I like the idea that Jonathan Crane is constantly redesigning his costume or trying new things. Not just because he's often working with whatever materials on hand (escaped mental patients rarely have large costume budgets), but because he's always looking for a fresh look to scare people with. Familiarity breeds contempt, and deadens the fear. He still has a brand to maintain, so he's always going to vaguely resemble a scarecrow. But he mixes things up, so his appearance always elicits a new terrified reaction. I also just love the mental image of Jonathan Crane hunched over a sketchbook, doodling new ideas for his OC. The OC that is also himself. Gives another human dimension to him.

What would’ve been even more shocking for Scarecrow’s design would’ve been the revelation that Crane used to look normal, but purposefully mangled and destroyed his face to look like a mask. Cracked, leathery skin, exposed teeth and gums, bloodshot eyes from the lack of eye lids, open wounds which he never let heal, and a quiet but scratched voice from torn vocal chords. Crane would’ve been burying any tie back to his old life of being “human” and fully embrace his identity of a monster which embodies fear itself. What happens to a man when too far is not enough?.

Scarecrow’s design in Arkham Knight is one of my favorites. That look executes the idea of not knowing what part is the mask and what part is Crane’s actual face really well just like the TNBA design. Plus, it also includes the noose which is awesome. And even though it was first seen in Asylum, the syringe glove is another detail that makes the Knight look so fantastic in my opinion.

I personally find a combination of the chemical accident and hanging to be my explanation for the ‘New’ design. With my own personal take on how the story went down: Batgirl finds him attempting to create a large, highly potent vat of his toxin, the battle leads to the raw material department of the warehouse where Krane is left on the ropes. Pieces of the banister creak and fall and him on as he plunges into the vat below. The experience setting off something in his mind, that he hadn’t thought of before. A new fear he has yet to explore, the fear of death. His crimes, though not enough to warrant an execution, especially with the Bat Family motto of not killing their enemies, leaves Krane with one test subject. Himself. Deep in his cell in Arkham the Scarecrow fashions a noose, his mind still not quite right as he steps into it. ‘What happens afterwards? Will it be painful? What will I see?’ He kicks the chair over and begins to choke. His vision and mind blur even further the lines between reality and fiction. The rope, however, being old and worn, snaps shortly after, Krane’s weight causing too much stress on the fibres. This leads to his new look, as he keeps the noose to remind him of his victory in the face of death. His new form the phantom to haunt Gotham’s nightmares.

I think the Arkham Knight Scarecrow design is my favorite. If you know the lore of the games, then you'd know that in Asylum Scarecrow got absolutely mauled by Killer Croc. He had to reconstruct his own face since it was so horribly maimed. The end result, in Arkham Knight, is absolutely terrifying and cool. He literally had gas mask filters implanted in his own cheeks. His teeth are jagged and uneven in his mouth. The only thing keeping his jaw from falling on the floor is poorly done stitching. Croc mauled him so bad that he doesn't even have a nose anymore. Another thing, Scarecrows voice in this game is so great. Its calm and menacing and it works so well

I like to think the voice being calm is somewhere in his attack with croc, he was bitten somewhere near his vocal chords which damaged them and thus he has to talk silently in order to not strain them. But he prefers it thinking it as being more scary.
@jasonx11748 ай бұрын
@TheGothamsJoker I did not think much of him having a different voice outside of recasting until I read this. Made me realize how he never raises his voice or if he does it's never all that high. Even when he's being smashed to a control panel at the beginning of the game at Ace Chemicals or even when he sees nightmare Batman under the effects of his own fear toxin he doesn't even scream all that loud in the face of what his biggest fear is in that moment.
@animekittykitty Жыл бұрын
One idea I like for a Scarecrow design is that the way he looks varies from person to person, making it hard to pin down who he is or how to identify him. Seeing as how he works with fear gas, I personally like the idea of it almost clinging to him like some sort of perfume that messes with how people perceive him. This could also follow him outside of his Scarecrow persona, making others uneasy around him and therefore making it harder to connect to others thus him accidently driving himself further into isolation and anti-social behavior. I know it runs the risk of being... *pheromone-y*, but it'd be fun for a more detective-esque story line while giving way to make all sorts of fun designs to The Scarecrow since everyone's imagination of this new, terrifying entity calling himself The Scarecrow can just snowball as more urban legends spread about him.
@liamball46434 ай бұрын
You could also add onto this idea by having miniature tanks of fear toxin built into his costumes that slowly, passively pump small doses of the stuff into the air wherever Scarecrow goes, so even just being in his *vicinity* can create an insane sense of foreboding and paranoia in people who are unlucky enough to come within a block of the guy.

