It's more wild that they don't take more. Same for Beyond Earth not taking enough from Alpha Centauri. Both Master of Orion 2 and Alpha Centauri are STILL unmatched in terms of just atmosphere and feeling. I honestly don't understand how today's graphics and budgets can't result in better games. Instead you get...Master of Orion Conquest of disney graphics. Just wtf.

My Sundays (for 3 years) were waking up, making a tuna-noodle dish, and starting a new game of MOO2. I spent the entire day playing, until bedtime. Straight up, the most powerful trait is Telepathic, specifically because you can rush a point-defense cruiser (back-facing point-defense, run away from the battlestation until it's out of missiles) to take planets -- and Lithovore planets are the best to enslave. Extra techs are nice, but the 8-point cost of Creative isn't worth it. Instead, go Large Home World, Aquatic (for the food + size bonus) and Rich (for the extra production). I'm totally down with playing for fun, but when you're talking power picks, those are the ones.
@Trainer_Orange2 жыл бұрын
With creative I do have a huge amount of bargaining chips to trade with the ai, so unless I'm playing on impossible that also shouldn't be forgotten. Besides that is indeed a teeny but overrated. Very powerful, but not as much as I thought when I first started playing.
@LuaanTi2 жыл бұрын
Creative is so expensive exactly because of how incredibly powerful it is - though it does mean you miss out on the other ways to get tech, like trading, raiding and spying :) Until you get to the very end game, it handily beats most other bonuses, even the empire-wides. It's great if you're going for an all-around empire, rather than focusing on any specific path, and when you don't want to rely on other empires for research. It fits the Psilons very well. It's also a great choice for beginners. And it gives you plenty of flexibility. Is it the best choice for min-maxers? Probably not. It does go pretty well with Repulsive to almost mitigate the cost (and really, if you want to go repulsive, creative is a great choice - you'll need that or good spies). Aquatic is quite powerful and cheaper (but peters out as your terraforming capabilities improve, all the way to zero benefit); telepathic is extremely powerful for rushing (especially in smaller "galaxies"). In the end, most of the traits are there to cater to different playstyles. Creative removes much dependency on other empires (whether through war, spies or trade) and simplifies research. Telepathic essentially removes ground combat. Lithovore means not having to care about food. Tolerant removes pollution and to an extent, planet types. Omniscient essentially removes exploration and intelligence. Subterranean gives you a more relaxed, turtling approach (and unlike aquatic, the bonus stays into the endgame).
@sterfdwaas2 жыл бұрын

My favorite race back in the day was: -1 Farming (-3), -.5 Money (-4), -10 Spying (-3), Unification (6), Cybernetic (4), Tolerant (10). Tolerant meant that you got more max pop per planet for all planet types (similar to subterranean). The ship bonuses from cybernetic were nice, but its primary purpose was the 1/2 food need. A single hydroponic farm could feed 4 pops on each planet (make that the first tech you research). Combine that with a single bread basket planet to make excess food and you've got your whole empire fed. Meanwhile, you can colonize literally every planet around, no matter the type. Your production is through the roof without the need to worry about pollution. Money is tight in the early game but you have enough production that you won't be rush-buying anything anyway.

