Went out to hunt for some porgies with @fishingtheatlantic and we found em! Non-stop porgy action in Jamaica Bay. We also got two simultaneous hookups on some BIG fish!
Porgies, also known as scup in New England, are a popular recreational fish found along the Atlantic coast from Nova Scotia to Florida, though rare south of North Carolina. They are recognized for their fine flavor despite being bony and are often caught during warmer months, with peak fishing in June. Porgies migrate seasonally, moving inshore in spring and summer and offshore in winter. They prefer hard bottoms and structures where they feed on invertebrates. Although typically small, they provide a strong fight when hooked, making them a favorite for anglers.
As of September 2024, the regulations for Porgy fishing in New York State are as follows:
Minimum size: 9.5 inches for shore-based anglers, and 10.5 inches for vessel-based anglers.
Daily possession limit: 30 fish for shore and vessel-based anglers from May 1 to December 31. 40 fish for anglers aboard licensed party or charter boats from September 1 to October 31.
Open season: May 1 through December 31 for recreational anglers
