Massive, deadly Papua New Guinea landslide: What to know

More than 100 people are believed dead and many more may be trapped after a massive landslide struck a remote part of Papua New Guinea Friday. Phil Mercer, an Australia reporter for BBC News, a CBS News partner, has more on the situation.

More than 100 homes duried, the death toll will be more than 300 as expected. While the images and videos were posted, the landslide was still happening. The land underneath was believed was moving because the cracks along the road leading to Porgera gold mine were seen expending from narrow cracks widening. The cracks will cause massive landslide aided by rain. The current landslide see happen without rain.

DEFORESTATION!!!! Lived in Asia for quite awhile, experienced typhoons, tsunamis, earthquakes and yes landslides closing roads down for weeks… In my case it was ONLY 1 road In and Out to my city for miles, it completely shut us off from the rest of the world for a few weeks, it unearthed old graves and entire graveyayard slid down the mountain onto us…Crazy stuff but I guess Im glad I experienced them first hand.✌🏻🇺🇸🍻

You are the only one. The only human explanation is deforestation which creates loose and unstable soil. But no one intentionally caused this. What gain would they have if they did?

@@stephenf123 It is unlikely that deforestation would affect the stability of the bedrock. From the height of the huge scarp, the slip was up to 200 meters under the upper slope of the hill. Looking at my best guess of the landslide location on GE, there is obvious evidence of landslides in the prehistroic past (hummocky terrain, chaotic drainage). It was a purely a stochastic natural disaster by geologic processes that have been going on long before any forests were cut.

@@franklittle8124 Yeah that was my other guess as to why it happened. I was just offering an explanation for how humans might have caused it. But natural reasons are even better. Truly points out that no one did this intentionally.
