Exactly. You are absolutely right. People see this, and automatically want to compare it to MMA, and make snide comments about you not being a neanderthal like them when they ground and pound with no self control of their actions. They've missed the whole point of this art. Bagua, in my opinion, is actually meant for gentleman during a warfare and for health.

Kind of reminds me of Capoeira, it requires excellent technique and is definitely an art form, but I have not seen it demonstrated effectively in any actual fight situation. Typically people that use these types of martial arts end up, abandoning their training during an actual fight pretty quickly.

I agree with you that Baguazhang and Capoeira are similar, and I am a person who studies boxing, karate, Muay Thai, and Capoeira, but I think Capoeira will make my fighting skills more comprehensive, and I want to learn Baguazhang to make Capoeira more effective.

@@23msp interesting approach, you’re going to use one style to fill gaps or “smooth out” aspects of the other fighting styles you study. I like that👍

Capoeira was developed to fight an opponent hand to hand during slavery in Brazil. Some people used it in early MMA matches too with success. Today, it is mostly mimicry, by participant who don't street fight at all. Who knows how much real combat was used by this bagua stuff? It is such a new art and it didn't develop out of a life or death fighting tradition. Modern practitioners just do it for fun and there is no tournaments to see what they would really do anyway. Ever hear of a Bagua guy stepping into the UFC and winning? Neither have I. No comparison between the two.
