Yeah, they're very stylistically coherent with the old ones, which is largely in keeping with how they've refreshed infantry ranges in 40k. To me though, these new sculpts do a lot to tone down the cartoony quality of the previous generation of Skaven models, which I wasn't a fan of.

I think they look much better, but in a horde of 20+ rats and small sizes you wont really notice that much of a difference in game

I really like the new Clanrats. This is exactly how a range refresh should be done: new models that look great, have no scale creep, and look reasonably similar to the older models. So you could mix old and new without it looking completely out of place. And mixing might be a great idea, since Skaven hordes are meant to look ragtag and disorganised anyway. The new sculpts adding some much needed dynamic poses is great, and they just look GOOD overall. Concerning the Great Horned Rat: it was ALWAYS a Chaos god. The change being that now it has risen to a level of power rivalling the other Big Four, and apparently that got acknoledged by them. Previously the GHR was just not seen as on their level of power and influence, and it will be interesting to learn the details of how that change happened.

Skaven are one hell of an army to start with. Don't be discouraged or intimidated. If you love hobby generally, Skaven offer lots and lots of it. who knows what 4th will bring but Skaven are a technical army that takes a few losses under your belt to understand them. You will be a verminlord in no time at all.

I think the slow role release is a good ploy from GW. If you start with all your fancy things everything else feels like an anticlimax. Also, as youve said in previous videos a lot of people are down because of the squatted minis. This gives people some space to breathe, allow that to settle and then get hyped for cool stuff that's coming.

And whilst the detail/dynamism's a decent boost on the old clanrats, also chuffed their scale/proportions remains closed enough that I can mix in minis and bits from my poor abandoned Island of Blood ratboys. ...unless I do the same thing with this box and leave them grey for a decade...

As a Lizardmen faithful I haven’t ever collected Skaven but my daughter has shown some interest in them. So we are going to make it a hobby project and I have to say I love these models. Old clan rats were a little funky for me but these have that modern touch unlike from the newer GW models. I can’t wait for her and I to paint these up.

I just now noticed that the GW painting studio has begun painting their rims black. Finally! As a wise man once said.. you can paint your bases any color, as long as they're black. And if the clanrats are this cool, I can't wait to see the new stormvermin!

I have 80 clanrats and am happy to add some of these new ratplacements to my army. However, I see no reason to replace what I already have so it’s more-more rats for me. Liking the latest leak from Games Workshop! They do like their little “accidents”, but it’s all part of the show now so happy to go along with it.

I really like how they are doing these reveals .. I like a slow burn for hype. Also love that the aesthetic hasn't changed but the new sculpts are super crisp.

I'm pleased you're getting Redwall vibes. For a long time the plastic Skaven (e.g. the Gutter Runners) gave me Wind in the Willows Weasel energy, which never felt right.

Glad to have more sculpt diversity for my rats. If you have a lot already just a few to scatter among the hordes is enough. I also think starting with the basic troop and building up is the right way to tease it out. If I’m going to paint 40-60 rats it’s important to be excited by that prospect! It’s easy to get excited about the greater daemon level sculpts because they have so much more to show off. That said I wonder what Great Horned Rat is the chaos god of? Skaven is meh. But the Chaos God of Invention that has some play for growing the faction out and supporting it into things like Slaves. (It also aligns with Vashtorr’s chaos god of tech in 40K, but is cooler.)

with the wide variety of sculpts in the new clan rats I see no reason why some of the old sculpts couldn't mix in to a unit. And I appreciate the not all skaven where painted the same. To me the notion of a kit master issuing the same clothes to everyone seems bonkers. They should all be different and dressed different. I plan on mixing these into my old models to increase the variety.

I love them so much. I like that you pointed out them looking like members of different clans - I've been painting my clan rats as a mishmash of different clans instead of one unified group. Having the sculpts reflect that is going to be awesome.

Cities are small but the one that got me was Ossiarch Bonereapers Mortek Guard - they’re the same size as cities of sigmar humans and therefore absolutely tiny compared to Stormcast!

This announcement has given me heaps of clarity around The Old World strategy with the non-core factions. I had thought that, to set up an eventual release in the old world for skaven, all the soon to come stuff would be renamed - orruks instead of orcs kinda stuff. But that hasn't happened here. We're only getting the odd new model for each faction in the old world, and they can't sell the old and new version of clan rats. Such a shame. They should have just been able to release all the old models, and just distinguish with packaging. I guess for something like skaven, other than availability, you could literally buy a full old world army from the store. Also, does SDS (forgeworld) have any plastic manufacturing capabilities? It makes so much sense why everything is metal or resin coming back other than the kits that had already become plastic. I wonder if the metal and resin old world stuff will be easier to get than the plastic stuff because SDS has to fight for plastic machine time?

