Very good! Thanks for cautioning others about the copy feature. Analysis is the key and researching the potential relationship yourself. Great video!

Like all “clues”, you must follow the clue and verify bit of info all along the way. By doing this, I have found that most, but not ALL thru lines are correct.

Absolutely - they are heavily dependent on the family trees of your DNA matches, some of which may be incorrect.

I have to agree. I have found most “ThruLines”, but not all, are correct. In comparison to MyHeritage where I have found their “Theory of Relativity” to be mostly incorrect. I guess they are using different data to form their conclusions.

Another great use is for checking for possible errors in your own tree. For example, if you have a set of 3x Grandparents who are documented as having 9 children that survived to adulthood but you have no DNA matches at all with their descendants, it could be that you are really unlucky and no one else has tested, OR that perhaps they are not your 3x Grandparents after all. Similarly if you only had matches with a female ancestor and the generations above her but none for her husband’s ancestors, then it could be there was another man involved (possibly an earlier marriage or a NPE).

Great video. I have noticed that in my ThruLines hints sometimes the green dotted line boxes are already in my tree ( and sourced ) and should be colored white in my ThruLines hint. That provokes me to click the add button to turn the ThruLines green box to white. Do you see any problem doing that ?

That happens a lot and often it is an indicator that there are differences between the two people which need to be addressed. You do have to be careful not to add the same person twice which could happen. If there are minor differences and you (or your match) can correct them so that both people are identical the give ThruLines time to catch up. It could be something as simple a date written in a different way. So look carefully

How many DNA matches would be enough to consider that a branch of a thruline is correct or can be validated? For instance, in your case from the video, your potential grand uncle has 3x DNA matches descending from his branch ... Would those 3x DNA matches be enough to make you believe that the green/grand uncle branch is another child of your great-grand parents? Because I imagine that a branch with only 1x DNA match is probably too weak to be validated as compared with a branch that has 10x DNA matches, which possibly would have too many matches to deny any relationship?

Great question - a DNA match is proof of a relationship but does not define the type of relationship that has to be done via research. So if all of 10 matched DNA are showing the same type of relationship (say 3rd cousin) then that is something you can research further but what if all 10 matches had copied each other trees (perfectly possible in Ancestry) and added in an incorrect named relative? You may think that this is a new person in your tree when in fact it is the same person you have but they have the wrong name. Does that make sense? So yes the more matches the merrier but I would still would want to confirm with my own traditional research.

If I understand your question, the number of matches is directly proportional to the number of testers as long as your records and sources match. Also you should consider each match relation to the other matches, ( not just you ).
