For those interested, HMS Victory can be visited in the dockyard in Portsmouth, UK. You can have a tour around it. Heck, you can even get married on it. They also have what’s left of the Mary Rose.

And HMS Warrior which was a naval ship from the Victorian era and never went into combat as no other nation wanted to go against it…although it’s reign of being the most fiercest ship only lasted a few years when other ships took its place

I visited it, the entrance door is only 4’3 tall, but the ship is beautiful. The Mary rose is basically just half a skeleton and it is stunning seeing it in a huge room. On the warrior, all the sailors were pretending it was 1860, and they showed groups how the huge guns were fired.

The Ottoman Navy started to move towards Western style Ships of the Line in the aftermath of the disaster at Lepanto in 1571. Ottoman shipwrights were known to have worked and studied in Dutch, French (Especially as they were allies), and Italian shipyards. By the battle of Navarino in 1827 the entire fleet was composed of rated vessels like most European navies.

Ottomans always had European type high deck ships but they were using them in trade rather than Navy. Cuz they were a Mediterranean State an inland sea with many islands. Due to that they preferred Galleys in their fleets. But during the conquest of Crete not Lepanto, they started to switch from Galleys to High Deck bigger ships.

@@alisahinnnnexactly. Sweden also had 2 navies where one consisted of small boats that could patrol the archipelagos of the Swedish and Finnish coasts. The other one was the normal ship of the line navy

The portuguese navy is one of the oldest in the world. They started the voyages of the discoveries of the world. Right after the spanish tagged along. Portuguese had the top of the lines ships at that time, 15th and 16th centuries. Portugal and Spain " ruled the world". But Portugal had a succession crisis and the king of Spain took advantage and took rule over Portugal. Then Spain also added the Portuguese ships to its armada and decided to atack England. They lost and basically Portugal had no more navy. That is when England started to take over the world. I just wanted to try and just make you somewhat know a bit more and perhaps make you more excited about this era. Thank you for the video, it really puts us in that time. :).

"The portuguese navy is one of the oldest in the world." They started the voyages of the discoveries of the world. Right after the spanish tagged along." Founded in the 12th century. In the middle of the Reconquista. So while the rest of the Kingdoms of Iberia were busy fighting the moors, Portugal went fishing Near North Africa. "Portuguese had the top of the lines ships at that time, 15th and 16th centuries. " The Spanish Navy was the most powerful maritime force in the world in the 16th and 17th centuries. And Our ships were just as good as the Portuguese. "Portugal and Spain " ruled the world". But Portugal had a succession crisis and the king of Spain took advantage and took rule over Portugal. Then Spain also added the Portuguese ships to its armada and decided to atack England. They lost and basically Portugal had no more navy. That is when England started to take over the world. *I just wanted to try and just make you somewhat know a bit more and perhaps make you more excited about this era. Thank you for the video, it really puts us in that time. :).* " No you just wanted to poke shit at Spain like a typical Portuguese. Always believing yourself superior to the rest of Spain. You guys are no different. Don't forget it all started with Asturias which later branched out into the Kingdoms of Galicia, Leon, Castile, Navaree, Aragon, Portugal came much later, it was part of the Kingdom of Galicia, before Garcia II of Galicia declared himself King of Portugal 1095 AD, Portugal broke away from the Kingdom of Galicia. That's why Galician and Portuguese are pretty much the same language. Galicia, Leon, Castile, Navaree, Aragon would later merge forming the nation of Spain after the Reconquista. Except for Portugal. Spain - Iberia Named Hispania by the Romans, Spania by the Visigoths. I'm Galician. I love Spain and Portugal. But guys like you piss me off. Infighting and betrayal was the reason Iberia was so easily invaded in the first place. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pp7Xq6CngbR0jKM

When you were talking about how the ships are more survivable than we’d give them credit for. It’s worth noting that the canon balls couldn’t penetrate below the waters surface. They’d skim across the water and just wreck the gun decks but leave all the stores and valuables underneath, alone.