I love their new design. Its a sharper grimdark compared to their previous softer more goofy design that I really think thye need. Much like the Termaguant that was revealed first for the Nids before 10th ed 40k, these new Clan Rats should set the bar for whats to come in the new refresh. I cant wait too see some of the more elite unts and leader models

I really like they they kept to the theme well enough that you could mix in the island of blood era clanrats and have it look coherent. It's a nice option for those of us who get twitchy about duped sculpts, which can be a problem if you're runing 60 odd of the same unit.

For me, the improvement in clan rats is huge. If they had kept the old sculpt, i probably would not have bought into skaven, but with these new sculpts, i am super keen to start a skaven army

I think, as long as the Clanrats are around the same size as the current models we have I think it will be really cool to have the dynamic poses intermixed with the static old poses as reinforcements for all the models we can reinforce now. As for amounts, I’m sure we will get 40 Clanrats in the box to make up for the fact they will give Skaven less points in the starter box to give Stormcast a bit of an edge right off the bat

I like the slow burn releases. I was able to resist Leviathan last year through channeling every iota of will power I possess. There was enough time to digest the hype before it was released. This time though they seem to be timing the hype to a crescendo at just the right time for me to buy a box set I absolutely don't need but want so badly 😅

New clanrats are aggressively… fine. I am definitely in no hurry to pick them up and add them to my collection. But they won’t look out of place interspersed with the rest of my current clanrats. If buy exactly as many as happen to be included in the launch box.

Verminlords are WAY OLDER than the end times. They are 4th Ed old and were removed from play in 6th edition. And yes, they are the greater demons of the Horned Rat. In the really ancient lore the HR even had demon princes

I curriently have 40 clanrats so getting and painting Up 20 more works for me. escpecially if the new rats look this rad, plus I generall do not have a problem with putting older models next to new models on the table. Also it looks like the new clanrats have the same basesize as the old ones, so no rebasing which is nice.

Undoubtedly nice sculpts. I'm still in the camp that says Clanrats shouldn't be so complicated. You're going to be painting dozens and dozens of these guys. Making them super detailed just gives more work, to models that have an average on-board life expectancy of one round.

My answer to your question about putting 200 painted clanrats aside for the new ones: Well, I've been collecting Skaven since Clanrats were all monopose and super ugly. But, some of the newer ones are quite decent looking. And there is a huge variety of them already. The Clanrats that come with the Isle of Blood boxset are also unique .. in my opinion, the only models from skaven that really didnt need a refresh, was the clanrats. Partially because anybody who collects Skaven already has more then they will ever be able to field in a game (just because GW keeps throwing 40 in every boxset available to pretend we're getting value) ... But also because they are not that bad. The bright side is, we are really looking for some improved other sculpts .. which means when we buy the boxset, we can focus on the other stuff and leave the Clanrats aside for awhile. Which is kind of a nice feeling, putting the initial effort into cooler bigger things. And then maybe one day when bored, putting together the Clanrats. Because any true Skaven lover, appreciates quantity. The only thing that feels more 'Skaven' then a shelf full of 200 Painted Clanrats ... is a shelf full of 240 painted Clanrats :)

RE: Old rat standard bearer: This model is a double entendre. He is old because he is ancient. The word "Ancient" derives from the latin "signifier" which was a standard bearer of the roman cohort. Which was later evolved into "ensign" which was bastardized into "ancien", thus "ancient". So while we recognize the word to mean "old" nowadays, it originally meant, quite literally, standard bearer. So, it is a word play made manifest, by giving the clan standard to be bore by an old "ancient" rat. He is double ancient. Ancient ancient. Yes yes.

The rumored release date is last weekend of June. That's almost three months from now. 80 days. And they insist on having a thing every single day. It's not sustainable unless you part everything out into literal breadcrumbs.

I try not to speedpaint/contrast paint Warhammer miniatures due to how expensive they are, but when i think of painting maybe 60 rats... maybe i'll just paint the leader in a detailed manner and the rest with basic colours and speed paints

I think the middle skaven soldier might be a stormvermin. In TWW 3 they can use sword and shields and that model looks a lot like the old stormvermin but with a shield. Also that skaven in particular doesnt look like th eother ones at all

Skaven should have the Beastmen thing of having units from the other chaos gods (Nurgle+Pestilens, Slaanesh+Eshin, Khorn+Moulder and Tzeentch+Skyre). Unfortunately Beastmen feel like a second thought so probibly be moved to The Old World and cut from AOS.

I dont understand them saying "clanrats moved to legends. Then "look new clanrats" so all those 100 or so units moving to 'legends'/ retiring are just getting new kits (in clanrats case looking exact-the-same) ((in stormcast liberators case, looking s little skinny))? Wth?
