This old place was built in 1920 and the church was built in 1880. The large house was said to have been originally built too go with the church next door but it’s original purpose was unclear. We talked to a few people around who said it was built as a Catholic school too go with the church but once the church closed, the school wasn’t far behind. For a while it was converted into an old folks home for the elderly but in the early 2000’s that closed as well and the place has sat crumbling away since. Thanks for watching!

It’s a shame someone couldn’t go in these places and salvage the stuff. Those leaded window are crying to be re-used. The doors, the woodwork there is just too much stuff that could be used. Think of the money that is being wasted.

There are outfits out east that do that. Used to watch a lot of This Old House on PBS, and they'd go to these giant salvage warehouses full of period stuff salvaged from grand old houses. Fixtures, fireplaces, woodwork, doors, stained glass windows, etc. Pretty cool.

Honestly, the amount of historical buildings that get left behind, or demolished for nothing is actually insane. I document abandoned places around the world and the things I've found are just crazy. For example, Japan has over 10 million abandoned buildings, 8 million of those are homes alone. I also found this historical town in Germany, with historical old buildings and cemetery's - destroyed from a Lignite mine, and done legally. That is just a small portion, we have lost SOOOOOO much, it's honestly sad.

@@apocyldoomer Obsolete? Do you know why many of these houses become obsolete in the first place? Bad laws create homes that cannot be reused after someone's death, or if they just leave it behind. These houses sit for years without any life or renovation, of course they get destroyed over time. Knock them all down? That is something only an ignorant person would say. I've seen literally hundreds of thousands of old buildings reused, and revitalized bringing in a whole new opportunity for wealth and income. The history in these buildings and what they can bring is worth quite a bit for a city. Especially one that is on a decline. I've helped rebuild a massive building from the 1800s, and working on another one this summer. Look up "Old Sweet Springs Resort in WV" Amazing history and building that I've had the opportunity to work on and document. It was like you say, decrepit for many many years, until one old man decided to buy it and rebuild it, he's rebuilt quite a bit of old buildings. Buildings designed by presidents such as Thomas Jefferson need to be saved.

It's interesting to see those made too. We had a friend that made them. The house/school/nursing home still has a lot of the old beautiful charm to it. My housekeeper would be backing away from all that woodwork to dust! 🤣 I love the scenery you've started showing at the end of your videos. Peaceful quiet nature sounds are just the best! @Ms. Pete Sidewalk oh I believe most everyone gets forgotten after death. I'm more interested in the history of a house itself, the architecture. Junk on the floor isn't necessarily a deceased owners junk, it's more likely a squatter, or family members using an abandoned property for storage of their junk, which had nothing to do with a deceased owner. The woodwork is the mark of amazing craftsmen of the time period, nothing like the expensive (cheap) knock offs like seen today! What a sad scene upstairs, SO many personal items left behind just to be disgraced by vandals! I'd be sitting up on that top porch too, either listening to the rain, enjoying the sunshine, or looking for a place to feel a cooling breeze. Hello Kappy & Ruby Doo😊 Thanks. Just wanted to tell u that the civilization that built the huge temples and churches used sacred geometry, like the churches big front circular window has the frequency of how love emotion looks when it vibrates and the sun coming through adds to that vibration inside the structure. There were several more designs inside that also carry a vibration. Thought u would enjoy learning about this, I did.

