remember watching it back on CN back in the day when the prequels were hot and everyone was feeding the hype. Something you need to understand, and everyone is commenting on, is that the disjointed nature of the current editing of the series is that each of the episodes was about 5 minutes long in the original broadcast. There was not much time for a long, interconnected story that you're used to with the later arcs of the 2008 3D series, and Genndy knew that but played then to his strengths. Genndy Tartakovsky is a very visual storyteller. There's dialogue, sure, but he understands what the strengths of the nature of film and animation are, in that they can tell a lot without needing dialogue based on character animation and visual design. Like, for example, although you didn't show it, there's the sequence of Anakin obliterating the Separatist forces in space, between his own piloting and the use of Republic missiles shot across the bow of an Acclamator and locked onto him as well. There's maybe 3 lines of dialogue throughout the short, but it tells you everything you need in the visuals, like Anakin flying between squadrons and shooting them down in seconds while also then manipulating the locked on missiles to his ship with just his flying alone. Also, a lot of the designs are referential to other films and TV series. Another commenter commented on the Mace Windu Mean Joe Green episode of the microseries, and the jousting (while strange to look at without context) is supposed to be Genndy and his team adapting some of the fanciful elements of high fantasy, which Star Wars draws upon, into a type of sci-fi medieval jousting tournament. I'd encourage you to give the second series a shot to see what happens next. The second series has longer episode lengths in the run-up to RotS, so more connected storytelling that you want to see can happen.

Durge is thousands of years old and fought during the Mandalorian wars, against the Mandalorians and has a special hatred of them. That's why he works for the Separatists, as the clones are born from Jango, a Mandalorian so killing clones is almost as good as killing proper ones to him. He's eventually killed for good when Anakin traps him in an escape pod and launches him into a sun. That Jedi padawan you thought looked like Shaggy, is actually called Sha'Gi and is 100% based on Shaggy. The show is as disjointed as it is cause each "episode" was only 2-3 minutes long, originally aired on Cartoon Network in 2003 and 2004 to drum up hype for Revenge of the Sith, and the lack of dialogue is linked to that, its more like little clips showing different parts of the war leading up to ROTS. So basically it's one of the coolest movie promos ever.

@@charlielynch3916 You don't have to destroy every single cell. You just have to deal a blow that is so devastating that they can't recover. Cal Kestis killed Rayvis by decapitating him.

A running theme, and one that he is a master of, with Genndy Tartakovsky's shows is that a lot of where dialog should be lets the characters actions do all the talking, this is most prominent in his most famous cartoon "Samurai Jack", where the main villain speaks MORE than the title character.

I think my biggest pet peeve around the 2008 clone wars show that followed this is that it feels largely incomplete. This show introduced grievous and ventress and shows us anakin as a padawan directly after the end of the 2nd movie. The 2008 clone wars starts with anakin already as a jesi knight and has ventress as a character that just pops up like you shouod know her, because this show was still canon when that show started, this told that story, but it was later decanonized. So now that point in time just does not exist in canon, so I'm of the opinion that the 2008 clone wars needs a season 0 that recanonizes this timeframe

I watched this a few months ago for the first time completely. I only remembered seeing a bit of it on tv and some clips on youtube. While I did enjoy it as pure dumb fun, I didn't think much of it beyond that. The bit with Durge and the lances is my favorite because it perfectly captures the ridiculously over the top tone of these movies and cause it happens quite early, it set that tone very well.

@@TheRaeside his gripe isn't about the show per say. It's that the show is interconnect between other pieces of star wars media. I.e the star wars prequel movies 1 and 2. A lot of your lack of understanding would be lessened if u had an adequate amount of exposure to them first. Which then is implied by your obvious affinity for star wars memorabilia. 2:55 in the scene with Palpatine they explained that the Republic were preparing to attack the Intergalactic Banking Clan planet of Muunilist. 3:22 No, Rex did not exist. The original characters and themes of TCW really did a number on the lore cohesion of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, and writers had to find a variety of ways to fit the show into the wider EU. This is in part why this show is so different from TCW. 3:49 These are ARC troopers, hence they are so elite and badass. The original CW show was meant to serve as little more than advertisements for the Prequel Films and wider EU, hence the lack of dialogue. In the pre-TCW lore, ARC troopers were genetically engineered to be more elite than standard clones. ARC trooper was *never* meant to be an awarded rank. 5:30 To explain the existence of TCW's Season 4 arc, the idea that the battle in the show was the 'first battle of Mon Calamari' was introduced by external writers. However, this was clearly a cop out by the external writers, as TCW never suggests that the Mon Calamari and Quarren were previously fighting, and it also ignores the leader of the Quarren Isolationist League, who was seen in both AOTC and ROTS, completely. 6:43 The Republic is not sunshines and rainbows. The old military culture of corruption and immorality in the Republic's aristocracy combined with Tarkin's cruelty and the coldness of the clones goes on to form the basis of the evil parts of the Empire. There was no inhibitor chip stuff in this timeline. 11:33 This is the bounty hunter called Durge. He is not dead after this. He is a Gendaii, a species which is very hard to kill and lives for thousands of years, and he is significantly older than Yoda. He features prominently in some EU comics, and only dies when Anakin launches an escape pod carrying him into a sun. He was reintroduced to Canon and is still alive at the time of the OT. 17:22 That is Shaggy. As in Shaggy from Scooby Doo.

I remember when this came out in 2003 I wasn’t into Starwars and I didn’t understand what I was watching when it came on Cartoon Network. It wasn’t until 2008 where I became more interested in Starwars, Started playing battlefront 1 and 2, Lego Starwars 1 and 2, The force unleashed video game on ps2 and watching Starwars KZbin videos, watching the Clonewars 2008 film. Watching the prequels and the bonus discs being lightsaber obsessed, buying the originals on VHS (I did watch revenge of the Sith when it came out in 2005 in the Cinema while on Holiday so glad it was a 12A as I was 10 years old) But honestly take no mind to these comments saying you’re not a true clone wars fan this is why that media is still there as you can catch up on it anytime you want to!

It's funny that you asked "is that shaggy?" because the creators of this show named him "Sha'gi" as a refrence to shaggy. Also the meaty guy who Obi-wan fought is called Durge, a member of the Gen'dai species. He's essentially nearly immune to death and is shockingly deadly in the lore, and the reason why his species doesn't show up often is because their homeworld was destroyed and most of the surviving species is extremely pacifist.