playing for the portuguese, kudos! when you say if the portuguese navy was not that great, i should tell you that we didnt't have as many ships as the english, but the ones we had sure were impressive, even on england's standards. so, the 1500's 1502 the galleon Flor do Mar had 400t 36m 1512 galleon Santa Catarina do Monte Sinai 800t 38m 140 guns 1534 galleon São João Baptista 1000t 366 guns, participated at the conquest of Tunis 1580 galleon São Martinho 54m 366 guns, it fought a group of ships by Francis Drake and lived to tell the tale. 1589 galleon Madre de Deus 1600t 50m 32 guns, at the time it was 3 times larger than the biggest english ship. it's estimated cargo hold when captured, was HALF of the whole english treasury at the time. the 1600's 1650 galleon Santíssimo Sacramento 60 guns, fought and beat the barbary pirates, and 3 dunkirk corsair ships on it's first voyage alone. 1663 galleon Padre Eterno Galleon 2,000t 53m 144 guns the 1700's 1707 galleon Nossa Senhora da Conceição 80 guns, also a distinguished ship that fought piracy. 1715 galleon Santa Rosa 1100t 56m 70 guns, fought on the victors side in the battle of matapan and fought piracy several times. 1771 galleon Nossa Senhora da Conceição 3500t 66m 90/110 guns, this one helped the admiral nelson's fleet. if you want to argue, why compare a 1700's portuguese 80 gun ship to a 1st rate 100 gun english at the same time period, here it goes... we used less guns, but they were bigger size cannons. I shall quote English Admiral Anson: "our 70-gun ships are little superior to their 52-gun ships." RICHMOND, Herbert William: The Navy in the War of 1739-48. Cambridge, 1920, p. 267. if you compare what is official, according to the 1706 Establishment and the corresponding Gun Establishment: 3rd rate 80 gun had 24 pound cannon lower rank, 12 pound cannon upper rank, 6 pound cannon bow and stern castles. the portuguese ships 80 gun galleons were using 36 pound cannon lower rank, 12 pound cannon upper rank, 8 pound cannon bow and stern castles. All added up, this means the 80 gun Portuguese galleons had a 33% superior artillery compared to the English 80 guns equivalent. In this example, a 66 gun Portuguese Carrack had a 10% superior artillery effect, compared to an English 70 gun 3rd rate. Two years later, the English 1719 Establishment, improved the lower rank gun size in the 80 gun Carracks to 32 pound guns, without improving the ship sizes, at a time where the equivalent Portuguese and French Ships were already upgraded to 36 Pounder guns. At this age, the 1700s were the prime of these kind of ships, and average Portuguese 80 gun galleons could easily rival with an English 2nd or 1st rate 100 gun ship. The English 3rd rate 80 gun Ships were heavily outclassed by a same age Portuguese 80 gun galleon. The only advantage of the English was the sheer amount of ships, even if of lower power. Nonetheless, Portugal is and was an ally to the English since 1386. it Still is in effect today, the Windsor treaty is the oldest treaty in the world, so that it hardly as makes no difference, we would never fight each other anyway. We actualy fought at their side at a number of occasions. most of the ships in that list did.

Brilliant match. Fishes recommended course of action is worthy of Nelson himself. The the spirits of the admirals of Portugal are looking upon you with great favour Apollo. And yeah totally agree with you Pixie about Naval Combat in Total War. I really hope that with the standalone 'Flashpoint' projects they do a naval orientated campaign, like where its just naval combat, perhaps with a smattering of amphibious assault, in advance of them doing 'The Ultimate Total War'. What do you think? Oh, and its CAL-E-DONIA mate lol. She was a 120 gun First-Rate ship of the line launched in 1808 in Plymouth. She served as the flagship of the Mediterranean fleet under the then Admiral Pellew, (the same Pellew from the Hornblower books and tv series)

Anyway I want to point out how hard I would of been in a battle to move around . I suggest if you visit England and you in to Napolic era you see it in Portsmouth dock as it was Admiral Nelsons flag ship in the battle of trafager which is the battle the marked the British’s rule over the sea for the next 100 years

Not all naval achievements must necessarily have to do something with military achievements and some hundred years earlier than the Napoleonic War, the Portuguese were awesome, just to name some: Dom Henrique (he created a school for navigation in Sagres), Vasco da Gama (he disovered india by sea), Gil Eanes (surrounded the Cape Bojador), Bartolomeu Dias(surroundes the Cap of Good Hope), Pedro Álvares (discovered Brazil) and last but not least Fernão de Magalhães, who surrounded the earth Estou falando isso como alemão! Gosto muito da história portuguesa, Thiago ;-)

Tiago Marques Portugal did have a professional Army that Wiped out most of the Aztecs, Mayans and other Native factions in South America. The fact that Portugal is closer to America than any other European Nation made it easier to supply their vast armies that even Spain was inspired. The fact Portugal borders Spain and never owned land elsewhere in Europe they do seem like a passive nation in total war

At the time of the Napoleonic Wars, Portugal's navy numbered roughly a dozen to twenty ships of the line, not bigger than about ninety guns. However they were considered superior in design and construction to even British ships, at a time when the Royal Navy had the highest construction standards (although not always adhered to) in the world.

