Scarecrow is the most timeless and archetypal villain of the Dark Knight! It's a shame that he has not been given an iconic graphic novel like the Joker had with The Killing Joke! He definitely deserves to be the major Rogue in a future Batman animated and live action film. The fear hallucinations scenes could be showstoppers if done correctly! Let's hope that the Master of Fear's best stories and adaptation are yet to come!
@tayojones94606 жыл бұрын
Jared Santiago That is so unfair. Yes, crane had his moments but for the most part, he felt overshadowed by joker. They just couldn't keep joker out of the game could they? Despite That, scarecrow was still very popular in the Arkham series, especially in Arkham Asylum.

Yeah I see what you mean. I find it interesting that people kind of heckle scarecrow for using his gas too much even though pretty much all Batman villains have a standard m.o. As much as I love the joker if you think about it like 90% of his plans mostly involve either making large groups of people laugh to death or attack Batman's loved ones specifically.

The Scarecrow is my personal favorite Batman villain of all time so how could I not love a video like this. It's an excellent chronicle of both the the ups and downs of Jonathan Crane's tenure as the master of fear. I'd have to say my personal favorite version of the character is the one from the Arkham Games, that series truly did elevate the character into something special while also perfecting how he's supposed to be portrayed. I also enjoy the TAS and TDK trilogy versions of the character as well.

Arkham put together the best parts of Crane, in my opinion. Besides the Nightmare levels were awesome to play, I love the way he twisted what was going on in the real world into a horror dimension where he reigned supreme. I feel like that should be how it works in the comics as well. However I like his costume from the comics better. (Gotta love that wizard hat)

Geez I can't stop to love this character. My personal favourite villain; as I already said I would like to read a story in which he takes the control of A.A. and starts to experiment on all of the inmates. That would be the definitive story of the Scarcrow IMHO: taking his trademark, his gimmick, to the next level by doing what Batman never managed to do. Making them abbandon their own mad gimmicks with just fear. You know, mess up with all of the crazy people in Arkham for the first part of the story, while recording all of his "experiments" and sending their "results" to Batman, that would stop him for sure. For example: what about TwoFace unable to distinguish the Head from the Tail of his Coin and killing an innocent -like a kid- because of it. Or making the Riddler unable to solve even the most childish riddles by messing with his perception of them. And we would all think it was just for fun, cos he is a sadistic bastard. WRONG!!! The second part of the story would, Scarecrow would reveal this trickery to all of the Arkham inmates and then make all of them to confront Batman. After intoxicating them with his fear toxin, they would see Batman as the thing they fear the most in the world: THE SCARECROW, the master of fear himself. And during each fight, each confrontation, they would have to make a choice: respect their own gimmick or just kill "the Scarecrow" (Batman) at the first occasion. And all of them would forget their gimmick just to Kill that bastard of Crane - like Two Face ignoring his coin result (head, he lives) and just try to shot him. Or Nigma put in front of a riddlebox: he would be still not able to resolve it, with "Scarecrow(B)" tied in front of him and a gun into that dmnd box. And at the end Edward would just break the box by force and try to kill "Scarcrow", totally fucking off his gimmick. A "Terror/Shock therapy" for ALL of A.A. innmates. And, at the end, we would have Scarecrow, grinning to Batman and to all of Gotham City, with his final result: "I didn't just stop all of them with fear, as YOU, Batman, tried to do.... I CURED THEM!! I am the true MASTER OF FEAR". But that would not be the real epilogue: some time later, we would find Crane chased by a bunch of the rogues he tortured in A.A., and he would be saved by their rage by Batman , that would instead show him that what he did was just give them a NEW target: THE SCARECROW!!! Like a bunch of crows do with an actual scarecrow. Starting the story with Crane asking Batman for protection, from his "successfull experiments" and then showing the main plot by Batman and Scarecrow point of view. That would be both the Tryumph of the Scarecrow and the fall of him: showing that Arkham inmates aren't just "Mad people that need to be cured" (as he tried to do with his experiments) but also "Evil people that need to be stoped" (and that's something that Scarecrow is not able to do). He is indeed the master of fear, but what Gotham rogues need is not just "Fear". They need to be confronted by someone, to be stop both for their evilness and from their Madness. And only BATMAN can do that!!

