The score in this scene is incredible. It passionately conveys the sentiments of conflict in Aubrey’s mind and heart. Does he go for the Acheron? Or do what he knows is right and take the actions to save the life of their ship’s beloved doctor? Aubrey understands that he has the Acheron in his sights for the taking but feels zealously conflicted with the wounding and close-to-death status of his dear friend. He understands that saving his life wasn’t just critical to the survival of his men as the ship’s surgeon, but to their overall morale of the crew also. He gave up the prize for the good of what was right even if it costed him his ordered goal of taking The Acheron from his commanders above him. That not only takes guts, but an immense amount of pride and sense of duty.

It's a bit more complicated than that, unfortunately. That marine was an officer, a Captain of Marines, likely either a nobleman or well-connected to have been able to purchase/gotten his commission, and was the commanding officer of the ship's Marine detachment. There is literally almost no chance that he would have ever been flogged for what happened. Hanged or shot, maybe, after a suitable tribunal, but certainly not a tribunal conducted by the ship's captain aboard that same ship. Had Captain Aubrey had him flogged, you can be sure that it is highly likely that Captain Aubrey would have been censured, or possibly even relieved, upon reaching England.
@Swarm509 Жыл бұрын
@@vishnu79 If I recall the Captain of the Marines was basically the same rank as the Captain of the ship, and nearly as important. He couldn't take over a Navy Captains role and would follow his orders as commander of the ship, but he commanded a powerful force on said ship with the Marines who directly followed his orders. Either way he could be punished, but it would have to wait till they are back in England....
@vishnu79 Жыл бұрын
@@Swarm509 Well, yes, and no. The (Naval) Captain of a ship is more of a title, than a rank. For example, one could rank as a Commander, but still be the ship's Captain, as in, the most senior Naval officer in the direct chain of command of that particular vessel. A Captain of Marines is a very specific rank. Now traditionally (and it is done in the film, as well, I might add) a ship can only have one man with the title of "Captain", whatever his rank, and so, other persons that might have a rank of "Captain" such as the Captain of Marines, is temporarily given (this is called being "brevetted") the next higher rank in their organization, in this case the rank of "Major". Rank conventions aside, a Marine officer will TECHNICALLY ALWAYS be outranked by a Naval Officer so long as that Marine is stationed onboard the Naval Officer's ship, and the Naval Officer is the Captain. You could have a Brigadier General of Marines onboard a ship, and if the ship's Captain happens to be ranked as a Lieutenant, then that Lieutenant will ALWAYS outrank that General, so long as they are aboard the Lieutenant's ship. Those are the rules. However, we then come to that thing that makes everything built by Man work, namely, politics. The General MIGHT be outranked by the Lieutenant aboard ship, but if the General wants to do something, let's say he happens to want to come onto the Lieutenant's bridge, he'll politely ask for permission before doing so, thus showing deference to and respect for, the Lieutenant's position and title (but NOT the Lieutenant's RANK). A wise Lieutenant, however, would NEVER think of denying the General's request, even though he has the right to do so, and might not want to talk to the General at that moment, because the General is undoubtedly connected to the overall military hierarchy and organization at a MUCH higher level than he is, and can cause a LOT more problems for him, even if only indirectly. The General in the situation as described above cannot (under most circumstances) give orders to the Lieutenant, and a smart General will not try, but he CAN and WILL give "advice" if he think's it's called for. A smart Lieutenant will carefully listen to, and give good consideration to, any "advice" the General may happen to give, even if he doesn't really have to, according to the rules. The Lieutenant may ultimately decide to disregard the General's advice, but a smart Lieutenant will ALWAYS at least make it look like he gave some thought to whatever the General said. Because appearances matter. Now this plays into what we see in the movie not so much because there is any question as to whether or not Captain Aubrey has the right and authority to have the Marine Captain/Major flogged. He actually does, and could do that. It's just that Captain Aubrey would NEVER give that order, and any man that had made it to the rank of Commander (which is Captain Aubrey's actual rank) and had been given a ship (and thus the title of Captain) to command would know better than to even imagine doing so under anything but the most dire of circumstances. Because of politics.

I love how Stephen slowly collapses after Mr. Howard shoots him and then Mr. Howard figures out fairly quickly that something's gone wrong and goes to check on Stephen and then Jack comes along as well and has Higgins sent for. They don't show how long it took to get Stephen below, but the level of detail that went into him looking poorly after the shooting, including him sweating and Padeen hovering over him was very well done. Higgins was not very confident. I wouldn't have wanted him as my assistant. He doesn't come out and say he's not confident, but you get it when he says that he has to study the doctor's books to get his bearings. Jack doesn't change expression, but you can tell that he's not best pleased with what Higgins just said. I also love how Higgins is sitting next to Stephen's hammock and studying the book. The makeup department did a great job in making Stephen look pale and sickly the further out from the shooting he was. The addition of the musical theme that Stephen and Jack played at the beginning of the movie was very well done, too and the way Jack is in his cabin looking at the cello or whatever the instrument is that Stephen plays. I also love how Jack smiles at Stephen when they're taking him to his tent after they go ashore.
