Not trying to overly glorify the job, but I can tell you from talking to him and general feelings of the crews... those boys care. Anyways, I was slated for the a direct hit originally, and I live in a mobile home. I did not sleep for 3 days worrying about it. Enough about me... Thank him for me! These crews are just absolutely flying! My power was back by Friday evening and that was with 3 broken poles in a row in the space of 2 blocks. Compared to Andrew and Charlie they are pulling off miracles. The latest local news and updates say that structures that can receive power will be energized between 85 to 90% by Saturday. That doesn't include Sanibel, Fort Myers Beach or Pine Island. They can get the needed equipment to Fort Myers Beach but there is so little left that they won't be rushing it. The other two have bridges out so access is by boat or helicopter only.

Bluegabe, here's something you may appreciate about hurricanes since you're a native Floridian. My dad was born in Miami in March of 1926. In September of that year a major hurricane hit Miami. My dad's dad took his family from his wood house inland into the saw palmettos. There he gathered them into a large thick tall patch and tied them individually to the roots of the palmettos. My dad was put into a small metal tub which was tied down to the palmetto's as well. Then all were covered with a canvas tarp which also was tied to the palmettos . That is how they road out a major hurricane with winds of 150 mph back on that day in 1926. They all survived. Having been born in Miami myself hurricanes are part of living in Florida and always have been. I have been through many and when one is coming you board up and leave or ride it out. If you're in an area that is prone to flooding because of the storm surge then you leave. Each hurricane is different in strength so you need to be smart. There is no excuse today for anyone to die from a hurricane with such early warning except for those who refuse to take them serious. I guess the bottom line is if you live in Florida you will deal with a hurricane sooner of later, it's up to you to survive it. That's just the way it is.

I want to share a handy tip I learned from my grandfather. He had a farm that he spent two thirds of the year on, so there were times that it was unoccupied for a good length of time. The farm was in an area that sometimes the power would be off for a good while. So you often wondered if the food you left in the freezer had thawed and refrozen without your knowledge and could cause you to get sick. What you do is fill a water bottle about a 1/4 full with water and the put it in the freezer on its side. Once frozen you then put water bottle sitting up so the water is only frozen on one side and is standing up. If, when you come after being away, the ice is no longer frozen standing up but is now frozen on the bottom, you know that the food is questionable.
@rumblechick73
@rumblechick73 Жыл бұрын
My favorite trick for this is similar. Freeze a glass of water standing up, after it's frozen put a coin on top of it, when you come back if the coin is still on top, the food is fine, if it's down a little, some things might be questionable, if it's on the bottom throw out everything.

Thanks Bluegabe for telling our story. We’re in Englewood and it’s bad. 3 huge trees down. Limbs of 2 of them went thru the roof plus half roof ridge vent gone. Drywall ceilings came down in 3 rooms. No power, electric or internet. No gas stations working for miles to the north of us. Sewerage treatment plant destroyed. When water & electric do come back on we still can’t flush toilet. Maybe for weeks or even months. Building a makeshift outhouse in the bushes also shower. The whole area is forever changed. We’re close to Lemon Bay. Fish were in the streets. Snakes finding dry ground. The gators have much more areas to room. Clumps of floating fire ants are definitely..by far the worst thing to run into when wading through the water.

Thanks Gabe! Here in NC we’re almost in the hurricane zone as bad y’all are, it sometimes seems to be an exercise in futility but we love where we live and will push forward. Don’t pass judgement on to those who didn’t leave and don’t pass accountability on to the BS media, most of us are grown ups and made the decision for ourselves and our families. Just need to push ahead bro.

I definitely feel their pain. I lost about everything because of Harvey in 2017 here on the Texas coast It is devastating. Do whatever you can Gabe. God bless you Brother and thanks for getting the word out. Florida is a Beautiful state and the biggest part of that is because of times like these. Everyone pulls together. Just like our Great state of Texas. We al pull together and do whatever we can to help out our neighbors and family. I feel your pain and wanting to help and I Will. You folks are so Blessed with a Governor that knows he has your back. God Bless the Great state of Florida and God Bless you Gabe. ❤

As a Health and Safety rep, I can tell you that you never get fans to dry out the drywall, it has to be torn down. You may know this already, but once drywall gets wet the backside, insulation will create black mould which is deadly. My last home for six months difficulty breathing, only to find out they so,d the house to us with a crack down the foundation. Black mole was growing as they use covered it up drying it out to show it. I am so sorry you went through this, it has hit our province, lost people to the ocean, no power, part of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, PEI, New Brunswick, with houses, cars, trees, gone, or ripped apart. We were lucky as not right on the coast but 15 minutes East got it bad. This will take years to fix as Insurance changed all the policies, no longer covering floods, unless you pay huge money and even that is limited

@Bluegabe we live in Bonita Springs.. we lost our home and all of our worldly possessions. Thankfully we are safe. Our communities are struggling and there is a large number of displaced people. Thanks for creating this video and raising awareness. If y'all can, people here need clothes, socks, shoes, food, a place to sleep, ICE is HUGE for those without power. We also just need hands to help clean debris. Thanks Gabe for the help!

@@brandenfindley5467 no I hate it but, they will talk a put ian like they talk about andrew forever. I was listening to the newscasters and they talked about Irma and Andrew etc. Non stop never a mention of Michael. My gf was in Lynn haven when it hit and I was there three days later and didn't leave for over year basically. It's ridiculous that the nation as a whole just let it slip from memory except for the pics from Mexico Beach and the one house that didn't get blown down

I'm in Southwest Florida and and the flooding almost almost got into our house, but the wind was the worst part for us. We had trees blow down all around us. Including a 25" diameter pine tree that laid over on our roof. Luckily the root ball was still holding a lot of the weight and we had to pay a tree company to get it off our roof with minimal damage to the roof actually just lost some shingles and needs to be repaired. We also lost our fencing around our pool , but I rebuilt that after Irma and now I had to do it again. But we are very lucky and thank God for keeping us safe. I was born and raised here and have a lot of family history here. 5th generation Floridian

I remember when Katrina happened. I live in north Louisiana and we had people that evacuated and came to stay in our town. At the time I worked for one of the big insurance companies and we assisted lots of people from down south with their insurance claims. Of course not much could be done at the time bc nobody could go back to their homes yet. Best to get those claims going as quickly as possible if you know what your damage is already. You can’t report what you don’t know though. People made fun of me keeping my little flip phone for so long but I did so bc it worked so well when others didn’t get good reception but I always did get good service. I was the only one in our entire office that had a phone with service and I allowed our customers to call whoever they needed to call. People couldn’t believe I still had service. I couldn’t either. Since I had to work I couldn’t take off and go down south to help out with clean up but I could allow people that needed to make calls to use my old flip phone that my family had made such fun of! I’ll be watching your videos to find out how people that want to donate can help out.
