If I recall correctly, Andrew was one of the initial 4Runners with a podcast and I think he had started out either living and or working at his parents home. He must spend a respectable amount of time editing the videos and the music which is almost always on point (for me). It seems only those who try to improve their property have to deal with The building department s and or homeowners associations. The HOAs typically get extremely drunk with their power and authority with much support created by attorneys who seemed to thrive off of the excessive abuse of authority, power and control. The inspectors in the building departments are often a hit and miss regarding abuse of power as well. They can be beneficial for maintaining a bar of excellence. Established with building codes but aside from that It often seems absurd. Case in point submit the architectural drawings and the entire damn board wants a copy which subsequently increases the cost or financial liability to any given project. It just seems like another way for government agencies to dip their hands in our pockets to take more money, time and energy IMHO. It's been a good ride however, if I had it too due over, I'd follow in your footsteps. You are enjoying life to the fullest and I know many envy your lifestyle. I have to add, you are the reason I have a 3-year-old yellow Lab. He has added so much to my life and will probably be the reason for me getting up and out as I get older. It amazes me how well-rounded Andrew is. When I was a teenager, I helped my uncle build his house. Then I helped him build his shop. After that I spent many years helping him do mechanic work out of that shop. He taught me so much, while I'm not a master at any trade, I know just enough to get most things done because of my uncles. They have all passed away and I miss them terribly, but now I get to share some of that knowledge with my boys, and it's amazing seeing them learn.

For what it’s worth here. I love the concept of your castle. My for what it’s worth contribution is the following. I build a similar house and I also had my shop below the living spaces. Very convenient for sure. My issue is that all of the odors from everything done in the shop will permeate into the living space. I had insulation, fan evacuation ducting and the solvents, exhausts etc still became present.

Water is the enemy of buildings. Large roof overhangs and proper site drainage and slope are key. All new buildings should be designed with large roof overhangs. The large overhang provides beauty and protection from the sun, rain and wind. Protection of the doors, windows and siding make for a more durable and comfortable home.

Not always. Roof overhang is a north-eastern feature (so fine where he is) that migrated its way into Florida decades ago. When hurricane Andrew (coincidence?) hit FL, those overhangs acted as a sail causing major roof failure. Once the roof is gone, you can expect a total loss of house and property. What I am saying is "rules of thumb" are not necessarily always appropriate. The other thing that was happening at the time was more and more builders were using OSB and staples to attach roof sheathing. Fine Homebuilding magazine did an article on it after the storm. Many pictures of failed roofs with no sheathing left but small chunks held in by staples. I will never use OSB in any roof I build.

Yeah but its "to code" so according toa bunch of posters in the comments here they are somehow "safer and better". its laughable what length some ppl will go to to justify the theat of gov't force to control what ppl do on their own property.

The cause which Heemeyer stood for is that you can't build something just because you can (remember, his neighbor built a concrete plant right beside his shop). Codes are there because you can't build what you want, and Andrew is precisely the man that has the means and resources to build by the codes.

Throughout my life, I have seen used machines. Not many new machines, not owned by anyone I knew, anyway. I had always wondered what the people were like that bought those machines new, now somewhat worn but still functioning. Now I know. That Hyundai runs like a top. The Gentle "whine" just says, "Hey! As a home builder in Florida I must say building codes suck but do work. When hurricanes hit us it’s a night and day difference between homes that are constructed under the the new rules versus older homes that were constructed with no codes. The new structures stay together and prevent parts of the homes becoming airborne and damaging other structures. I hear you, I feel you. But I do believe these codes are for the better in highly populated residential areas. As far as rural construction I don’t see a need for it as long as it causes no harm to anyone around you. Nice to see you moving along with the build. I got to thinking while watching this, right about this time of year is when those deer carcasses start showing up on your property, it may take a few tries maybe even a few weeks but I bet if you went and stayed up there you could probably catch whoever is doing it. I tell you, I have known a few hunters and they get at it like 40 minutes before the sun comes up until about 10, you could probably go back to camp and doodle around for a couple hours, make some videos or something, then go back to finding them in the afternoon as most of them get back on the stands from around 2:30 to dark. I bet you would see something if you invested your time into this. A clever way I found to lead the deer to safer grounds while improving their health was a bag of high mag, 2 bags of mineral salt and 1 bag of feed grade lime. throw them all in a mixer or try to do it by hand. makes about 3 5 gallon buckets of mix. Deer seem to love it for a mineral lick. Now I ain't telling you to sit at it, some places do not like you baiting them with things like that, but maybe in an out of the way spot near a water hole but dry with some edible dirt, would get them to come to the spot rather frequently. ;) Hope it helps.

Fantastic content as usual Andrew. Never get bored of the videos you produce. It would be really interesting for you to do a video of all of your current machines. It's fantastic to see your business grow over time and I suspect your followers would also agree, it would be really interesting to see a video of your entire collection of machinery and learn a bit about them, especially some of your more recent purchases, in one video. Just a thought you might want to consider. Regardless, and avid follower here!

I understand what youre saying about permits. Years ago, in my town the build inspector quit, and I built houses. And here in WI there only a small window to get certain things done before winter, so I went ahead and started the basement and the town officials came out and asked if I was building a house and I said, just digging a hole, and of course they said , we can make you fill it in, but I went ahead and continued

Building my own home and getting the building permit has been the worst part of the process so far. Stay patient, agree with everything you said.

It is one thing to require strict permitting where the city/town has paid to build infrastructure to the site. They have an interest in the impact on the value of their investment. It is a little less obvious to me why a town could justify having a say over a building site that is only visible by air and only accessible by a very long private road.

Yep building permits in many towns are out of control imo its definitely stifling growth in America. I'm a big fan of Victory concrete on YT you should see the all the crap that city made him do to build it was ridiculous and expensive.

Completely agree with planning and zoning boards especially out in the countryside. I wanted to put up a small wind turbine to power my home during bad weather (to be green essentially) the zoning board turned down the 1KW turbine on the top of a 20 foot pole without providing any reason at all. We have huge properties here and my home is surrounded by hay fields. I should have just installed the thing and dealt with the repercussions if any afterwards. Asking permission gives Karen an undeserved feeling of power over others. Flip the coin and they have no problem trying to impose their will on you.
