That card game analogy is perfect, incredibly instructive. I play a lot of trading card games, and a lot of the strategic concepts of chess do carry over. Timing, move order, passive vs active, real threats vs empty threats, etc.

Yesterday I had the same position as white after 4... Qh4. I stupidly played 5 g3! Afterwards I analysed my game and the best move for white is 5 Be3. Daniel played Qf3 which is probably the second best. 5 Bxf7 is another alternative. After 5.. Kxf7, you can play 6 Qd5+ Ke8 and 7 g3 and pick up the knight after the queen has moved.

This one was more Daniel's opponent trying to get in an easily-stopped f2 mate at any cost. They could've just played the game but instead end up throwing away all their pieces trying to force a checkmate that wasn't happening.
