MASSIVE issue found with Sony a7 IV | Why your audio sucks

I spent over 6 hours troubleshooting this issue before I found it. The TLDR is there is a problem where the a7 IV introduces a TON of line noise into your audio when using the mic input. I tried two different camera bodies, 3 different mics, and they all have the same result.

Bought a new wireless lapel mic rig - tested it out and discovered this issue today. Your video is the only one I can find on this bug. I did the updates to see if that solves anything, no such luck. I tested the onboard camera mic, and it has no detectable floor noise. No combination of gain settings between the wireless mic, and the camera gain seems to remove it. Now in regards to your solution - it doesn't seem to be working for me. I'm primarily filming on full Manual mode. So I tried filming, switching the toggle to a few different modes (1-2-3-2-3, then back to manual) but it still has that floor noise hiss. Since it's been a year since you released this video, have you figured out a permanent solution? Thanks for your time!

I have not figured out as I recorded with the sony electronic mic or an external recorder so I did not find a solve. I have also since then upgraded to the FX3 for my main cam. Yea I am shocked I am the only video talking about this issue which is nuts. I might still try and update my camera to see if it fixes it but yea the noise floor issue is so freaking odd and frustrating. Sorry my work around doesn't work!

I was going to buy the Rode NTG mic (a couple of weeks back) and read a number of comments that it had a definite audible hiss - in spite of it giving a great recording. This put me off buying it. I wonder if that hiss is connected to the problems you were experiencing. The issue may have been with the A7iv instead of the mic ...

Yea I have used the NTG and it sounds great. If they were a7IV users they probably didn't know about this issue. Infact, I dont think a lot of people know this problem.

When I plug my micro rode go in the microphone red hole I have absolutely no song registred any suggestion ?

Make sure you have some volume set on the camera body.

I have not! I upgraded to the FX3 and use this as a B Cam now to be honest. Might dive back into it to see if I can solve the issue.

The Port on the A7IV is terrible, just bought new premium cables and everytime you touch up against the cable and it gives you static

My A7IV also have this noise.... I've updated the software and the noise still there... gonna try your metod and check the results. Sony gotta solve this problem SOON...

Depending on the use case, the Sony electronic mic works great with no issues, otherwise you could try to get an external recorder, the Sony sup top handle or ECG switch to a wireless mic. I sometimes record audio from my PC setup and then sync in post.

Maybe the newer Rode mics have a problem, not the camera? I've been using the old Rode stereo video mic pro - no problems (well, the usual noise floor all prosumer cameras have).

I used the DJI wireless, couple rode mics and they all had the same issue on two different cameras. I don't think this is an issue with the mics.

I'm still trying to get the audio to manual mode instead of auto. Apparently the limiter is always on and there is automatic gain on auto mode! WHERE'S MY MANUAL AUDIO RECORDING MODE SONY??!!

I mean, the audio shouldn't be auto unless you are using a mic that has an auto setting. That is really strange.

Honestly, not sure! I feel like it is a different issue compared to the one I am speaking on. I suggest using an external recorder to get rid of both these issues! I know people mentioned the a7 IV having some lose-ish ports so maybe it is that? but I would suggest if you can and for professional work, use an external recorder. Could even get the DJI Wireless set that can record on board and in camera so you have a back up. And it saved my ass before.

Try what I said, change the mode dial then back to the one you went to use, should get rid of the line noise.

@@IAmBPala doesn't help in my case for some reason. but I'm also at 1.10 the line noise is there with and without microphone (built in)
