Massive floods have hit several provinces along China’s Yangtze River, where rainfall in the middle and lower reaches of the waterway has hit the second-highest levels recorded during the July 1 to 7 period since 1961. Extreme weather across the country has also forced some areas to postpone all-important national college entrance exams known as gaokao. A key reservoir in the eastern province of Zhejiang has opened all nine of its spillways for the first time after flood-control levels were exceeded because of heavy rain and floods further upstream in Anhui province.

These are video's that made it through the Chinese censor, so fairly rosy. But in total it gives a fair view of China as I experienced it. Much of the slums have been removed since 2008 and replaced by the tofu buildings. Those buildings are often not great quality, but compared to before quite an improvement. In all though the picture of China here is pretty much as I recall it. But if you swing the camera you may see less affluent parts as well.

Floods occurs every year due to climatically reasons. Being in the geographical location that it is China gets very wet and humid summer with a lot of rain, but dry in winter. Basically, the entire year worth of rain are concentrated within the few months during the summer. Between the flood season from may to Sept every year, there is about 70-90% of the annual rain fall, hence causing flood. It is worse this year because of ENSO which is the irregularly periodic variation in winds and sea surface temperatures over the tropical eastern Pacific Ocean en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Niño-Southern_Oscillation

No Matt,.. those images are pretty much China as it is. The urban area's that is,.. the country side is much less developed most of the time. But it can be surprising how derelict fairly new buildings (1980's) have become and the difference in living quality between older and newer apartments. But about 70% of what I've seen is like that in the video. Without the flooding that is.

People forget the terrain of China are dang near mountainous wet lands. The many rivers of China made land prime for farming, that's why many of China provinces sits along rivers. Corporate greedy needs to disappear from all countries and certain dams around the world needs to be slowly demolished and allow the natural flow of certain rivers and streams. Humans have longed for controlling mother nature and have failed every time... Its only a matter of time before other dams around the world experience this amount of heavy rain.
