only cliff could write something that went so well with the guitars around 3:51 what a bassist and awesome cover man, awesome tone too
@bringembach28364 ай бұрын
Interesting thing is that there is a subtle fallacy in this reasoning I write music as well and it took me a while to realise this Now don't get me wrong, this bass part is absolutely awesome However, the idea that it "goes so well with the guitars" is an emergent property of your own perception, and not Cliff's. Because you have always heard those guitars with that bassline laid out in the background. Even if you couldn't hear it clearly, your perception of the guitar has always been comfortably resting on that bass groove, and therefore that bassline is implied in the way you hear the guitars, so of course when you hear it clearly you think it is the perfect bassline. There could have been 100000 other basslines that compliment the guitars well, but this one is the one that sounds familiar and true, not because of itself, but because it is the one that was printed on the record. What you call "the guitars" doesn't exist in a vacuum. You do not know what the guitars could have sounded like without the bass, and you never will. Because the bass deeply affects how you perceive everything above it (and there are a million tracks that demonstrate that, with the guitar playing the same thing twice while the bass changes for example). "But what do you mean, rambling stranger?? Of course I know what it sounds like, I can go listen to the guitar riff without the bass, you dumb fuck" No, you can't. The only way you could is if you had never heard the song with the bass. If you find someone who has never listened to that song, you can show them the guitar part in isolation and they will hear exactly that, the guitar part. But you, my dear fellow, will always have the bassline in your head, whether you know it or not. When you hear the guitars in isolation, something will be missing. Something that completes the harmony in your memories of this song, something you are so used to that it feels off without it. So when you hear the bassline, you think "THAT! THAT EXACTLY WAS MISSING!". But the truth is, our brain is pretty much unable to think of anything else because the bass is an integral part of how we understand this melody, how we feel it, how we think it "should" be. Now, don't get me wrong (again), a bassline can be better or worse. But that is an extremely complicated thing to discuss and I'm kinda too lazy to go into a whole essay here xD

Spector basses have been in the shadows & killing it for years. Most underrated basses imo. Would never part with mine.
