Massive fire engulfs historic San Bernardino building

Fire crews battled a massive fire that engulfed a historic building in San Bernardino Wednesday night. Fire crews responded to the Harris Building at 300 N E Street shortly after midnight.
The four-story building, which is nearly 100 years old, opened as a department store in 1927 before closing in 1999. The building has remained abandoned since. Local business owners said the vacant building has reportedly attracted squatters and homeless individuals who are reportedly the source of two fires that were ignited at the building in 2024.

San Bernardino has only two historic buildings left, this one that burned and the one next to it, that’s it. They tore down many more (1/3 of downtown) to build that stupid , “set back from the street” Carousel Mall, which was torn down btw, they got nothing left, no more downtown, they did it to themselves!!! Downtown Riverside is the inland empire’s only downtown destination now!!!!

Incorrect. They only have one historic builiding now. This second fire destroy so much of the Harris building beyond repair. All of the Harris building files started right after the carousel mall was tore down. So we all know who planned the fires out..

@@foxthorne well, this whole debacle started in the 1960s. San Bernardino had their first enclosed shopping mall open in 1966, the Inland Center, just 1-1/2 miles south of downtown. It quickly started to siphon off shopping from downtown. City leaders wanted a solution. Instead of thinking of something different, you know, working with what they had, they decided that the only solution was to build another mall. A bunch of brilliant Einsteins they were back then!

Easier to torch the Harris building than to pay to have it demolished the mall behind the Harris building has already been demolished. It’s in San Bernardino the land can’t be worth much. Highest crime in Cali