If you remove the computer from the scout design as well, it gets even cheaper. As a true master of orion myself (I've beaten it on impossible while being uncreative), here's some things to try: 1. Beat the Antarans using nothing but gyro destablisers as your weapons. 2. form an alliance on impossible with only the Elerians, and try to get them to survive the game with you (yes its possible!) 3. Play as the Darloks (i changed their name to the Romulan Republic and picked green, and made them as close as i could to the trek species - it was super fun and totally different to the usual playstyle of manufacture or research superiority). Also the list of most dangerous/annoying species to play against late game(in order): 1. Psilon - they'll hit late game tech before anyone else, on impossible it means a really dangerous enemy. 2. Trilarians - if they survive til late game, they're almost as bad as the psilons thanks to all the research treaties and deals the wrangle with other species - they are also the ones most likely to get voted the galactic leader. 3. Darloks - I've lost count of the amount of times I've read the message "Darlok spy steals Death Ray" shortly after I've taken Orion. What's worse, is they instantly trade it to a bunch of other races. Late game darloks are a real terror with endless amounts of sabotage and tech thefts. Thankfully they usually get wiped out by the mrrshans or bulrathi early.
@HarleyHerbert2 жыл бұрын
I like picking subterranean as a trait. What's even better about it is that the bigger the planet the bigger the bonus. Allows you to build a bigger population on less hospitable worlds that would normally have tiny pop caps and on the more hospitable ones you can get a huge population which helps turn even non rich worlds into production powerhouses
@vario500android52 жыл бұрын
I have very fond memories of MoO2 from my childhood. I forgot a lot but i know for instance it's best to keep only one pop doing housing and use the rest to do research on your main planet. Also think hydroponic farm as equivalent to one extra pop in research. If the hydro farm would give you a flat 5 or 6 science every time you build one, you would not hesitate.

The GoG version is the DOS version and uses DOSBox, so it works fine. The Windows version doesn't have any advantages I know of, doesn't have the latest patches (and has no mods) and generally having a DOS game running in DOSBox tends to be more convenient. You can get the Windows version running if you really want to, but it's more effort for no real gain - and if you have the CD, you have both the DOS and Windows versions already.

Better start strategy: Put maximal population in research, get Automated Factories, put maximal population in production, build the factories, and only then spread. If you have researched Research Labs, put all in production until those are built. [Essentially, the benefits of these buildings are way better than the otherwise accumulated things. You might also do the same with Hydroponic Farms to free some workers.] Also, a radiated poor planet is not that important early on - not a big population increase, and the food you send there could also have been spent on the workers on your better home planet. That said, queueing up the Colony Base might still be relevant, as in MoO2, all production is buffered and if you exchange the Base for something like a Colony Ship, all the buffered production can be applied to it. You'd colonize that planet on the side, prioritizing Colony Ships for good planets. Aside from that, your computer focused start is a good one. Thing with scouting is that it does not give you direct benefits at the start, only when you afterwards colonize, and colony ships are relatively expensive at the start. You want Research Labs and Automated Factories before you build them. And you can scout while you build them. [ I think this is why Stellaris introduced both anomalies and allows claiming systems without building colonies. Makes early scouts way more useful. ]
@stevo-dx5rr Жыл бұрын
I seem to remember that pop is power in this game, and you want to colonize like crazy, buy factories, set the colonies to housing, and when new pops grow, move them to productive worlds. You always want several such “breeder” planets so that you grow incredibly fast. You could alternatively specialize in research and go for a tech rush type of strategy, but I seem to remember production edging it out. I don’t remember tech builds that well, but I seem to remember pop growth was powerful, as was tolerant, and unification/democracy both very powerful. Creative seems good at first glance, but it’s actually just unnecessary and not worth the trade offs. I seem to remember being repulsive all the time, as the aliens are hard to trade with anyway, and there is little downside. I’m going to have to fire this up again sometime soon!
@patsk88722 жыл бұрын
I always do: Research Electronic Computer -> Research Labs, build & buy research labs; Research Reinforced Hull & Automated Factories, build & buy automated factories. Make Colony bases & research & build freighters; research base armor/propulsion, build cheap scouts and research colony ships. Only then might I change up the choice, taking either laser cannon group, biospheres (nearly always better than farms) or deuterium fuel cells especially if I hate my start area. Taking fuel cells into pollution processor gets you range, missile miniaturization and better production. So it ends up being better than either robo miners or supercomputer.

