Yes, but majority of those containers are empty, as there are a lot of products exported from Southland, so need the empty containers to load.

Thanks, our trains are considerably smaller than what you regularly see

I guess you could that a "decent" size, and I would quite agree with that statement. That said, calling it "massive;" well that's really stretching it, especially when looking at the sizes of consists in the US and Australia. Theirs you can call massive, which are well over a mile long. But this, mate, its a baby. Australia holds the world record for the longest consist, which is BHP Iron Ore (Rio Tinto). The Consist length was 4.57 miles or 24,123 ft 11.61 inches (7.353 km); going by the Guinness World records. The consist was made up of 682 ore cars and 8 ES44ACi diesel electric Locomotives (1 Double Header a 6 DPUs (Distributed Power Units)). Sorry to burst your bubble on the Massive train thingy.

@Stephen8601 massive in the Kiwirail sense. 919 is often a short services which only a handful of wagons, so it was massive in that regard, but yes not in a worldwide sense.

Is there a limit to amount of carriages each train can be made up of
@TravellingRailSpotter5 ай бұрын
Yes there is. The length is dependent on the length of the passing loop as alot of New Zealand is single track, with passing loops where one train can pull into to allow another train to cross. The weight of a train is dependent on the ruling gradient & each class of locomotive has a maximum weight it can haul eg a DX can haul more than a DC. For Southland it is normally around 2000T and 900 metres