I think the idea scarecrow doesn't have one costume makes the most sense his entire identity is based on the study and mastery of fear and emotion so it makes sense he'd always push for a new outfit both as a way of improving his control over fear and also simply to further examine the more basic aspects of fear not just the chemicals he can make in a lab but how different stimulus can produce and enhance fear
@NixityNullt Жыл бұрын
I like to think that Scarecrow's costume design change in bm:tas is actually part of the story. Of course he would change his costume to be more inimidating after his first failure, and then change it again to become even more intimidating later. Given his drive to be taken seriously and learn from his mistakes, as well as being the only character whose appearance is purely his costume and not tied to his actual appearance, him being the only character to go through a design change in the first series and have such a drastic change in the second series makes sense for his character.
@GreaterGrievobeast55 Жыл бұрын
Honestly I think scarecrow changing up his costume should be a recurring aspect to his character in any general continuity. It would make sense that he'd constantly be tweaking his look to play into peoples different fears and for various levels of practicality. He's also one of batmans poorer rouges, so I don't think he can afford to make exact replacements for his costumes when their severely damaged/made into evidence after his arrests.,

I honestly really like that Scarecrow’s design keeps changing. Since he’s all about fear, what’s so scary about you if you always look the same. Eventually people will get used to it. So the constant change in getup will make them scary to people again. (Hopefully, if it actually looks good)
@ThyDungeonman2 Жыл бұрын
Also- I always imagined the change in scarecrows design was simply the result of him having to completely remake his costume from the ground up every time he winds up in Arkham because unlike other villains who narcissistically retrieve their things (or have a stock somewhere of similar clothes), Jonathan Crane simply doesn’t CARE enough about his attire to go back for it, viewing it as not shocking enough to use the same appearance over and over. I mean, it’s just not scary if you know what to expect, right?

I wasn't sure what villains I would want to see in the future installments of Matt Reeves's Batman series, but these two videos have got me hooked on Scarecrow being the main antagonist in at least one of them. The Batman showed that the team behind it has an intimate understanding of how to build the feeling of Gotham City and how to interweave different designs and characters into a cohesive and wholly unique aesthetic. Scarecrow is the perfect character to take that one step further, highlighting the more sinister elements of Gotham's design and challenging Batman's perceived understanding of his city. I commented in the previous video about what kind of plot I think would work best for Bruce and Crane, but I absolutely trust the production team to make something great if they choose to use Scarecrow at all.
@REDACTED1151 Жыл бұрын
The first time I got hooked on the scarecrow was when I was watching the Batman trilogy. And from the moment he stepped on screen I was obsessed. Because he’s not supernatural he’s just a regular guy who personally I think is scarier and poses more of a threat to Batman than any of the villains in the trilogy. Not to mention the fact that even Batman uses his fear toxin to get what he wants. And that just shows the fact that scarecrow doesn’t need to have superpowers to have the effects he does on anything he’s in.

Him snapping and believing he's a ghost might be my favorite of the three personally. The Animated series scarecrow otherwise has comparatively less mental trauma than his comic counterpart which I think suits the character to have at some extent. Crane beliving he's undead would also play into why he's in Arkham and not blackgate on death row, as you can't legally execute someone if they don't comprehend the implications of being executed.