Of course they had line ships, including 1st rates. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ships_of_the_line_of_the_Ottoman_Empire There's even a fascinating case where a Russian brig attacked two Turk lineships, disabled them both, and escaped with their lives, which is something like disabling a Tiger Tank with a hard-hat and a BB gun. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brig_%22Mercury%22_Attacked_by_Two_Turkish_Ships

Back in the early '00 I started with a game Medieval Total War. I fell in love. Since then I've played all releases except Warhammer. Most appreciated is TW Napoleon for the balanced game mechanics. TW Empire I like for the campaign map and the Netherlands..and I like Shogun 2 for his difficulty. It's so awesome that I still (30y old) play this on regular bases and I intend to do so. Regardless of what my girlfriend thinks of it :P
@Meltorizor

So you're basically missing the best two games of the TW franchise. I admit, the DLC marketing is unfair and expensive but you get a extremely refined, fun, rich and diverse, extremely modable, entertaining and community supported AAA title. I can't recommend it enough. Wait for a sale and then give it a chance. Like you, my two most favorit not WH Total War games are Medieval 2 and Empire. Come back to them every once in a while.

Portugal at one stage (1500's) was the greatest naval power in the world. They started the age of discovery and they were the first to discover that the world was round whilst Portugal and Spain were united for a short period (Spanish ship with Portuguese Navigators) . They introduced many new innovations such as the Astrolabe, nunius, breach cannon aboard ships, Galleons and the caravel(Nau). Some even believe that Christopher Columbus was a Portuguese traitor who gained maps to the America's through the death and inheritance from his father in law who was a governor of the Portuguese island of Madeira and went to the Spanish crown for funding to go there. Around the 1700's they didnt have the population to keep up with rival european nations.

naval artillery at the time went by shot weight a 32 lb gun fired a 32lb cannon ball and on larger ships the largest guns where closer to the waterline than the smaller ones because the shape of the ships that they got wider the farther down the side of the ship you go. The bigger guns required more space to recoil back which was countered by rope tied around the knob on the back of the cannon and tied to post on both sides of the gun position. The leading cause of death on these ships was not being hit by a cannon ball but being hit by the splinters of wood that would be created from cannon ball hits. Ships made from green wood would resist splintering better than dried wood but this also made the ships take on water a little worse while sailing than a ship made from dried wood.

I love naval battles on napoleon and to a lesser extent, empire. being something of a naval nut I did find myself correcting aloud with terms and jargon but considering you didn't know anything about it before hand the commentary was pretty good and I enjoyed it :D Jackie fish had a good plan of engagement. tbh the french and ottoman players had very little plan and suffered for the lack of proper lines of battle. Also having the wind on your side facing toward the enemy gives you the weather gauge therefore control of the pace of engagement. the ottomans gained this as you sailed away but completely failed to use it. Nice video

Apollo, in the beginning you say that Britain and France are the heavyweights but my little country, the Netherlands were the second heavyweight next to Britain. We weren't big but we controlled a lot of colonies. Our ships and captains were better too and so we defeated Britain twice in sea wars but we just didn't have the population to keep replenishing so we lost the third. So please remember that, the French were complete garbage.

The French weren't bad. They were just outperformed by the British. Just like the Spanish, and the Danish, and even eventually the Dutch. During the 1800s, the only nation that came anywhere close to beating the Royal Navy was the U.S. Navy, and even we didn't actually beat them, just battered each other into a draw.

When Playing a coalition force I always try to capture the largest Spanish ship which is a 140 gun monster, only works about 25% of the time. Playing some rocket ships and mortar ships is also fun. Btw you mention that your bigger ship had all the advantages once, but ships sometimes blow up with little damage. I'd like to see a mod that simulates the Age of Great Ships, 1630's-1680's, centered around the Anglo-Dutch wars. Ships then had bronze cannons, tall forecastles to stress boarding attacks, and great galleons with spritsail topmasts like La Couronne, HMS Sovereign of the Seas, and Prins Willem. Those ships were more primitive, but a lot more ornate.