Same exact two games for me. I played Master of Orion 1 for a year straight (as the only game I was into), during college in the 90's. Before watching this playthrough, I'm recalling that for Orion 2, making ships fairly early that focused just on missles, was the best strategy I found for impossible. Combining that with telepathic was extremely good. Oh cool... you know about the missle thing. I played this before the internet was really a thing, so I have no idea how other people play this game. (Weird, KZbin tells me that I'm misspelling something with "missle.") I believe what you do is work on a colony base which stores up production and you can switch instantly to something else like a automated factory (which I think is actually the right building to go for first, rather than the lab, but that might be on "avg" tech lvl start), lab or biospheres when you hit that research. I believe that selling your star base and your barracks is the right call in a democracy, but I am going on 20+ years back of memory. Small note: Heros are assigned to star systems, not planets.

-50% Population Growth is usually the negative trait I pick the most. Mainly because you can easily offset slow population growth by researching and then building Cloning Centers on all of your planets, and possibly utilizing production bonuses to have planets building Housing to increase population growth early on and when you don't have too much to build. Once your planets are populated, then the -50% Population Growth isn't really a downside anymore, and you can transfer population to newly colonized planets to help them build up faster while the Cloning Centers continue pumping out population on your already well settled planets. Especially if you have Subterranean as a positive trait, once you have your population built up you can have an excellent infrastructure and war machine going by the time that other races decide to inevitably declare war on you and try and take you out.

I have bought every single MoO clone I came across on steam. While many of them are good (including the WarGaming one you mention), none ever did what I actually wanted them to do: Keep all the basic systems the same and just add more content. It baffles me that no follow up game ever kept the turn based combat with shield and firing arcs for example. Or the miniaturization and mods, which made "outdated" tech some of the most effective to use. Being able to take one ship in against 99 enemies and winning might have been overpowered, but damn was it fun. I was really hyped when you announced you were going to do a community MoO2 clone in Unity a while back, that might have been the first OS project I would have actually contributed to.

Really excited for this one. The game has never been off my computer(s) since I got it back in the day. I go back to it every year or so. The newer version -- not for me. I like this one. Couple of MOO2 fine points: * Admin Leaders affect entire systems. Doubt your tech admin will be useful until your first interstellar colony. My observation has been that Leaders do not contribute their bonuses unless assigned, and earn no personal experience unless assigned. * Resource/food/research get a malus if the planet has no Marine Barracks. It's bigger for some governments, but it seems to be there for everyone. Note the following: * The Outpost Ship, in addition to claiming a system, provides a Marine Barracks automatically if the planet is later colonized, so sending an outpost first has some extra value. (Note: It is possible for multiple races to have claims in a system by having colonies or outposts on different planets.) * Re your radiation world: In most games, I would have left the radiated planet alone (only toxic planets are worse), but with your set-up, you've negated a lot of the disadvantages. A Marine Barracks would tweak your production up if your're inteterested. I usually save radiated worlds for robot development. Robot workers ignore radiation, pollution, and food (they eat a production point each), so if you develop them, you can turn a radiated planet into an effective robotic production center. First establish a normal colony (base), then build or ship in a robot worker, then ship out the organic colonist(s). Obviously, not going to happen in your home system, but you might try it later. * Production overflows are retained only if another project is in queue, and those retained points are specific to the new project--realize they are sunk costs if you reorder or cancel projects a lot. I think the game keeps research overruns, provided you select another research project before ending the turn. * When you get to ship design, the order of weapons is significant--the default is to fire in order. This let's you mix and match weapon combos to tweak your overall damage effects at the design stage, especially if you like to use tactical auto-resolve. (Even in manual, it's faster just clicking down the weapons in order.) Spy maintenance is pricey, but with a Democracy, you might want to have a couple in place before first contact. Usually when I get a few production planets going, I like a queue alternating spy-outpost with at least one of them. I love the way this game gives each weapon system its own "voice". Too many space games either forgot how immersive this is, or never learned. Also, the graphics that have you manipulating little pictures of your race, as a continuous reminder of who you are, is another genius immersion factor. Maybe a modder will put together a portrait gallery for custom races sometime.

Only Feudalism and Dictatorship take the morale penalty for lacking barracks; Democracy doesn't care and Unification ignores morale. Otherwise, good tips.