BTAS and TNBA are what introduced me to Scarecrow, and many other of Batman's great villains, so those are my favorite versions of him. I do wish he was used more in BTAS, but I guess the voice actor for him was unavailable a lot of time, so he wasn't able to have a really really good episode in it. I also like quite a few of his comic appearances, mainly in Batman 296, which I think shows off his fear toxins the best out of any form of media. I really wish people would be as creative with the visuals of the toxins effects, as they were in that story. I also like him in the Arkham games, well at least asylum, but most of that comes from his tapes. I don't really like his design in that game personally, wish they made him look like his artwork for his in-game profile.
@mr.rogues41456 жыл бұрын
I was also introduced to him through TAS/TNBA - in fact that was the only version of Crane I knew for a very long time. I remember, after Batman & Robin came out, me and my friends all wanted Scarecrow to be in the next movie. We of course took for granted that there would be a next one (even though none of us really liked B&R) and Crane seemed like the logical next villain. In fact, I found it odd that they went to Ivy and Freeze before him. While I love the Arkham design, I agree, the profile artwork was also great. All the artwork on those profiles were execellent. Collecting them was a blast.

I have an idea for how they can portray Scarecrow and maybe improve his image as a threat. They should make him a supernatural villain in the Bat Rogues, have him use magic and sorcery in his haunting sprees. I mean, all the other major rogues are either scientist, doctors, or crimelords, but nothing really bordering on the more mystic side of things, i mean this is Gotham for crying out loud, put something dark and mysterious into fold. Heck, his great grandma certainly acted like a witch. Maybe in an alternate headcanon, he's from a family of witchcraft and he's a modern day warlock.

I'd just like to point out that the 'martial arts' aspect of Scarecrow did not, in fact, come from nowhere; it seems to me it was a conscious attempt to harken back to his earliest days, where he was, in fact, quite a legitimate physical threat - in his first encounter with Batman and Robin, he creams them! Of course, this was back before ol' Bats was established as one of the greatest fighters on Earth, but still, Crane being a weakling is more a legacy of the Silver Age than an ingrained and inescapable part of his character, it seems to me.

i think a good way to explore his potential is to try a version where his gaz have some reality-bending properties, allowing the hallucinations to become real and giving scarescrow actual powers. Maybe make him into a monster as well. There's room for experiment in terms of new versions of the character.

*rolls up to the comments a year later* Scarecrow's always been my favorite Rogue, and you're absolutely right - he was always just left of widespread fame up until the Arkham games. I've always preferred Asylum's design and Dino's performance (met him once, and he's an awesome guy) to Knight's and Noble's, just like I like Polic/BTAS' over Combs/TNBA's. Both of the latter are very creepy and cool, but the former have more character to me. You can imagine there being an actual person in the costume - a weird, twisted one, but a person - whereas the other two are more... Fear as a concept and feel more like plot devices and one-dimensional villains rather than fully formed characters. I also love Scarecrow: Year One; despite its internal inconsistencies, it's my favorite Crane origin story. It's got substance and cool art even if the writer can't remember where and when events took place between ONLY TWO ISSUES. Sorry. Lot of Scarecrow opinions. ANYWAY. Crane will actually be appearing in a new animated series this year! He's one of the few named characters cast for the Harley Quinn animated series on DCUniverse, and he'll be voiced by iZombie's Rahul Kohli. I'm hoping him being one of the few officially confirmed characters means he'll have a significant recurring role.
@mr.rogues41455 жыл бұрын
Long time no see ;) I had no idea Harley was even getting an animated series... not sure how I feel about that; she's even more overused then the Joker himself. Still, it'll be fun to see Crane in animation again, it's been quite a while.
@DoktorGirlfriend5 жыл бұрын
@@mr.rogues4145 Yeah, I think I feel better about it because more recently Harley's popularity is being used to introduce or utilize other characters, ie Margot Robbie using her star power to get new Batverse characters onto the big screen. And the Harley show is going to also include a good deal of the Rogues Gallery. The summary given so far says it's about Harley trying to join the Legion of Doom and getting other villains to help her. But yeah. I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing Crane's design.

