In this fishing video, we once again played live tamban using a carolina rig method. It was nonstop frenzy for 2-3 hours playing in the rain. We kept catching plenty of pelagic fishes & it was overall a fun experience. The sizes were absolutely phenomenal & it was an exciting session.
About the fishes caught:
The Stonefish: A Master of Deception in the Depths
Hidden among the ocean's rocks and coral reefs, the Stonefish (Synanceia) is a true marvel of evolutionary adaptation and a creature that commands both respect and fear. Renowned for its ability to camouflage seamlessly with its surroundings and deliver a potent venomous sting, the Stonefish is a remarkable marine species that has captivated the interest of scientists, divers, and enthusiasts alike.
Masters of Camouflage:
The Stonefish is a true master of disguise. Its name is derived from its incredible ability to blend in seamlessly with the rocky and coral environments it inhabits. The fish boasts a mottled appearance with various shades of brown, gray, and sometimes green, effectively mimicking the colors and textures of the ocean floor. This camouflage not only helps the Stonefish avoid predators but also allows it to patiently wait for unsuspecting prey to pass by.
Venomous Spines:
One of the Stonefish's most notorious features is its venomous dorsal spines. These spines, typically 13 in number, are sharp and capable of injecting a potent venom when pressure is applied. The venom is a mix of neurotoxins, myotoxins, and cardioactive toxins, making it a highly effective defense mechanism against predators and a formidable tool for capturing prey.
Potent Venom:
The venom of the Stonefish is among the most powerful found in the animal kingdom. It can cause intense pain, tissue necrosis, and, in extreme cases, even death. Immediate medical attention is crucial in the event of a sting, as anti-venom treatments are available to counteract the effects of the toxins. Despite its dangerous reputation, fatal encounters with Stonefish are relatively rare due to timely medical intervention.
Habitat and Range:
Stonefish are primarily found in the Indo-Pacific region, inhabiting shallow coastal waters and coral reefs. They prefer locations with ample hiding spots among rocks and crevices where they can remain concealed while awaiting prey. Their range includes the coasts of Australia, the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean.
Feeding Behavior:
Stonefish are ambush predators, relying on their exceptional camouflage to patiently wait for prey to come within striking distance. Once a suitable target approaches, the Stonefish rapidly strikes, engulfing the prey with its large mouth. Their diet consists of small fish and invertebrates, and their feeding strategy relies on surprise and lightning-fast reflexes.
Unusual Locomotion:
Stonefish exhibit a unique form of locomotion known as "jet propulsion." Using their pectoral fins, they can expel water forcefully, propelling themselves a short distance across the ocean floor. This method of movement is employed for both hunting and evading potential threats.
The Longfin Trevally: A Silver Speedster of the Open Seas
The Longfin Trevally (Carangoides armatus), a sleek and powerful fish, roams the open seas, showcasing impressive swimming abilities and an elegant silver sheen. As a member of the jack family (Carangidae), the Longfin Trevally has earned its place as a prized species among anglers and a fascinating subject of study for marine enthusiasts.
Diet and Feeding Habits:
Longfin Trevallies are voracious predators, preying on a variety of smaller fish, crustaceans, and squid. They are known for their exceptional speed and agility, allowing them to chase down swift prey with ease. Their hunting prowess is enhanced by their keen eyesight and the ability to coordinate attacks with other members of their school.
Social Behavior:
Longfin Trevallies are typically found in schools, a behavior that serves multiple purposes. Schooling provides protection against predators, enhances hunting efficiency, and aids in reproduction. The synchronized movements of a school of Longfin Trevallies are a mesmerizing spectacle, a ballet of silver precision in the open ocean.
Sport Fishing Appeal:
Anglers appreciate the Longfin Trevally for its strong and spirited fights. Its size, speed, and acrobatic maneuvers make it a sought-after target for sport fishermen. Angling for Longfin Trevallies requires skill and patience, as these fish are known for their ability to make powerful runs and sudden changes in direction.