I'm pretty sure it was originally an old Catholic School and when it closed the church would have sold it. I'm a preachers daughter. The church my dad pastored at in Clinton, Iowa was a HUGE 4 story building built in 1800s that was a girl's Catholic School called Our Lady of Angels Academy. That opened in September of 1858. It was 4 times as big as this one and sat on the hilltop of 10 acres with outside tennis & basketball courts! When they closed they sold it to the Northside Church of God. When we moved to Ohio the Church sold it to another Church but sadly this beautiful elaborate building ended up being torn down in the early 1980s. It had over 100 bedrooms all together between the 3rd & 4th floors. There were living quarter apartments built on the 1st & 2nd floor. The wood work and stair cases was breath taking! It had huge a dining hall, 2 chapels, an indoor gymnasium, a bell and steeple where we would go and sit outside on the roof ledge and look over the city. It had a tube slide fire escape on the side of the building with doors at the end of every hall that tied into it. I can't count how many times we'd go up to the 4th floor and hit the fire escape doors to slide down the fire escape. It was Amazing! It had another building behind it that was the administration building for the school. The church turned into a house for the church parsonage. There was tunnels in the basement going all over underneath the School and one led to the church parsonage. I have the BEST memories ever living on those 10 acres. Our church hosted the First Church of God Youth Convention for the State of Iowa over the weekend one yr at Halloween. Kids from all over the State came and we made a surprise Haunted house for the unsuspecting youth groups that came in that was broke up into search parties to explore the school to try and find our youth group that was missing. Lol they were taken thru the tunnels and all over the 5 story building trying to find us that was laying in wait to scare them ending their tour riding the fire escape down from the 5th floor onto 10 acres of lurking monsters outside lol. Living on the 10 acres were my best teen memories ever!

I think this place is much more impressive from the outside, which I guess is true of a lot of places. It seems there was a lot there to look at though.

A study of America in microcosm: that two magnificent buildings like these could be left to rot shows how little we care about our collective heritage. We put our money into the wrong things; it should go towards something that endures vs the current black hole of people who simply take without contributing.

And that we build shoddy structures and let this amazing space go to waste. Who owns the property now? If the Catholic Church, they should be ashamed.

Absolutely beautiful place. All the woodwork, lead glass etc had such a grand look....shame it's going to waste....hopefully someone would salvage it...even the heaters. Shame they let it go....would've made a great place for homeless/battered women especially with kids so they could work and the kids would be off the streets. I'd be on that porch everyday especially during the rain.....have a cot out there....that's living 🕊️💜

This house would be an amazing place to convert to an independent living/retirement home. Here in my city, many old schools have been or are being renovated to provide senior housing. It's good for them and puts abandoned schools back into use and on the tax rolls. You two are becoming real cat whisperers! I'm glad that Ruby is there with you. Her presence and loving energy are wonderful I'm these empty places. That's probably why the lonely kitties are attracted to her. This sanctuary may still belong to the local diocese. It's sad that they can't find a use for it. An empty Catholic church in our city was used as a secondhand shop by the Ladies of Charity until someone torched it. I don't know what will be done with it now. It was remarkably similar in construction and interior design to this one. Maybe there was a standard blueprint when they were built, back in the early 1900s. Thanks for an interesting explore, Kappy and Ruby. I almost expected Bing Crosby and Barry Maguire to come down those stairs, puffing their pipes while they discussed the sermon for this week's mass! I thoroughly enjoyed this explore and am looking forward to many more. I can't stop thinking about that Arts and Crafts beauty we saw a couple of weeks ago. That house made me cry. Keep up the great work and take good care of each other.

It looks like it WAS a retirement home. Now it's all over. It would cost a LOT to heat the the place.

@@clairwaucaush7225 Thats why the occupants pay to live live there, heating costs would be calculated into those costs. Divided by over 100 residents, probably wouldn't be to harsh. It was HEATED before.

Beautifully built! If it was an old age home it definitely had more charm than to end up living in a building that looks more like a hospital.

So sad, but you are right. People are not going to church as much as they used to so the churches don’t bring in as much money as they used to. I also wonder if there has been mismanagement of money in the churches; many churches in the big industrial cities have been abandoned due to people moving because there was no longer work for them. Everything changes in such a fast moving society as ours. Every thing is about money and having more and more. We also have factories in other countries to avoid paying taxes which also affects our economy and workers. We know there is mismanagement of money in our big government. Money goes into individuals pockets.

It's hard to believe in a mere 20 years, so much of that roof would collapse so quickly. I wonder if that process didn't have help. And I wonder if a new, improved, 'modern' set up (bigger church enabling more collection plates for the congregation) wasn't built not too far away. In the old days, we thought very differently about the world. The stench of today's 'Isolate, Demonize, Domination, Destroy and Destruction' permeates through those old, gracious walls. It's all part of today's plan. The 'good old days' really were just that and it's something our leaders can't erase whilst evidence lingers.
