I'm a music teacher and I've taught this song three times last week. I respect Metallica but they are not what I'm interested in. I clicked on this post because I knew watching you teach this would be informative and entertaining. You did not disappoint. Great stuff! Keep it up.

I’m thankful for Cherry Lane for helping me start. Not long after I started to realize that Cliff and Geddy were doing way more or different.

I’ve always thought of it as a case of permutation. They’re moving the 1 by a 32nd note with a push, then a bar of 2/4, then back to 4/4.

Everyone always talks about Justice, but I think Cliff could've been turned up a bit in the mix on Master. He's pretty audible on Kill and Lightning to me.

But the thing is they turned down Jason Newstead on And Justice For All on purpose to haze and bully him.

The weirdest part timing wise for me was that riff before the fake end, the one that sounds kind of like a metal version of the topline melody from the eastenders theme tune 😂

The faster you played, the faster you talked. YES!

Metallica were all in their early 20's at the time (Cliff was the oldest, he barely turned 24 before the album was out) so my honest and probably quite close to true guess is that it's just a sloppily played bar of 3/4s (6/8s) and they all slopped it equally and consistently to the point of making it stick forever. This probably wouldn't work as well in other bands that use the drummer and not the lead guitarist as a metronome. But yeah, it's definitely possible to analyse it and perfect it with the power of hindsight, and in many cases this method will be easier to practice than hoping your band can 'feel' the rhythm correctly.

Helluva dissection! I thought I read somewhere that Metallica actually recorded 'Master' half-speed (?) and dropped-tuned, transposed to tape at standard speed in order to tighten things up.
@talkingbasslessons2 жыл бұрын
Never heard that. But if that’s true then that bar would be even more obviously 11/16.
@DanielGonzalez-tw8nu2 жыл бұрын
It’s true, at least according to the producer of the album, Flemming Rasmussen.

The 7/16 reminds me of a Meshuggah song. Can't think of the name atm. Also, you can think "down, down, down, down-up, up, up, up. Either pick strokes or head-nodding.

Apologies if you touched upon it, but would it not have worked to have treated that second open E like a grace note or acciaccatura? edit: correction, previous transcriptions I have seen have treated the G notes as grace notes.
@talkingbasslessons2 жыл бұрын
No because the timing of the bar is the problem. It’s the overall distance from one bar line to the next that is shifted because of the extra note/gap. If it was an acciaccatura the bar length would be 5/8. But the bar is definitely not 5.

You don't think it was just cliff trying to play with Lars horrible timing? 😕
@talkingbasslessons2 жыл бұрын
The timing is very consistent. It is exactly the same every time with exactly the same 16th note skip. It’s not a timing deficiency. It’s purposely done.
