My grandparents had a farm in Smethport, Pa. After my father passed in 2022 I went through all the old tools he had from that farm. Just finished up cleaning many crescent wrenches, pipe wrenches, wood handle screwdrivers, pliers, lanterns, bear trap, Disson saws, drill and awl just like yours etc etc. everything I worked on said made in USA. Nice knowing all those items came from my grandfather and some, I’m sure, came from my great grandfather. I even have that socket tool😂
@MattsGarage17916 күн бұрын
I know exactly what you mean. did the same with all of my grandfather's tools from his little basement 'workshop'. all made in USA and each one a special memory of him. Barns are a great place to rescue pieces of history like that and glad you have your family's to use and treasure. 👍 Thanks for visiting and sharing that story and Happy New Year New 🎊

7:10 it almost looks like a mortise chisel that was reground 90°. 21:16 I've got an old 7/16" Allen driven socket set from Handle Lock Wrench Co. Such an odd sized Allen. I think mine is from the '20s. 23:01 that would make a nice First aid kit mounted on your workshop wall.

The No.341 Greenlee? A little more digging and I believe its an old wood turning chisel.

That is definitely a massive tool haul Matt. There is so much good stuff there I don't know what to comment on! The Montgomery Wards tool box is neat - I also like the Indestro socket sets. what a great assortment of saws! That stuff will keep you busy for a while!
@MattsGarage17919 күн бұрын
Thanks Bill! We definitely found some diamonds in the rough at these last few estate sales. seems like I'm starting to accumulate a number of old tools from Montgomery Ward. The saws ate so much fun and educational. the saws are far from collector grade and that's what I love about them... I find them for next to nothing and get to bring them back to their former beauty 👍 hard part us picking where to start 😁 thanks again and take care!

I've seen that same white ruler. My dad/granddad had them. No clue about them now. Been too many years. The one thing I love about your channel is every once in a while, you will pull out a tool and it takes me back to when I young child with my dad or granddad building something.

I love those H.k Diston Porter loppers. I've never seen on of those before. I have quite a few H.K.Porter Foresters 0,2 and 3. My dad was a machinist at their Somerville Massachusetts plant in the 1960s. I have about 55 tools made there. I new porter acquired Diston, but never knew distance made loppers. Very cool❤.
@MattsGarage17919 күн бұрын
I agree, the Disston Porter lopers are amazing . . . quite in need of a make-over. but still cool. that's some great history with your dad! thank you for sharing 👍 This is the kind of historical 'detective' work that makes restoring vintage tools so rewarding and enjoyable.

Nicest grouping of estate sale tools I've seen. Lots of patina to banish. The Indestro sets are amazing. Not only are they complete, they still have their original holders. The awl with the green handle is an unusual design, in my opinion. I don't know about the decal for your particular tool box, but many designs for Craftsman can be purchased online. The cool Delco motor is also a nice find. Most of the vintage hand saws I find are Disstons, (famous PA company) which suggests to me the company had a very large share of the market back in the day. I am old enough to remember the company slogan "Diston Goes the Distance." Looking forward to your restoration videos, and picking up some useful resto tips.
@MattsGarage179110 күн бұрын
Pat thank you so much - It's always a pleasure to read your comments and hear your thoughts. Really appreciated! The Indestros were cool to find altogether. I haven't seen the large set before with the full sized ratchet on top, and the neat handle on the awl/ice pick is why I snagged it. 👍 I'd really like to purchase a vinyl printing/cutting machine to be able to do all of the missing labels on old tools. Disston saws are so much fun because there are sooo many out there( a FEW in decent shape in the wild ), most need a lot of TLC to bring them back around. And there is so much information compiled on the history of Disston saws to help in research. Disston was actually the largest saw maker in the world at one point early 20th century. Hardest part now is picking a place to start for the next round of restorations! 😁 Thanks again and Happy New Year!

What a great haul! Just 3 takeaways: 1] The Columbian woodworker's vise is a great "get".2) The Delco bench grinder has at least twice the power of what is made today. 3) The Durall utility knives piqued my curiosity. I located a Durall Tool Company in Yonkers that apparently just recently was listed as "permanently closed". At this point, I don't have any more info.
@MattsGarage17919 күн бұрын
That's great to hear DanaUdapp 👍 The vise is definitely deserving of a fresh look and a proper install on my bench. I was really excited that the Delco spun up right away( and winds down equally smooth ) it needs a good cleaning but will be fine addition to the shop. The 'Durall' style knife is a question mark, it looks exactly like others that have the logo on the sides. Are there Durall catalogs available online? Thanks for the great info and stopping by the channel 👍

@MattsGarage17915 күн бұрын
This entire lot comes from at least three different estate sales. I typically just load up a box/duffle bag of items at these events. The toolbox itself and the load of small hand tools stuffed in it probably cost about $40.
