My hometown of Miami as a burgeoning foodie capital, with its unique location and so many diverse cultures making the city what it is. And one thing that’s never in short supply here is seafood! Come with me as I have endless seafood and go on a fish market tour in Miami, Florida!
Today, I’d be linking up with my fellow Miami foodie Kiko to go on a tour and have an outrageous seafood extravaganza at Fresh Florida Fisheries, an amazing fish market and kitchen in town. It’s stone crab season, which is a South Florida specialty!

Inside, I met the owner, Ozzie, who showed us a frozen hogfish and took it into the back to de-scale and clean it. I had scales flying all over me! Then they fry it with no batter! Next, we saw the stone crab claws. They crack them for you!
You can buy whatever you want from the market and they’ll cook it for you in the kitchen! They have tons of different types of fish, shrimp, conch, lobster, and more. We watched them cook up the minuta fish and fry the hogfish.
They also made conch fritters and put the butterflied minuta (or yellowtail) in a sandwich.
At our table, we had jumbo, large, and medium stone crab claws; the fried hogfish; lobster croquetas, conch fritters, fried shrimp, tostones (fried plantains), and the minuta sandwich.
The knuckle meat of the stone crab claws is so succulent and buttery. It’s so sweet and tasty. It’s a South Florida tradition to eat them on New Years. The smaller the claw, the more shell you’ll get, and the less meat you’ll get. I loved them with the mustard sauce!
Then, we jumped on the lobster croquetas, which are crispy and full of lobster meat. The creamy sauce made it even better. Next were the conch fritters! Not everyone does them well; a lot of people make them with too much breading and not enough conch. These were great!
After that, we had the fried shrimp with the cocktail sauce. They were fresh and succulent, and crispy without being overcooked. The creamy mustard sauce was outstanding with them.
Then, we jumped on the tostones, which are flat, fried plantain fritters. They’re crunchy, salty, with a little bit of beer batter. We followed that with the minuta sandwich. The fish is so amazing. My favorite sandwiches in the world are fish sandwiches.
It was perfectly fried and the fish had a perfect amount of seasoning. The fish still has the tail on it. Kiko held it by the tail for me to eat, Lady and the Tramp-style! It was so good. Even the crunchy tail is edible. It’s so briny and crunchy, like chicharron!
Finally, we got to the finale: a 3.5-lb fried hogfish. The skin comes out so crispy and the meat is still flaky. They score and slice the fish before they fry it, which makes the meat come off in segments, almost like fish steaks. It’s only seasoned with salt and is incredible! It tastes almost like lobster!
Best of all, you can eat all parts of it, including the head, the throat, and more. It’s so sweet and juicy! But crunching into the tail was amazing. I had never done that before, but I loved it! A fish this size will cost you about $45 or $50, but it’s worth it!
What a seafood overload! I am stuffed!