The tmnt crossover explanation for Scarecrows new design is my favorite. Batmans villains always adapted and upgraded their gear over time. I like it when villains learn from their mistakes or realize they need to up their game. It gives them more depth.

I completely agree with you that His final design of the series was also his BEST DESIGN,altough i have 2 main minor issues (mostly personal) with it. 1. His bare hands, they are very thin compared to th rest of his body (which actually help him makinh him more monstrous) but the fact that they are so pale betrays his monstrous appearance and makes clear he is a human and they also break the dark palette they chose for the rest of the body. 2. His "weapon": i think the scythe fits his scarecrow aesthetic a bit better than the stick and it also helps making him scarier, because yes a stick can hurt you a lot but a scythe can actually cut you and kill even instantly (also visually you can play with the shining of the blade, which can help making him look both cooler and scarieri at the same time)

I would love to see your opinion on the Clayface character, as he also has strong horror elements involved in his design and backstory.
@owenkinder1076 Жыл бұрын
Clayface is probably one of my favorites due to his interpretation in TAS being so in depth and incredibly charming while being a tragic yet threatening character, yet I wouldn't necessarily consider him much of a horror themed character. The elements of his bacstory are quite unsettling but I'd say a lot of the routes gallery in the series could be described this way, so I not too sure about that if I ask you.

The line in that one cartoon episode where Scarecrow mutters, almost to himself, something like, "That's right, tough guy. Come and get me." ...I love Jeffrey Combs in everything but boy I've never forgotten that moment.

No because this gives me a whole new appreciation for scarecrow. I genuinely loved the first video you did about him and this one was the icing on the cake! I’d love to see your ideas on the character come to reality! Love all your content and I hope that we can get more tidbits like this in the future! 🤍 hope you have a good day/night!

I'm not even a big fan of superhero stuff but Scarecrow is definitely my favorite batman villain, I'm glad YT decided to show me these videos so I can learn more about him
@nono9543 Жыл бұрын
Scarecrow has so much potential to be the best villain of all DC. I really think the reason he's as underpowered as he is is because it would be harder to write him getting beat without putting more effort into it.

Not only is this design also my favorite but the cold monotone voice acting of Jeffery Combs become my definitive version of the characters voice as well. its chilling

Ive always loved scarecrows injustice 2 design, i love the more "supernatural" look he have while using the fear gas His mask, the glow in his eyes, the white and whitered skin with crow feathers coming out of it like he is some kind of mutant

I honestly love the way you make your little characters interact at the end of episodes, it reminds me a lot of when me and my friends are doinking around with ideas and end up coming up with goofy stuff. I love your videos, keep up the amazing work Pastra! 🧡🖤

Characters like the Scarecrow fascinate me, because it almost doesn't matter if you know who's behind the mask. It's so unique, hand-crafted, and true to himself that he may as well be the monster he presents as.

I find Scarecrow to be most spooky with a broken body, stitched together, in a torn, grotesque mess. A hideous corpse, fondling the intricacies of fear.

Hearing Pastra talk about Scarecrow has been a blast. I’ve always enjoyed scarecrow, but this has just made me appreciate him more than ever! Scarecrow Pastra design is so cool, and I very much saw the influence on Lankmann. It’s just been so much fun to hear the passion throughout this. Can’t wait for the next time you get to talk about your favorite guy!

I can't remember where I saw it, but my favorite scarecrow design was one where he was wearing a dark, stained cloak overtop of a tattered straight jacket, belted pants meant to secure a patients legs but the belts were torn, and big black boots weilding a scythe and his mask was a burlap sac that had a two tears down the center from the top of his head to the base of his chin for his eyes and mouth.

