When you want to paste an object on the same location of the original object, try pressing “Ctl(Command) + C” and then “Ctl (command) + F (means “front”)”.

If you use the Divide tool under the Pathfinder menu, you can save a lot of time on splitting your larger object into small pieces, without needing to keep copying and pasting lines and joining them to make solid pieces.

Wow. I just tried that. Maybe it is an upgrade since this video was produced. I really like it a lot. Now I want Adobe to fix the need to measure along a curve without having to buy VectorScribe.

@@PatternLabLondon That makes sense. This was the only one of your tutorials I'd seen at the time because a seamstress friend had shown it to me, and when I told her about the divide tool, she insisted I mention it here, just in case.

Also you can use the line tool to draw a line from outside the pattern to the bust point and then select both pattern outline and the line you drew and then pathfinder divide. You just have to make sure you use the small selection tool to move the end of the line segment to the center of the bust point. I use the ellipse tool for bust point so that I can always see the exact center.

Brilliant tutorial. You really need to contact Bluprint to do a class on pattern making in illustrator. You could expand on your KZbin offerings there in a paid platform. I ordered a pattern lab bodice block and am excited to see your expanded sloper offerings in the future. Have you tried the offset path tool as an alternative method for adding seam allowances? If so it would be great to see a video about when you would use one technique versus the other. Thanks for sharing. Sandy

Learned some new techniques so thank you for sharing. Did you know if you clicked ‘paste in place’ your lines will appear on top of the original. Saves you having to move the new copied line back to the original location of the line you just copied.

@@PatternLabLondon Actually it is best to do a Paste in Front (Ctrl F) when you copy and want it perfectly on top. Another thing to try is to use the Shape Builder tool to easily divide up the panels.

These tutorials are great! I was just a bit confused about one part. At 20:28 when you rotated the bottom back piece, would it be good to have already snipped the grain line and grouped it so it would rotate with the whole piece, ensuring that it is at the correct angle in the end? I rewatched several times and I believe you got it angled back correctly, however I was not 100% sure....

You could certainly do that. There are a number of ways to amend patterns in Adobe Illustrator. My way is not always the easiest for everyone. I would say find a method that works for you and stick with it. Experiment! Good luck with your project!

Love your tutorials! Exactly what I was looking for and the way you tell the story is captivating :) a quick question: is there a way to bring in a PDF pattern that I own and edit it accordingly?
@PatternLabLondon
@PatternLabLondon 2 жыл бұрын
You should be able to. As long as it is editable. Also, depending on how the PDF was generated it might open with clipping masks applied to it. This can hide a lot of the pattern, especially if it was saved as a multi-page PDF. Google clipping mask and release the pattern. Or… select the whole pattern, right click and press release clipping mask. You might have to do this a few times as individual elements might have their own clipping mask. Good luck!

This course is more of an illustrator tutorial rather than a pattern making tutorial. Im having to skip through it as I am already savvy with the program. Will you be doing a course on the actual process of patterning a PDF pattern ?

How do you cut and rotate a block that has Princess seams?

You would need to rejoin the two princess panels and re-draw the darts to create a basic block that can then be manipulated. Hopefully that helps?