OOH, this video was released on my birthday! HUZZAH! :D "[Don Messick's Scarecrow] kind of sounds like me, actually. Maybe that's why people keep saying I should voice Crane." (blinks...goes back and watches a Superfriends cartoon) ...Holy marbles, yeah, he actually sort of does. XD Actually, I've always had a fondness for the Superfriends Scarecrow, on that note; Messick's voice and the design of his mask actually creeped me out as a kid. The only downside is, like most of the Legion of Doom, he rarely (if ever) got a chance to shine as part of the group. Also, nice touch with all the "quick creepy edits." Was that Pennywise I saw in at least one of them? Also-also, while I do like "As the Crow Flies," I do find it odd that Crane was depicted in such a demeaning manner. In that particular tale, I didn't mind it so much, but later stories really bugged me...what few I've read. :P I bet you that, especially with the character's surge in popularity (thank you, Nolan, Arkham, and Injustice!) if they tried another story like that, Crane would just gas Ozzie at the first opportunity. ANYWAY, another interesting and comprehensive piece, comrade! :)

I think I've said this before, but I'm okay with Crane having fighting skills, though only basic skills, something he learns much later in his life, and should really only be capable of fighting evenly with others with limited fighting skills, as well as"loser-rogues" like Kite-Man.
@mr.rogues41456 жыл бұрын
I'm only okay with him fighting with weapons, like scythes or sickles.. or maybe a fork, like in Living Hell haha. Don't like him using his fists and kicking. Sure, he's not supposed to be feeble like an old lady, pining Kite-Man in a grip or something is fine, but trading blows in a brawl? Nah..
@dannybuckle37636 жыл бұрын
Oh no, I don't see him as a brawler. Not even close in fact. I just see him being able to potentially overwhelm some loser rogue or cheap henchman as a last resort. He certainly wouldn't like it (He is the Master of Fear, not Fighting, after all), but he'd see the logic in learning basic self-defence techniques (maybe from Bane?); no "Crane Fu" or anything like that.
@mr.rogues41456 жыл бұрын

What about injustice 2 scarecrow?
@GreaterGrievobeast555 жыл бұрын
Injustice 2 is definetly has my favorite version of scarecrow portrayed. Just the way he’s able to deconstruct everyone’s fears and insecurities with a few comments. The fear monster design is also really neat and he used JUST enough fear puns to not be cheesy. My next pick is the one from Gotham as I just feel sorry for the poor kid.

Also as far as I know he’s the first DC villain to appear in a DC/non-DC property crossover that has no heroes or other villains in it, in the form of Happy Halloween, Scooby Doo. Well at least DC acknowledge the guy has a small but VERY loyal cult following even if he’s disappointingly not in the movie that much.
@sarahsims61643 жыл бұрын
I'd definitely give anything to see the HHSD version come back, and make him the main and ONLY villain.
@SiRenfield3 жыл бұрын
@@sarahsims6164 Indeed, maybe have him be unexpected to balance out the fact that they heavily advertised him as the main threat only to fake out. I mean I know trailers for mysteries sometimes use manipulative editing to hide the mystery (see Gone Girl for one example) ,but it feels less like “hiding something” and more like “false advertising”. Side note: I actually otherwise liked the way Maxwell Atoms wrote him, I wouldn’t mind seeing what he’d do with an all ages Batman.

I don't know if I can say that Scarecrow is my favorite Batman villain, but it's certainly one of the most bad-ass looking. And as with many others, his Gotham version is awesome

I would have to say that the Scarecrow is among Batman's top-ten villains, rather than being a second-rate villain as this video seemed to have explained. And as I've mentioned before, the Batman films of the 90s would have been made better with Michael Keaton still as The Dark Knight, Tim Burton as an executive producer (not as the director), & Dennis O'Neil as a consultant. I would also agree that the Scarecrow would have been the main villain in a Batman movie, with Brad Dourif for the role of Jonathan Crane/the Scarecrow. I've even read that the director of The Dark Knight Trilogy, Christopher Nolan, did say in an interview that he wished he had given Cillian Murphy more screen-time as Jonathan Crane/the Scarecrow.
