Hi Daniel, Ive recently got back into chess after not playing for a couple years and when i stopped my rating was about 1400. Now I started going to my chess club again and playing the occasional sunday tournament and in my 2 classical games so far Ive drawn against a 1900 and won against an 1800. This improvement definitely comes from having watched a TON of your videos recently and your way of explainings complex things in a simple and understandable way is truly amazing. I remember watching this video as it came out years ago. Now im a much stronger player. Initially i hadnt realized how much stuff about the endgame you had taught me. But now as I watch this video again I casually come up with a very similar technique you showed with the bishop and rook endgame. Rd7 was very intuitive for me in seeing that we had to defend the rook and the bishop with the critical follow up of Rc7. Years ago I never wouldve seen that. Now its intuitive. Thank you again danya for all your wisdom.

I reckon this was only because of time left on the clock to be fair. Danya had less than 10 seconds with no increment to mate. A 2100 shouldn't ever really fail this, but under pressure, a stalemate isn't impossible. Only cost him a few seconds just to try.

I think it's worth mentioning that at 29:05, ... h6 is the third legal move. While the resultant position looks similar to ... g4 (after say 1. ... h6 2. Kf3 g4+ 3. Kf4 g3 4. Kxg3 Kg5) , the key difference is that now the pawn is on h6 instead of h7, which means white king is able to spend one less move capturing the pawn, and is now in time to hurry back and stop the a pawn from promoting. Crazy how a seemingly indifferent pawn move can completely change the course of the game.

Hell yeah, I saw the need to block the A pawn early, and saw the usefulness of h6 so that you kept an extra pawn during the game immediately. I was wondering if you’d go over the A5 line and h6 line and you did to my pleasant surprise

These speed runs are so educational and entertaining. Maybe a twist next would be to incorporate opening theory as you go. For example - maybe a 1000 level would only work though a few mains lines for 4 or 5 moves but as you move up you dig in deeper. Just a thought. Great stuff. Thx.

He pretty much plays whatever theory he knows. Most of the time his opponent deviates. After however many moves, if he were to choose to deviate, he would be playing suboptimally.

If there are some takeaways from what I learned so far from danya its: know opening theory (good openings) inclding the concepts. Try to induce weaknesses, restrict openent peices from getting to good squares. Look at how you can exploit weak squares to your advantage use puzzels to improve tactical/stretegic awareness. In endgames look at weak pawns and work out how to place king & pieices to exploit that. Exchange when you have material adantage usually.

I somehow really enjoy the dragondorf structures in the dragon move order against the yugoslav. So, e4-c5-Nf3-d6-d4-cxd4-Nxd4-Nf6-Nc3-g6-Be3-Bg7-f3-a6-Qd2-h5-0-0-0-b5....following up with Bb7-Nbd7-Rc8 and usually Ne5 and Nc4. Would be cool, if you could try this in speedrun or video. What was wrong with h6 at 18:27? The point about freezing the pawns in their end is good if it's an even pawn battle on the other end but here your pawns will win the battle if h6 is played (I checked the engine after the video).

At 6:40, I would have played f5 in this position. The f pawn prevents bishop e4 for white and the e pawn can’t be taken because black can play bishop e4, which blocks the white rook from going back, attacks white’s bishop, and allows for the rooks on the c file to see each other. White cannot sacrifice a rook to escape the mate threats, rook to e8 can be taken, or even better, have the king moved near the rook, and the black rooks are on open files and still threaten mate, with the bishop and other rook still being attacked, rook takes e4 by white allows for mate in 2 by taking the rook on c1, which means that white is forced to at least lose a bishop if they take the e pawn. If white does not take the e pawn, they are still in a bad position, rook takes c2, sacking the exchange, is possible, but doesn’t help white’s position in any way, since the other white rook is stuck to the back rank to prevent mate, and the white bishop has very limited movement. This means that the only decent options white will really have after f5 is playing a waiting move with a rook, bishop, or a pawn (the rook and bishop moves don’t really help white’s position), moving a pawn near the white king is what I think is best, to avoid potential back rank mate threats, the rooks also cannot leave the back rank, since that would worsen the position for white. I would play g3 as white(after black’s f5) since that allows the white bishop to be able to retreat near the king, while also preventing mate. This is just how I would play since it feels more powerful, but that’s just me, the move Daniel played is probably just as good or better.

Something I notice a lot while Danya climbs the ratings is the opponents' clocks. Lower rated players always had a lot more time on their clocks, but now the games are a lot more even. That goes for me too, need to stop playing blitz and think a bit more every move.