My favorite designs were actually the both Arkham Asylum and Knight scarecrow. But out of all the New Batman Adventures' redesigns and style changes, Scarecrow's was absolutely the best! He has a morbid origin which would inspire my favorite designs, and he really stands out compared to virtually everyone else

Makes me smile to hear someone say, "I don't normally focus on superheroes, but I love Batman." Also love this video giving love to BtAS's second Scarecrow design, as I always felt it was a very good design but was overshadowed by New Adventures' and Arkham Asylum's designs (even if they deserve the hype). I also like the first two ideas for how the New Adventures suit came to be, as I've heard that in order to scare people, you need to be capable of fear yourself (which is why people chosen to director of Resident Evil and Silent Hill games are picked despite having aversions to horror themselves); being exposed to your own Fear Toxin or thinking yourself a lingering ghost would probably do wonders to upping your costume design.

The last iteration of Scarecrow didn't feel like Johnathan Crane scarecrow. It felt like someone or something more sinister. Like they're using the Scarecrow name in spirit and body that Crane could never have achieved. It could explain the massive leap from the rag doll and jack-o'-lantern looking scarecrow to what he is now. That's what it feels like to me.
@dannydevito4184 Жыл бұрын
I like the idea of him not being a guy wearing a mask anymore but an undead monster of fear. He's no longer a human anymore but an undead zombie-like creature supernaturally kept alive by the fear toxin, his rotting flesh fused with his costume. He's not Johnathan Crane anymore but just the scarecrow. Or maybe there's a little bit of John left in there, trapped underneath the mask. Think of it like springtrap, before he was just a guy wearing a suit but now he's become springtrap, this animalistic creature of rotten flesh fused with metal kept alive with souls.

Honestly The scarecrow having different looks makes a lot of sense horror wise Things tend to get less scary the more you see it. So having multiple costumes help keep some of that fear in the next in counter
@nvanrhyn Жыл бұрын
my personal canon is that crane was overdosed on his own fear toxin, and he hanged himself, but somehow the rope broke, giving him the confidence to embrace the fear.
@mrksimka1159 Жыл бұрын
Honestly the design in New adventures also works because of the voices. Usually Crane sounds histerical and high pitched but this one is very low and never raises his voice almost like a calm cold emotionless ghoul.

My favorite Scarecrow design is probably from the Arkham Knight video game. It's incredibly ominous, and fits quite well in a realistic and more grim setting. In the game, the skin on his face has been entirely replaced by dirty brown fabric after his face was eaten by Killer Croc in the first game, and it stretches and contorts as it speaks.

My favorite Scarecrow design has got to be his look from Arkham Asylum. There are so many different design elements that work together perfectly to sell the ghostly mad chemist vibe they were going for: -The syringe claw sells the doctor aesthetic, while also invoking trypanophobia and imagery of medical malpractice -The stitched together clothes make it almost look like he was torn apart and crudely sewn back together -The mask/face looks like a pile of clay molded into the vague shape of a head -The gas-mask filters coming out of his cheeks convey the poison gas aspect of his character (plus gas masks just instantly make any design cooler lol) -The angler fish-esque teeth cover the pseudo-mouth and give the impression of an unseen predator -The unclothed, gaunt torso makes him look like a corpse that got up and threw on whatever clothes it could find

I have a theory that the new scarecrow is not Johnathan Krane or DR. Krane actually died but somehow came back to life.

The entire time I was watching the first part, I was waiting for you to mention this design & Templeton's ghoulish explanations for it in some manner. It seemed so up your alley that once I saw you were doing a Scarecrow video I was immediately thinking *"they're definitely gonna mention the "New Adventures Crane thinks he's a ghost" thing, I mean that design is something else entirely & if the Pastra brand is anything to go by he'll definitely agree"* so I was shocked when it wasn't mentioned in the original, & as such overjoyed to see this video confirm my original suspicions & then some. I'm with you, I love when writers have an explanation or backstory for a choice in mind even if it isn't directly provided in the show itself, it makes every element of the design feel so deliberate & part of the character.
